Chapter 1 Prologue

Shuzhou State, the twenty-third year of Yuanqi, Mid-Autumn Night.

Under the moonlight, the huge mansion of the Fourth Prince seemed unusually deserted.

In the southeast corner, a faint flash of fire appeared. Looking closely, it was the bedroom of the Fourth Prince's wife, Gu Chang'an.

Inside the room, the woman on the sandalwood couch opened her eyes weakly, seeing a scorching red light and choking smoke when she breathed.

"Ahem! There's a fire... Fire... Help quickly..."

A burning smell hit his face, and the fire burned to the bed curtains. Gu Changan struggled to get down from the bed.

It hurts! It hurts so much from the fall, I don’t have any strength left in my body.

"Squeak!" The door opened.

Gu Changan, who was in a state of seeking help, saw the person coming and hope instantly appeared on her face. She stretched out her hand to the person and said, "Cousin... hurry... hurry up and put out the fire... save me."

"Help? Haha!" The person standing outside the fire raised his red lips, his expression lazily and full of pride. "Sister, stop shouting. Save your energy for reincarnation."

Gu Changan looked at the people outside the fire in surprise, "Cousin, you..."

The woman covered her lips and smiled, her peach blossom eyes full of sarcasm.

“…It’s you?”

Gu Changan looked at the smile on his cousin's face, and at this moment he seemed to understand everything.

The cousin whom he trusted and relied on the most was going to... die.

"Although you and I are not from the same father and mother, we are from the same family after all. How could my cousin bear to let you go?" Gu Shijia said with a hypocritical smile, "It was my husband. He was willing to marry an ugly woman like you because of the power behind you.

In the end, the power behind you couldn't be used by my husband. Since that's the case, my sister's existence naturally has no value. So... during the Mid-Autumn Festival, with so many lights on, a sudden fire broke out, and the Fourth Prince's wife tragically perished in the flames."

Gu Changan looked at his sister in disbelief: "No, this is not true. My husband would not treat me like this."

A hint of coldness flashed across Gu Shijia's proud eyes, "I'll tell you a secret. Back then, when you were wearing your wedding dress and stepped into the Fourth Prince's mansion, your disabled father was killed by the Fourth Prince with a cup of poisoned wine.

On the night of our wedding, my husband made love with me in my room, on my bed. And the man next to you is just some stinky guy you picked up from the street."

As he spoke, Gu Shijia threw a handful of spices in front of Gu Changan, "Does this smell familiar? I'm sure my cousin will never forget this 'phantom fragrance' even if she goes to hell."

This kind of incense can make you mistake people for each other. Every time your husband comes to your room, he will order someone to light a stick in advance, and you will naturally mistake other men for your husband! I have watched it with my husband more than once..."

"No... don't say anymore..." At this moment, Gu Changan believed it. She lay on the ground, trembling all over, clenching her fists tightly. "Cousin, back then you didn't want to marry the prince. Grandfather and I mediated in many ways to allow you to marry my husband... You, why are you doing this now?"

"Mediation? Haha, speaking of this, I really have to thank you very much. The old queen mother loved you so much back then that she would agree to anything you, Gu Changan, proposed. If it weren't for that old queen mother putting pressure on the emperor, my husband and I really wouldn't be able to stay together."

Gu Shijia was in a very good mood, his eyes full of contempt.

Gu Changan raised his eyes with great effort, and the moment his eyes met Gu Shijia's, his eyes, which had been cautious and extremely timid, suddenly became extremely sharp.

Even through the fire, it couldn't conceal Gu Changan's deep hatred. That look seemed to devour people in an instant.

This glance made Gu Shijia extremely upset. She didn't want to waste time with Gu Changan any longer. He wanted her to die immediately. "After all, we are sisters. Before you leave, I will offer two jars of wine to the Fourth Prince's wife."

"Yes." The old woman at the side poured two large jars of wine onto the place where the fire was most intense and onto Gu Changan's body.

Suddenly the fire shot up into the sky.

"Ah!" Gu Changan's scream was so shocking that it made people lose their minds.

In my ears was the sound of the rapid burning of the thunderbolt.

The fire devoured everything recklessly, including wooden chairs, sandalwood cabinets...

The things on the ground were quickly burned beyond recognition and became pitch black.

Wooden beams and windows began to collapse, and huge wooden pillars fell directly on Chang'an.

"Puff..." Blood spit out, Gu Chang'an filled with resentment and unwillingness, "Bei Ming Ye, Gu Shijia. I, Gu Chang'an, swear that even if I transform into a fierce ghost, I will make sure that what you ask for will never come true!"

In an instant, everything turned to ashes.

The people in the room were burned to ashes.
