Chapter 20 "Is it too late or not?"
Saturday.
When Jiang Wan arrived at the entrance of the city library, Zhou Chong was already there.
On a winter morning, even the sunlight has a crisp, clear quality.
Zhou Chong stood on the steps at the library entrance, wearing a black down jacket with the zipper zipped up all the way, a backpack slung over his shoulder, and loose-fitting dark gray casual pants that accentuated his long, straight legs.
Sunlight streamed over the library building behind him, falling on his sharply defined face, seemingly favoring him.
It was a season that could not be more solemn, and a season that could not be more desolate.
A soft golden light enveloped him; the sunlight was no longer cold, and Zhou Chong was no longer cold either.
Jiang Wan walked up with a smile, "When did you arrive? Why didn't you go in first and save a spot?"
She stood at the bottom of the steps, looking up at Zhou Chong. The wisps of hair around her forehead and ears shimmered with a soft golden light in the sunlight, making one want to pat her head.
But Zhou Chong held back, his hand, which was in his coat pocket, gently rubbing his fingertips.
"Just arrived, waiting for you."
The two short words answered Jiang Wan's two questions respectively.
Jiang Wan was already used to his attitude and didn't find him cold at all. Instead, she laughed at the second half of his sentence.
"Waiting for me?" Jiang Wan smiled and tilted her head to look at him. "Why are you waiting for me? Aren't you cold standing outside?"
Zhou Chong lowered his eyes indifferently, "I'm afraid you won't be able to find me."
"Oh, right." Jiang Wan suddenly realized, "We don't even have each other's contact information yet."
After saying that, she removed one shoulder strap from her backpack and took out a cell phone from the zippered pocket inside.
School rules prohibit bringing cell phones to school, and she had been either at school or at home for the past few days, so she hadn't had a chance to use her phone at all.
It was just last night when she told her mother that she was going out to study with her classmates today. Shan Tong reminded her to bring her phone, and that's when she discovered that there was an old-fashioned iPhone 5 in her desk drawer.
The interface was so old-fashioned that she wasn't used to it for a while, and it took her quite some time to finally log into her QQ account.
Ten years ago, before WeChat became popular, everyone used QQ to chat and was keen on decorating their QQ Spaces in a cool way.
Of course, at Jiang Wan's current age, looking back at her social media posts from her adolescence is a complete social disaster.
So the first thing she did when she logged into QQ was to lock her QQ space, even though her QQ Yellow Diamond membership still had six months left before it expired.
"Did you bring your phone?" Jiang Wan tapped a few times on her phone screen and held it up to Zhou Chong. "Let's add each other on QQ and exchange phone numbers?"
Yes, that's right. Last night, after Jiang Wan logged onto QQ, she discovered that she didn't have Zhou Chong as a QQ friend.
Jiang Wan was speechless. They were high school classmates, yet they hadn't even added each other on QQ.
Zhou Chong grunted in agreement, took a black cell phone out of his pocket, and handed it to Jiang Wan, saying, "Use my phone to add them yourself."
Jiang Wan took a closer look and saw that Zhou Chong's phone was also an iPhone 5, the same model as hers, but hers was white.
One is black and the other is white; they look like a couple's phone no matter how you look at them.
"Okay." She took Zhou Chong's phone and shoved her own into his hand as well. "You can use my phone to add them yourself."
Jiang Wan lowered her head, about to enter her phone number, when Zhou Chong suddenly gave her a gentle push on the shoulder, pulling her forward a step. She turned back to look at him, puzzled.
"It's cold standing outside for too long, come inside first." Zhou Chong only gave her a push before withdrawing his hand and putting it back into his pocket.
Jiang Wan thought that Zhou Chong had been standing outside waiting for her and must be quite cold, so she went into the library with him first.
Although it was only a little past eight in the morning, there were quite a few people in the library. The two of them walked all the way to the fourth floor before finding an empty table in a corner of the study room.
After sitting down, Jiang Wan put down her backpack, took out Zhou Chong's phone from her pocket, and continued to enter her own phone number.
After saving the contacts, she switched back to the main interface and clicked the QQ icon.
Zhou Chong's QQ chat list is very clean, completely blank, with nothing in it. His contact list is also very clean, without any groups, and he only has a dozen or so friends.
Unlike her, whose contact list was filled with fancy group names, separating family, friends, and classmates into different groups, she even created a separate group for Sun Qianyu, named—
"Sisters are more important than anything else."
This name was originally requested by Sun Qianyu. Correspondingly, on Sun Qianyu's QQ, Jiang Wan also stayed in a separate group called "Sisters Are Paramount".
Just as Jiang Wan was about to click on the "Add Friend" button in the upper right corner, a new friend request popped up.
[Wanwanbuwan requests to add you as a friend.]
Oh, it's my QQ nickname.
Her phone was then put back in her hand.
Zhou Chong has already completed the process; all she needs to do is accept the friend request.
Jiang Wan held Zhou Chong's phone, thought for a moment, created a group in the contact list, and then dragged herself into it.
When Jiang Wan returned the black iPhone, she thought that next time she would buy a pair of matching phone cases or phone charms.
But how to get Zhou Chong to agree to change into it is the problem.
Zhou Chong took his phone, didn't even look at it, and put it directly into his pocket.
Jiang Wan took one look and quickly poked his arm and pointed to his pocket.
Zhou Chong looked up at her and asked with his eyes what was wrong.
She leaned her upper body over the table, moved closer to Zhou Chong across from her, and whispered, "Take a look at your phone."
Zhou Chong took out his phone, not understanding why.
After unlocking, the QQ interface is still open.
The previously straightforward contact list now includes a new group:
"My deskmate".
There is only one person in this group:
"It's never too late."
