Chapter 4 Heartbeat

Chapter 4 Heartbeat

Upon hearing the preparatory bell ring, Zhou Chong looked up from his desk and glanced toward the back door of the classroom, as if sensing something.

Jiang Wan stood there blankly, not yet having recovered her senses, when she met Zhou Chong's gaze.

His eyebrows and eyes were as light as ever, and his upper eyelids were very thin, which made people inexplicably think of the word indifference, something Jiang Wan had truly experienced in him.

Despite being several rows apart, Zhou Chong's face was exceptionally clear in Jiang Wan's eyes.

He has deep-set eyes, a high and straight nose, a clean and smooth jawline, and thin lips that are gently pursed into a straight line.

Last night, when the clouds cleared and the rain stopped, the places she had kissed one by one now appeared before her eyes in a blurry yet direct way.

He lacked some of the maturity and sharpness he would later possess, but remained composed.

Long-lost yet familiar.

Jiang Wanqing could clearly hear something thumping loudly inside her chest.

It even drowned out the shrill bell that echoed throughout the classroom.

While she was still in a daze, someone suddenly bumped her shoulder. Jiang Wan snapped back to reality and turned around to see Sun Qianyu.

"Hey, what are you standing there like an idiot at the door?" Sun Qianyu pointed behind her. "I just saw our teacher walk to the stairwell and will be in the classroom soon. Hurry up and go back to your seat!"

After saying that, Sun Qianyu gave her a push and walked forward first.

Jiang Wan was stunned again. Right, where was her seat?

She quickly grabbed Sun Qianyu and lowered her voice, "Where...am I supposed to sit?"

Sun Qianyu turned around, frowning, wondering if she had misheard. After all, the classroom bell was very loud, so it was possible to mishear.

"What...did you say?"

Jiang Wan didn't have time to talk to her anymore, "Oh, just tell me where to sit!"

As the people around her gradually returned to their seats, Sun Qianyu didn't have time to argue with her at the back door; it wouldn't be good if the homeroom teacher saw them later.

"Over there." She pointed casually and walked straight to the seat by the window.

Jiang Wan quickly followed, walking behind Sun Qianyu towards the window in the direction she pointed.

As I walked, I wondered to myself:

Wasn't Sun Qianyu pointing in the direction of Zhou Chong?

The seat next to Zhou Chong was indeed empty. Could it be that her seat was next to Zhou Chong, which is why he turned to look at her just now?

But she had absolutely no recollection of ever being Zhou Chong's deskmate in her senior year of high school.

Thinking this, she walked slowly, step by step.

She wasn't sure if it was just her imagination, but she felt a cold gaze fixed on her, and as she got closer to Zhou Chong, that gaze grew stronger.

Sun Qianyu walked to the row in front of Zhou Chong, pulled out the chair in the window seat, plopped down, and started packing her schoolbag.

Jiang Wan stood in the aisle next to her, facing two empty seats, one in front of her and one behind her, lost in deep thought.

There are only two empty seats left in the class, and her seat must be one of them.

But is she really Zhou Chong's deskmate?

Why doesn't she believe it?

Sun Qianyu took out her Chinese textbook and was about to open it when she caught a glimpse of Jiang Wan still standing in the aisle as punishment. She grabbed Jiang Wan's hand and pulled her to sit down next to her.

What are you doing?

Jiang Wan seemed to wake from a dream, looked at Sun Qianyu's face, and chuckled twice, "No... nothing."

After saying that, she immediately took off her schoolbag, took out her textbooks and put them on the table one by one, pretending to be very busy.

So her current deskmate is Sun Qianyu. What are you thinking?

She remembered that she and Sun Qianyu had indeed been deskmates for a period of time during the first semester of her senior year of high school.

Later, because the two were too close, the homeroom teacher worried that continuing to be deskmates would affect their studies, so she forcibly separated them.

Sometimes, the thought processes of high school teachers are truly hard to understand.

However, by sheer coincidence, Sun Qianyu later became deskmates with the class monitor, Jiang Shengming, who happened to be her crush.

Sun Qianyu was overjoyed and immediately forgot about her good friend Jiang Wan.

Of course, Jiang Wan only found out about this later.

Speak of the devil, and he appears. Jiang Wan had just opened her Chinese textbook when she saw Jiang Shengming and the homeroom teacher walk into the classroom together.

No wonder Sun Qianyu said with such certainty that she saw the homeroom teacher earlier; it turns out she saw the homeroom teacher next to Jiang Shengming while she was looking at him.

Jiang Wan quietly turned her head and saw Sun Qianyu holding a Chinese textbook, her eyes constantly glancing towards the back door. She almost couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Jiang Shengming nodded to the homeroom teacher and then walked towards them.

He walked behind Jiang Wan, stopped, pulled out a chair, and sat down in the empty seat next to Zhou Chong.

Oh, so Zhou Chong's deskmate at this time was Jiang Shengming.

Jiang Wan listened to the commotion behind him and heard Jiang Shengming begin reciting "Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng," with a few soft, low male voices that didn't belong to him mixed in.

Although it's not as deep and magnetic as it is now, it's still clear and pleasant to listen to.

Jiang Wan listened for a long time but still couldn't figure out which text Zhou Chong was reciting, while she flipped through her own book for a long time without moving it.

Suddenly, Jiang Wan heard Sun Qianyu coughing, a deliberately dry cough. She snapped back to reality and saw her homeroom teacher approaching her.

She quickly started reading aloud from the textbook in front of her.

Their homeroom teacher, surnamed Fan, was their physics teacher. He was a middle-aged man in his forties, of medium build, wearing black-rimmed glasses. He looked kind and gentle, but in fact, he was very strict with them.

Upon seeing Teacher Fan's face, Jiang Wan instantly recalled many memories from her senior year of high school.

Morning reading is a Chinese and English session, and has nothing to do with physics. As the homeroom teacher, Ms. Fan only glances at the discipline symbolically.

He walked around the entire classroom once, then walked out with his hands behind his back.

Jiang Wan finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"What were you spacing out about just now?" Sun Qianyu nudged her elbow. "You didn't even see the teacher when he came. Luckily, I reminded you."

Jiang Wan didn't answer what she was daydreaming about, but just smiled gratefully at her, "Thanks to you, thank you."

Sun Qianyu raised an eyebrow, gave her a flirtatious wink, and then looked away to continue reciting her text.

Jiang Wan glanced at the students around her who were diligently memorizing their lessons, sighed softly, and joined their ranks.

She had completely forgotten all the required texts for high school Chinese, and she needed to pick them up quickly, as these were the easiest points to get in the college entrance examination.
