Chapter 13 Plum Garden
After a whole evening self-study session, Jiang Wan had figured out all the monthly exam papers and also roughly reviewed the knowledge points she was currently studying.
Although I'm still far from being as good as I used to be, at least I'm not completely clueless anymore. Those long-forgotten fragments of knowledge from my memories are starting to piece together in my mind.
Overall, it's a good start.
Of course, Zhou Chong's help was indispensable. During the first evening self-study session after they became deskmates, she insisted on asking Jiang Wan a lot of questions, which made Jiang Wan feel a little embarrassed.
Although she was thick-skinned, Zhou Chong had patiently taught her all night, so she should at least express her gratitude, even if it was just a token gesture.
After evening self-study, everyone was packing up their things.
Jiang Wan picked up her schoolbag and rummaged through it, pulling out a bottle of plum juice.
Great! There's still a bottle of plum orchard that I haven't had a chance to drink yet. I can use it as a temporary treat.
She held up the bottle of plum orchards with delight and handed it to Zhou Chong, saying, "This is for you."
Zhou Chong paused in tidying up his homework, glanced at the bottle of plum juice, then turned to Jiang Wan, his tone inexplicably puzzled, "Should we drink more sweetened milk tonight to replenish our sugar levels?"
Jiang Wan was stunned and almost burst out laughing.
Unexpectedly, Zhou Chong actually took the reason she made up yesterday seriously and even remembered it.
She pursed her lips, composed herself, and said seriously, "Yes, that's right. Drinking some sweet milk at night can help you sleep better."
After she finished speaking, she waited for a while and saw that Zhou Chong still did not reach out to take it, as if he was somewhat doubtful of what she said.
Jiang Wan decided to go all the way and simply shoved the plum orchard into his hands.
Zhou Chong was stunned for a moment, looking at the extra milk in his hand. After a few seconds, he asked, "Why?"
"Huh?" Jiang Wan was looking down at her weekend homework when she heard his words. She looked up a beat late. "What? Why?"
Zhou Chong gripped the plum orchard tightly in his hand, his thin lips pursed slightly, "Why did you give it to me?"
Not only today, but also yesterday.
Jiang Wan blinked and smiled at him, "You taught me so many problems tonight, so it's because I used up some brain cells. Drinking some sweet milk before bed is good for sleep, right?"
After saying that, she slung her packed backpack over her shoulder, stood up, and waved to Zhou Chong.
Goodnight, see you next Monday!
Zhou Chong remained seated, watching Jiang Wan walk briskly out of the classroom, her ponytail swaying behind her head, radiating youthful beauty.
Only after the figure disappeared from his sight did he lower his head, unzip his backpack, and put the plum jar into the hidden compartment.
There's another bottle inside.
He didn't drink yesterday.
He thought that such good fortune would only come once in a lifetime, so he didn't want to drink it.
Although today she only wanted to thank him for his help, she kept things separate and was very clear about the details.
She shouldn't overthink it; she's Jiang Wan, after all.
-
For high school seniors, the biggest use of the weekend is catching up on sleep.
There's no way I can go out and play; I have so much homework it's enough to kill me.
Even sleeping in is strictly controlled by Ms. Shan Tong; she must get up and eat breakfast before eight o'clock.
Jiang Wan sat down at the dining table, yawning, her face full of resentment.
"Oh dear, look at you, a vibrant high school student, like the sun at seven or eight in the morning," Shan Tong muttered as she served her porridge. "Where is there even a trace of the sun in you?"
Jiang Wan glanced at her speechlessly, took the bowl of porridge, puffed out her cheeks, and blew away the rising steam.
Seventeen or eighteen-year-old high school students are like the rising sun at seven or eight o'clock in the morning.
She's already twenty-eight years old, so of course she's no longer the sun at all.
Dan Tong noticed her listlessness and rubbed her face. "Alright, Wanwan, you've worked hard studying. Tonight, Mom will bring you some roast pigeon from Yuxing Restaurant. It's your favorite."
Yuxing Restaurant is a well-known time-honored restaurant in Lincheng, which has stood the test of time for decades and firmly holds the top position in Lincheng's high-end catering industry.
Because Yuxing Restaurant is very close to the Yujing No. 1 Villa area, Jiang Wan's family has often gone there for meals since she was a child, and Jiang Wan really loves their signature roast pigeon.
Even when Jiang Wan was twenty-eight, she would still occasionally go to Yuxing Restaurant to pack a roast pigeon to take home.
On the contrary, during her three years of high school, she and her parents moved to live near Lincheng No. 1 High School, which was far from the villa area, and she rarely went to Yuxing Restaurant to eat.
"Mom, are you going over there this afternoon?" Jiang Wan took a sip of porridge. "Is it really necessary to make a special detour?"
Lincheng No. 1 Middle School and Yuxing Restaurant are located in the east and west of the city respectively. Jiang Wan did not think that her mother would travel across most of Lincheng just to buy her a pigeon.
After all, if that's the case, why not just call Yuxing Restaurant and have them deliver takeout?
"Yes, that's right." Shan Tong nodded. "I'm going back to the villa this afternoon to buy some imported blood pressure medication for your grandma. I'll deliver it to her when I have time today."
Jiang Wan was startled, put down her porridge bowl, and slowly raised her eyes. "Mom, I'll go too."
"You're going too?" Shan Tong asked casually. "Don't you have much homework this weekend?"
"Yes, yes." Jiang Wan nodded, her tone resolute. "But I still want to go. I want to go back and see my grandma."
"I'm just going back to deliver some medicine. I'll be back soon. Winter break starts in a little over a month, right? We can go back together for Chinese New Year and spend more time with Grandma..."
Before Shan Tong could finish speaking, Jiang Wan interrupted her directly, "I will definitely go back for the New Year, but I want to go back and visit first."
Jiang Wan felt as if she hadn't seen her grandmother in a long time before she returned here, less than six months after her grandmother's passing.
That grandmother, who looked ten years younger, was still full of energy.
Dan Tong seemed to be intimidated by Jiang Wan's resolute attitude, and without saying anything more, she nodded blankly and agreed: "Okay, let's go back together then."
