Chapter 88 It Doesn't Hurt
The school doctor took out a thermometer and held it up in front of her eyes. "She has a slight fever, 39.1℃."
Jiang Wan breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this.
Fortunately, she really did have a fever, so there was no need to bother explaining the strange blush on her face anymore.
Zhou Chong, standing beside him, frowned immediately. "Your temperature is so high, is it serious? Should we give you an IV drip or fever reducer? How long will it take for the fever to go down?"
The school doctor put away the thermometer. "It's not serious, just a cold and fever. It's been cold lately these past few days, so it's easy to catch a chill. If you want the fever to go down quickly, you can get an IV drip and take some cold medicine."
“Okay.” Zhou Chong nodded, his brows still furrowed. “Then please prescribe the medicine. I’ll go pay the bill. Could you please hang up the IV drip for her?”
"Okay, wait a minute." The school doctor sat back down at the computer, wrote out the prescription, handed it to Zhou Chong, and then went to the inner room to prepare the medicine and IV drip.
Zhou Chong pulled Jiang Wan to sit on the hospital bed. "You rest for a while, I'll go pay the bill and get the medicine."
"Okay." Jiang Wan sat on the edge of the bed, glanced back at the school doctor's figure behind the curtain, and hooked Zhou Chong's little finger. "Come back soon."
Zhou Chong knew she was afraid of pain and physically resistant to injections, so he gently squeezed her palm and said, "I'll be back soon, don't be afraid."
Jiang Wan was slightly taken aback.
How did Zhou Chong know she was a little afraid of injections?
Just from that one sentence she said and that little gesture of hooking his little finger, she could tell?
Jiang Wan was still marveling at Zhou Chong's extraordinary observation and perception when Zhou Chong had already gone outside to pay the bill.
Zhou Chong had just paid and taken the medicine bag from the counter when he heard a deafening scream from the inner room.
"Ouch—it hurts!"
He immediately lifted the curtain and ran inside.
Jiang Wan was sitting on the hospital bed, clutching the blanket with one hand and having her other hand firmly held by the school doctor. A long needle was piercing the skin of her hand, and her wrinkled little face was contorted with pain.
As soon as she saw Zhou Chong, she gritted her teeth, raised her head, and called out to him in a muffled voice, "Zhou Chong..."
Zhou Chong sat down next to her, put the medicine bag aside, wrapped his large hand around the hand that was clutching the blanket, and placed his other hand on the back of her head, pressing her head against his chest to block her view.
"It doesn't hurt, it doesn't hurt, it'll be over soon," he coaxed softly, gently stroking her head.
Jiang Wan nestled in his arms, closed her eyes, and sniffled pitifully.
"Okay, it's just a needle prick, why make it look like you're slaughtering a pig?"
The school doctor held Jiang Wan's hand, pulled over a piece of tape, secured the needle, straightened up, glanced at the two people on the hospital bed, coughed lightly twice, and reminded them again, "It's all better now."
Zhou Chong realized what was happening, released his hand from behind Jiang Wan's head, and turned around to thank the school doctor.
Jiang Wan opened her eyes, her head still resting against Zhou Chong's chest. She turned her head and blinked, "Is it all better now?"
She was clearly looking at the school doctor, but the person who answered was Zhou Chong.
"Okay, it doesn't hurt anymore."
"Then why does my hand still hurt?" Jiang Wan pouted, looking aggrieved.
Zhou Chong turned slightly to the side, blocking their still clasped hands, and gently rubbed Jiang Wan's palm. "Does it still hurt?"
It wasn't that hand, Jiang Wan bit her lip. "It seems... a little better."
The school doctor was a middle-aged woman who had worked in the school clinic for half her life. She was used to seeing young people secretly dating in the clinic, so she was not surprised by such scenes.
With her hands in the pockets of her white coat, she said, "Remember to call me when the IV is almost finished," and then turned and walked back to her office.
As she lifted the curtain, she sighed and shook her head. "These high school students nowadays, tsk tsk."
Zhou Chong sensed the sarcasm in the school doctor's words and, thinking that he was no longer a high school student, automatically distanced himself from the subject of the teasing.
Looking down, I saw the small, fair hand I was holding in my palm, and I suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
Jiang Wan was only an eighteen-year-old high school student. Although she hadn't started dating him, she didn't know why she felt guilty.
Just as he was laughing at himself in his heart, he suddenly heard a soft laugh.
Zhou Chong looked up and saw Jiang Wan looking at him, her eyebrows and eyes smiling gently, her eyes bright.
"What are you laughing at?" He felt a little uncomfortable and wanted to let go, as if some of his unspeakable thoughts were about to be exposed by her direct gaze.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he let go, Jiang Wan grabbed his hand instead.
Jiang Wan curled her fingers and scratched his palm. "Did you hear what the school nurse was saying about us?"
Zhou Chong lowered his eyes and said, "Hmm."
"So you could tell!" Jiang Wan laughed even harder. "I thought you couldn't understand."
Zhou Chong chuckled, "Why wouldn't I understand? I'm not stupid."
“Oh yeah, you’re not stupid, you’re very smart, so…” Jiang Wan leaned forward, resting her chin on Zhou Chong’s shoulder, her fingertips still scratching his palm in circles, “You did that on purpose in front of the school nurse just now, didn’t you?”
"...How do you do it?"
Jiang Wan smiled softly, lowered her head, and slowly slid her head down along his shoulder line, pressing her cheek against his chest. "Like this."
Zhou Chong's Adam's apple bobbed. "No."
“Yes, how could it not be?” Jiang Wan squeezed his palm. “Be honest, the school nurse saw it all.”
“It wasn’t intentional.” Zhou Chong lowered his head and looked into her eyes. “I’m being honest.”
Jiang Wan was taken aback. When she looked up, she met Zhou Chong's staring gaze, and her heart skipped a beat.
If it wasn't intentional, then it must have come from the heart.
Jiang Wan thought, "Can I take that as you want to hug me?"
Although thinking this way is narcissistic, Jiang Wan looked at Zhou Chong's serious expression with his thin lips pursed, and regardless of whether it was true or not, she really wanted to tease him.
"So you mean... cough cough."
Before she could even finish a sentence, Jiang Wan's throat suddenly felt dry and itchy, and she couldn't help but cough.
The more I cough, the more my throat hurts, and the redness on both sides of my cheeks intensifies.
Zhou Chong gently patted her back until she calmed down, then supported her back and helped her lie half-reclined on the bed. "Don't talk, just rest for a while."
Jiang Wan nodded, swallowing hard.
Before she could even manage to speak, Zhou Chong saw through her thoughts and asked, "Would you like some water?"
Jiang Wan nodded again.
Zhou Chong got up, went into the school doctor's office, got a cup of hot water from her, and walked back to the bedside while blowing on the steam.
"It might still be a little hot, be careful." He brought the water glass to Jiang Wan's lips.
"Hmm." Jiang Wan turned her head and took a small sip. "It's okay, it's not hot anymore."
"Then have some more." Zhou Chong tilted the glass a little more.
After Jiang Wan finished drinking the water, Zhou Chong put the cup aside, looked up at the IV drip level, and said, "It'll be a while before you get some sleep. You should get some rest."
Jiang Wan slowly lay down and blinked. "And what about you?"
"I'll keep an eye on it for you." Zhou Chong looked away from the IV drip, bent down, and tucked the blanket around Jiang Wan. "You'll feel much better after a good night's sleep."
Jiang Wan quietly reached out from under the covers, took Zhou Chong's hand, and then closed her eyes. "Okay, I'm going to sleep."
After saying that, she turned her head away, closed her eyes, and pretended to be asleep.
Zhou Chong couldn't help but chuckle, then sat back down in the chair in front of the hospital bed, took Jiang Wan's hand in his palm, and gently stroked it. "Sleep."
Being sick is still uncomfortable, and a fever makes you dizzy and lightheaded. Before long, Jiang Wan fell asleep in a daze.
The person on the hospital bed gradually calmed down. Zhou Chong tucked her hand back into the blanket, tucked the corner of the blanket in, glanced at the time on his wrist, and then looked up at the IV drip.
He estimated it would take another hour or so to finish the IV drip, and after thinking for a moment, he got up and went into the school doctor's office.
"It's all gone by now?" The school doctor looked up.
"Not yet." Zhou Chong shook his head. "She's asleep. I'm going to get her some food. I'll be right back. Could you please keep an eye on her for me?"
The school doctor glanced at the wall clock and said, "Okay, you can go now."
Just as Zhou Chong was about to leave, the school doctor suddenly called out to him, "Young man, could you also get me some food? Just grab any two dishes from the cafeteria."
"Okay." Zhou Chong agreed, turned around and walked out.
