Chapter 12 Shameless

Yuan Zhao's words caused Old Madam Zhou's pupils to shrink sharply. She looked at Yuan Zhao in surprise, seemingly not expecting that Yuan Zhao, who had always been mute, could actually say such a thing.

This is a bit troublesome.

She was annoyed, but she didn't show it on her face. Instead, she pretended to be surprised.

"I had no idea such a thing happened!"

Yuan Zhao sneered inwardly upon hearing this.

"I had no idea," what a convenient "I had no idea"!

This vast mansion was under her control, yet she claimed to be unaware of it.

Yuan Zhao felt disgusted, but said aloud:

"Grandmother is in poor health and doesn't manage household affairs much, so naturally she wouldn't know."

"Many people know about what happened last night, such as my granddaughter-in-law being locked out, and about this morning's breakfast. You can find out by asking."

The commotion last night and this morning was quite significant, and they couldn't cover it up no matter what they tried.

Old Madam Zhou clearly understood this as well, and she said angrily:

"Zhao'er has been wronged."

"What's wrong with you? How could you treat Zhao'er like this?"

The last sentence was said to Zhou's mother, since she was now in charge and she had to take the blame. Besides, Zhou's mother was not wronged.

Without her indulgence, where would those servants have gotten the audacity to do such a thing?

"Mother, don't be fooled by her, she was the one who broke her promise first..."

Zhou's mother wanted to say more, but was hurriedly interrupted by Old Madam Zhou:

"Shut up! What kind of nonsense are you spouting?"

Although everyone knew the truth, they couldn't bring it up, especially with so many people around. If word got out, it would be a disgrace to the Marquis's mansion.

Zhou's mother clearly realized this as well. She was just too angry. She didn't expect to be turned around and blamed by this woman.

Old Madam Zhou didn't want to escalate the situation, so she could only try to smooth things over.

Her vision was more far-reaching than that of Zhou's mother and Zhou Shiyuan, who had just returned. Now that the General's Mansion was at its zenith, who would dare to offend the Yuan family at this time?

Thinking of this, she slowly said:

“You were wrong to do this. Come down and make it up to Zhao’er.”

Once she spoke, even if Zhou's mother was unwilling, she had no choice but to reluctantly agree.

Seeing her nod, Old Madam Zhou then looked at Zhou Shiyuan:

“Shiyuan, Zhao’er has suffered a lot for you and the Marquis’s mansion these past three years. You can’t treat her like this.”

"She is your wife, you should respect and love her well."

If it were Yuan Zhao from her past life, she would probably have been moved to tears upon hearing these words. However, at this moment, Yuan Zhao felt only utter disgust upon hearing them.

The entire Yongning Marquis's mansion is rotten to the core; there isn't a single good person among them.

Zhou Shiyuan was somewhat embarrassed after being lectured by Old Madam Zhou. He hadn't expected Yuan Zhao to change her attitude so quickly.

She acted like a shrew when she first confronted him, but when her grandmother arrived, she learned to cry and complain.

This made him increasingly annoyed with Yuan Zhao.

He had just returned and was unaware of the current situation, let alone how the Yongning Marquis's residence had come to be. He spoke according to his own nature:

“Grandmother, you say I’m wrong, but have you ever seen a wife and husband fight?”

Old Madam Zhou raised an eyebrow, about to go and cause trouble for Yuan Zhao, when she heard Yuan Zhao say:

"My lord, you can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want."

“I only had Wenfeng and Linglong throw that bitch out, but I didn’t let anyone touch you.”

"You risked your life to protect that bitch."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Shiyuan's forehead veins bulged with anger:

"Watch your mouth! She's my wife, who's the slut?"

Zhou Shiyuan said those words out of anger, as he had never won against Yuan Zhao since he returned.

The moment he uttered those words, he knew things were going badly; both Zhou's mother and the matriarch of the Zhou family changed their expressions.

Yuan Zhao's eyes lit up, and she stared intently at him, slowly asking:

"My lord, she is the wife you married, so what am I?"
