Chapter 99: The Evil One

When the sun rises from the east, a new day begins.

The courtyard, which had been silent for a whole night, became lively again. The men who were working squatted shirtless beside the sink, brushing their teeth and washing their faces while making harmless jokes.

The women went into the kitchen and began preparing breakfast for the morning.

Ye Li pushed Jiang Xun to the yard to wash up. After seeing that he had finished washing, she handed him the towel and left him alone, going to the kitchen to cook.

Since the family split up, the Jiang family's kitchen has been used in different time periods.

Zhao Xingmei gets up the earliest every day and always cooks the first pot of rice.

Jiang Rui and his wife occasionally cook at home.

When Hu Jingjing was still around, the two of them often didn't cook. Now that Jiang Xi is alone, he eats with Zhao Xingmei.

Ye Li also does it sometimes, but more often he buys breakfast outside, which saves time, effort and trouble.

...

...

Today, she got up early and went to the kitchen to make a simple breakfast.

When she entered the kitchen, she saw that her mother-in-law Zhao Xingmei had already finished her breakfast and had freed up the stove for her.

"Mom, what are you smelling?"

"Ye Li, can you smell the indescribable smell in our kitchen?"

Ye Li sniffed twice vigorously, and indeed, there was a faint unpleasant smell in the air.

"Is something broken?"

"Maybe. My things are all fine. Can you see if your things are broken?"

"Mom, Jiang Xun had dinner with you last night. I ate outside last night. It's definitely not our food that's broken."

"That's the second brother's." Zhao Xingmei thought about opening the second brother's cupboard where the dishes were kept and taking a look, but then she changed her mind and said, "Forget it, I won't touch her things! She is such a petty person..."

As soon as she finished speaking, Wang Sha came in yawning and happened to hear everything Zhao Xingmei said clearly.

"Mom, what are you planning behind my back?"

"Filming you? I'm telling the truth! Did you stew pork ribs last night? No matter what delicious food your sister-in-law makes, she knows to send some to me and your dad. What about you? You stewed pork ribs yesterday, and the two of you ate it alone!" Zhao Xingmei complained about this.

Wang Sha laughed shyly: "Mom, look at what you said. We didn't buy much last night... Jiang Rui, the greedy guy, complained that there wasn't enough to eat. But don't worry, I'll stew some more meat tomorrow and I'll send some to you no matter what."

"Okay, I'll be waiting."

"Don't worry." Wang Sha said this, and came over to see what Zhao Xingmei had cooked.

Zhao Xingmei's breakfast was just dumpling soup with a plate of pickles, nothing else to eat.

She came to see the meal Ye Li had prepared. She made four pieces of salty food, fried some shredded potatoes, and fried two eggs. She also cooked a few strands of noodles in the pot and sprinkled some chopped green onions on them. It smelled delicious.

"Sister-in-law, this food is delicious."

Ye Li smiled and said, "It will be ready soon. It's your turn."

"Okay." Wang Sha saw that Ye Li's meal was good, so she didn't shy away from her. She opened her cupboard and took out half a pot of meat soup. "My breakfast is simple too. Let's cook some noodles with the leftover meat soup from last night. My Jiang Rui is very greedy... He says every day that he has no oil in his stomach, can't eat well, and has no energy to work!"

Ye Li smiled, said nothing, served his meal, and was about to walk out.

"Sister-in-law, wait a minute." Wang Sha was preparing to cook when she suddenly smelled her own broth and it smelled something wrong. "Help me smell it. Does this broth have a weird smell?"

When she mentioned that the broth had a bad smell, Ye Li remembered what she had just told her mother-in-law about the evil smell in the kitchen.

The smell really came from Wang Sha's things.

She leaned forward and sniffed the broth, and indeed there was an indescribable smell.

"Isn't your broth spoiled?"

"How is this possible? I just stewed this meat last night, and the broth was only left overnight, how could it go bad?"

Ye Li smelled it carefully again, and the taste of the broth was indeed not right, but she really couldn't tell what the specific smell was.

"Wang Sha, don't eat this broth. It's probably gone bad!"

"Sister-in-law, last time I kept this broth for two days and it didn't go bad! As long as the broth is heated up, there's no big problem if it's kept for two days."

"Then I don't know."

Wang Sha felt it was a pity to throw away the broth, as there was still quite a lot of minced meat in the broth. So she put two eggs in the broth, cooked a few pounds of noodles, and sprinkled some chopped green onions on it. The taste was so delicious.

"Sister-in-law, I don't think it's broken! Maybe there's something wrong with my nose. Let's heat it up and smell it again."

Wang Sha was reluctant to throw away the broth, so she poured it directly into the iron pot to heat it.

Seeing that she didn't listen to his advice, Ye Li said to her, "It's hot in the summer, and food can easily go bad. If you get an upset stomach or gastroenteritis, you'll have to go to the hospital and spend money and suffer. It's really not worth it!"

Wang Sha didn't want to listen to Ye Li's advice at first, but when she poured the broth into the pot, she discovered the problem.

"That's not right. Where did all the minced meat in my soup go? There's still a lot of minced meat in my soup! The color of the soup isn't right either!"

Wang Sha called Ye Li over to take a look. As the two of them observed, small bubbles had already begun to appear on the edge of the soup.

"The soup is yellow in color." Ye Li pointed at the increasing amount of foam gathering on the soup. "Look! This soup is definitely not right! Wang Sha, why do I feel like... there's like... urine in this soup!"

As soon as Ye Li finished speaking, the smell came up.

When heated, the smell of the broth completely covered up the smell of urine, and the kitchen was instantly filled with this foul smell.

“Ugh—” Wang Sha couldn’t help but dry heaving twice, a surge of anger rising into her heart, “Who is the shameless one who did this! Ahhhhhh——”

Wang Sha's scream echoed out of the kitchen. People who were getting up to wash in the yard heard the noise and crowded over to watch the fun.

"What's wrong? What's going on?"

"Urine! Someone put urine in my broth! Which bastard put urine in it?"

"Isn't your kitchen locked at night?"

Wang Sha was stunned and suddenly remembered that she had indeed forgotten to lock the door of the kitchen when she was the last one to visit last night.

"I...I forgot!"

"Then you forgot, who can you blame for this?"

"So that's a reason to pee in my rice bowl! Who? Who did it? Stand up!"

The onlookers all said that it was not them.

Wang Sha rushed to the yard and started yelling, "Which black-hearted bastard did this? You guys can come up with such a rotten idea! You stole someone else's broth and used urine to make up for it, right? Who the hell came up with this rotten idea that will end my family lineage? Get out now!"

She shouted and cursed in the yard for a long time, but no one stood up.

When Jiang Rui heard his wife scolding him, he quickly ran out of the house and pulled her back inside: "Don't scold me anymore!"

"Why shouldn't I curse? Who is the wicked person who did this? I don't bother anyone in this compound on a daily basis, so who is retaliating against me like this?! I must find out! I want him to compensate me for my broth! I will curse him so hard that he can't even hold his head up in this compound!" Wang Sha cursed angrily.
