Chapter 454 My Pot is Burnt
Bai Lan nodded, then suddenly sniffed the air. "Oh dear, my pot is burnt."
She rushed into the kitchen. Jiang Wanjun wanted to ask more questions, but then she realized there was no need to ask anymore.
He then turned back and headed towards the study.
Mu Yunzhou, who was hiding by the study window and secretly watching outside, saw Jiang Wanjun and immediately sat back down behind his desk. In his haste to run, he accidentally bumped his foot on the corner of the desk.
He clutched his foot in pain and hissed, then quickly sat back down when he heard the door open.
He picked up the book and began reading with a serious expression.
Jiang Wanjun walked forward with a smile, tilting her head slightly to one side, "My husband is reading the Analects."
Jiang Wanjun almost never called Mu Yunzhou her husband, except on their wedding night.
Hearing the word "husband," Mu Yunzhou felt a surge of tenderness in his heart. He resisted the urge to hug her and continued reading the book in his hands.
Jiang Wanjun smiled and said, "Husband, you read this book very well. Reading the book backwards should help you remember it faster and more efficiently. Next year, you will surely become the top scholar."
Mu Yunzhou remained silent, simply straightening the book in his hands.
Jiang Wanjun smiled and reached out to take the book from Mu Yunzhou's hand, then sat on Mu Yunzhou's lap.
Mu Yunzhou turned his face away, "What is Lord Jiang doing?"
Jiang Wanjun found it amusing and laughed, "Are you jealous? You know my current status; those people outside are just for show."
"You are the most important one in the family."
Mu Yunzhou stared at Jiang Wanjun with his beautiful eyes, looking at her with a hint of resentment. "Just to get by?"
"I really didn't know that becoming an official required dealing with such things. May I ask who that brother is? Why don't you come find me so I can give up this position?"
"I'm afraid that won't work," Jiang Wanjun said, frowning. "That young master... his status is so noble, how could this small Jiang residence possibly accommodate him?"
"It must be a place thousands or even tens of thousands of times larger than this Jiang residence."
Mu Yunzhou felt his chest swell with anger. "Since it's so precious, why not spend the money to build a better mansion for it?"
“My husband’s idea is good, but I’m afraid that young master can’t stay for long, because he has a place to stay.”
"You have a place to stay?" Mu Yunzhou looked up. "Is it in the capital? I wonder which family's young master is so highly regarded and cherished by our third-ranked scholar."
"I wonder when you two met?" Mu Yunzhou asked casually, feigning indifference.
Jiang Wanjun said with a smile, "I go to his house every day."
"I go there every morning."
"So I didn't know you were so busy. After court, you had to go to another home before coming back?"
Seeing Mu Yunzhou's unpleasant expression, as if he were consumed by jealousy, Jiang Wanjun couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Yes, I go there every day."
"Does my husband truly not understand?"
"What should I understand?" Mu Yunzhou asked. "Do I understand the feelings between you two?"
"Or does Lord Jiang also want to be like those men, with three wives and four concubines, plus countless mistresses? What about your promise of 'one love for life' from the beginning?"
"Is all this just talk?"
"I would love to have three wives and four concubines, but the person I went shopping with yesterday is already married and has children."
Mu Yunzhou's eyes widened immediately. "Married? You actually... you actually went and broke up someone else's family?"
"Didn't you always say you wanted to seek justice for women everywhere? How could you do such a thing?"
Mu Yunzhou said with some anger, "Is the corruption in officialdom really that powerful, that it has changed you so much in just a few months?"
"Or were you deliberately playing a trick on me from the beginning?"
Seeing that Mu Yunzhou was really angry, Jiang Wanjun realized that teasing him any longer might lead to trouble, so she laughed and said, "You really are a fool."
“I admit I’m a fool, but so what? At least I take our feelings for granted.”
"I love you, so I don't care what others say about me marrying up or marrying into your family. I only know that you are the one I love, but now it seems..."
Jiang Wanjun reached out and covered Mu Yunzhou's mouth, "Alright, you're not allowed to say anything more."
"I don't want to hear those words from you."
Mu Yunzhou turned his face away, tears welling up in his eyes. Jiang Wanjun said softly, "You really don't know who I went shopping with yesterday?"
Seeing that Mu Yunzhou remained silent, Jiang Wanjun could only answer herself, "Yesterday I left the palace with the Empress Dowager, but for safety reasons, the Empress Dowager wore men's clothing."
Mu Yunzhou stood frozen in place for a long while before slowly speaking, "You mean... the Empress Dowager?"
Jiang Wanjun smiled and nodded, "Have you forgotten the instructions my older sister gave me?"
"I was doing this to complete the task my older sister gave me, but my purse was stolen last night, so I had to put it on credit and ask her to come back for it the next day."
"Then why didn't you come home all night?" Mu Yunzhou's tone softened a bit.
“We caught someone yesterday who has information about my sister’s whereabouts. It was too late, so I stayed at the Prince’s residence with the Empress Dowager. I went to the morning court this morning.”
"That's when I rushed back."
As Jiang Wanjun spoke, she deliberately thumped her shoulder.
Seeing that Jiang Wanjun was exhausted, Mu Yunzhou felt a pang of heartache and reached out to massage her.
“It’s also my fault,” Jiang Wanjun said. “I was so excited when I heard the news about my sister that I forgot to have someone pass on the message to you.”
"I thought I'd come and tell you this morning after the morning court session."
When she pressed on the blocked meridian, Jiang Wanjun frowned slightly, and Mu Yunzhou softened his movements. "I misunderstood you."
"Eat something first, and get some rest."
Jiang Wanjun shook her head. "I just came to tell you that I have to go to Dali Temple later."
"The Han family's affairs need to be thoroughly investigated."
"Is it in such a hurry?"
"It's best to act quickly at times like this, without giving them any chance to breathe," Jiang Wanjun said. "The Han family actually dared to forcibly abduct a young woman to be married off to a ghost."
“You exterminated your entire clan, and I will also bring Han Fei, the culprit, to justice.”
"Although the person being arranged for the ghost marriage is Han Fei's nephew, how could they dare to do it without the consent of Han Fei, the person in charge of the Han family clan?"
"Such a thing exists?" Mu Yunzhou exclaimed in surprise. "It should be thoroughly investigated."
"I never expected Han Fei to be this kind of person. I used to think he would be a good official," Mu Yunzhou said. "What happened when you said you had news about my sister?"
Jiang Wanjun recounted everything that happened last night. "Alright, it's getting late, I'll be going now."
Jiang Wanjun glanced out the window, stood up, and straightened her official robes. "You should stay home and study hard."
