Chapter 8 Wang Zhaoguo

The members all looked on with longing at the thought of watching a movie soon.

After Yang Chunqin called out "Hello," she shrank back, steadied herself, and began her first broadcast, "Hello, hello, fellow members, can you all hear me?"

Everyone in the brigade was listening intently, and when they heard Yang Chunqin's announcement, they burst into laughter. Those who loved a good laugh shouted back, "We heard that!"

This is so lively!

The village committee's windows were open, and the lively atmosphere outside drifted in, making Yang Chunqin incredibly happy!

This beauty dispelled all the previous caution.

"Thanks to the technicians from the power company, our brigade finally has electricity today! From now on, our nights won't be dark anymore. Just flip a switch, and the lights shine brightly, like the sun is out. And this loudspeaker, isn't it great? I can speak normally from my office, and the whole village can hear me. We don't need to call each household anymore to give announcements. Work starts, work ends—just turn on the loudspeaker! Electricity is so convenient! This is all thanks to the Party and the country for bringing us such good days! As long as we follow the Party and the country, our lives will only get better and better."

Today is the first time our loudspeaker has been used, and I'd like to share some incredibly good news with you all. Have you heard that the Agricultural Research Institute has developed a new, high-yield rice variety? Unfortunately, this variety is extremely rare; the commune has been trying hard but hasn't been able to obtain it. But thanks to the efforts of our comrade Xu Mingyang, we've managed to get our hands on it. You can imagine the difficulties involved. Comrade Xu Mingyang is a great hero to our brigade! Tomorrow, the brigade will begin cultivating rice seedlings. As long as everyone works hard, the goal of having enough to eat and eating well won't be too far away.”

The whole village was overjoyed when they heard that the brigade had acquired new grain seeds.

The benefits of this grain variety have been widely known, spreading from one production brigade to another. In places where it has been grown, the story is incredibly storied, with people saying that the yield is twice that of the previous crop, and that the rice stalks can't even support the rice when it's in the ear-bearing stage.

I don't know if what they said is true, but it's definitely better than the original one, otherwise the Academy of Agricultural Sciences wouldn't have promoted it after the trial was successful.

The children didn't know what the adults were excited about, but seeing how happy they were, they were happy too, and ran around excitedly.

The power technician who installed the loudspeaker and laid the power lines for the village committee was named Wang Zhaoguo. He was also the leader of the team that came to the village to lay the power lines. I heard that he was originally an educated youth who went to the countryside, and he was also a college graduate from a worker-peasant-soldier university. He was among the first batch of technicians after the county's power department was established.

When Wang Zhaoguo heard Yang Chunqin's words, he glanced at Xu Mingyang. Xu Mingyang used to be a reconnaissance soldier and was very sensitive. When Wang Zhaoguo glanced at him, he looked back openly.

Wang Zhaoguo was surprised by Xu Mingyang's keen insight, and after a moment of surprise, he smiled.

Xu Mingyang was a cold person, and he couldn't even manage a smile for strangers; he simply nodded politely.

Xu Xinning also felt Wang Zhaoguo's gaze and glanced at him curiously.

Yang Chunqin turned off the loudspeaker, still seemingly in a state of excitement. She stood up and smiled at Wang Zhaoguo, saying, "Comrade Wang, thank you so much. It's getting late, why don't you invite the other comrades to my house for a meal?"

Wang Zhaoguo: "Captain Yang, there's no need to be so polite. Nobody has enough food these days, and we all brought our own dry rations with us."

Yang Chunqin: "Do you think our brigade is so heartless? How could we let our guests go hungry? Besides, you have done our brigade a great favor."

Wang Zhaoguo: "This is our job, and it's something we should do diligently."

Yang Chunqin: "Comrade Wang, please don't be so polite. Chairman Mao said that people are like steel and food is like iron. Only when we are well-fed can we better serve the people. We've already cooked at home, so we can't let everyone's kindness go to waste."

Wang Zhaoguo: "Alright, we won't stand on ceremony then, but we all get a meal allowance when we come out, so Captain Yang can't refuse our food coupons."

Yang Chunqin: "Alright, we won't stand on ceremony with you. This is our cousin Xu Mingyang. Let him have a drink with you today."

Wang Zhaoguo: "Comrade Xu retired from the army?"

Xu Mingyang nodded rather unenthusiastically.

Yang Chunqin: "Comrade Wang has a good eye. My brother has been retired for many years."

Wang Zhaoguo: "Comrade Xu's posture clearly indicates that he came from the military. I've had a dream of being a soldier since I was a child, but unfortunately, I didn't achieve it when I grew up."

Yang Chunqin: "Although Comrade Wang's dream of becoming a soldier did not come true, how many college students like you are there now! Come on, let my brother tell you about military life when we eat later, so you can have a taste of it."

Wang Zhaoguo: "That's great! I love listening to stories from the military."

When Yang Chunqin went out in the morning, she ran into Wang Ying next door and asked her to help Grandma Xu cook lunch. Usually, when Yang Chunqin was busy, Grandma Xu would cook the meals at home, with Xu Xinning helping out. But today, Xu Xinning was also busy, and they were having guests over for lunch. Yang Chunqin was worried that Grandma Xu wouldn't be able to manage on her own, so she asked Wang Ying for help.

A close neighbor is worse than a distant relative, and since they had both served in the army together before, Wang Ying and Yang Chunqin had a good relationship.

Wang Ying is from the north, and her family always has a supply of sauerkraut. When she came to help, she brought a large head of sauerkraut. She would slice some meat, add some glass noodles, and stew it with the sauerkraut. It was very appetizing.

Xu Xinning and Xu Mingyang returned first, and they could smell the aroma of sauerkraut stew with glass noodles from afar.

Xu Xinning smiled and said to Xu Mingyang, "Aunt Yingzi is cooking sauerkraut stew with vermicelli again. I've eaten a lot of Aunt Yingzi's sauerkraut stew with vermicelli since I was a child."

Xu Mingyang: "She treats you like her own daughter."

Xu Xinning: "That's right. Aunt Yingzi's family doesn't have any daughters, and I was raised by them. I spend more time with Aunt Yingzi than with my parents."

However, after Xu Xinning remembered her past life, she and Wang Ying were no longer as close as before.

Xu Xinning's previous life wasn't long; she was only sixteen years old and unmarried when the incident happened.

Although her previous life was short, she was, after all, the only princess, and with a transmigrated female empress as her mother, Xu Xinning's knowledge and experience were beyond what others could estimate.

With her broad knowledge and intelligence, she has a knack for judging people.

After she regained her memories of her past life, she felt for some reason that Wang Ying's kindness towards her was somewhat inexplicable. Because of this feeling, she intentionally distanced herself from Wang Ying.

Xu Mingyang suddenly asked with a smile, "Does Chen Ping's mother still peek over your wall every day?"

Xu Xinning laughed along, "Oh, this is Aunt Chen's fun. She likes to annoy my grandma. She's getting more and more like a child as she gets older."

Xu Mingyang: "It's all thanks to your grandma's good nature. If it were someone else, we would have been unable to be neighbors long ago."
