Chapter 53 State-Run Restaurants

Women all admire strength, and Xu Yaoyang was well aware of this.

Outside, Xu Yaoyang always calls Xu Yaozu "Big Brother," and most people assume they are biological brothers rather than cousins.

Xu Yaoyang only mentions his useful brothers; he won't even bother mentioning the useless ones. Xu Yaozu and Xu Mingyang are the best examples of this.

Xu Laosan finally realized what his sister's weapon was. He kept fiddling with the few small pebbles in his hand. They didn't seem to have any power at all, but in his sister's hands, they could unleash such great power.

If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, he would never have believed that his gentle and beautiful older sister had such strength.

Just like that, whoosh! You can hit anywhere you want. That's so cool.

Xu Laosan was immersed in his own world, gesturing with small pebbles.

In fact, Mu Jingheng also had a lot of questions he wanted to ask. He wanted to know how to master the stone-throwing skill.

Girls admire those who are strong, but boys are the same.

Mu Jingheng felt that he might like his Xin Ning sister even more now!

After spending the morning shopping and chasing thieves, all three of them were starving.

Mu Jingheng had plenty of money, so he took Xu Xinning and Xu Laosan to the state-run restaurant.

Xu Laosan felt that today was the most unforgettable day of his life. He had become a hero respected by everyone (actually, he called himself that; others probably hadn't even noticed him). Not only that, he also got to enter the state-run restaurant, which he usually didn't have the chance to go to.

Xu Laosan felt that today was his moment of glory. He would tell his underlings when he got back and let them be envious!

He bets no one will surpass him for the next few years.

Xu Xinning is someone who doesn't like to owe favors. Although Mu Jingheng lives in their house, she knows that he gives his grandmother living expenses and even brings his own food. Moreover, he is generous and often buys food for his family.

People are generous because they have a broad mind, but you can't take advantage of their generosity and take advantage of them excessively.

Xu Xinning could afford to eat at a state-run restaurant.

Strangely enough, Xu Xinning has never had a concept of money in either of her lives.

In her past life, because of her prominent status, she didn't need to worry about this issue at all; the people around her would arrange everything perfectly for her.

In this life, she has never been embarrassed because of her family's pampering.

For Xu Xinning herself, money and tickets are fine as long as she has just enough when she needs them.

Xu Xinning is a very simple person and is not particularly interested in material possessions.

Since it wasn't mealtime, there was no one else in the state-run restaurant except for a few waiters and chefs.

The blackboard also lists the morning menu: noodles, porridge, fried dough sticks, steamed buns, salted duck eggs, pickled vegetables, fried dough sticks, radish pancakes...

When the three people went in, the people inside were sitting together, some chatting, some drinking tea, and some knitting.

No wonder they work in a state-run restaurant; these people look much healthier and more rosy-cheeked than people outside.

When someone came in, everyone in the restaurant looked over, but no one came over to ask what the newcomer wanted.

But then again, what else can you do besides eat at a restaurant?

Xu Xinning pulled Xu Laosan to the small blackboard, looked at it, and then turned around and asked, "Comrade, if we want to eat now, can we only order what's on this blackboard?"

Good-looking people always have some pride, and even though these staff members felt it should be their break time, they still answered Xu Xinning's question.

"Everything except noodles is sold out."

Xu Xinning looked sincerely at the person who was probably the chef and asked, "Could you make us three bowls of pickled mustard greens and shredded pork noodles?"

The chef didn't want to move. In the state-run restaurant, he had the most power besides the director, and all the other staff had to be mindful of his feelings. But now, when he met Xu Xinning's gaze, he couldn't bring himself to refuse.

Seeing that the chefs didn't have any objections, the cashiers also started to move.

In those days, receipts were all handwritten, with blue carbon paper underneath.

Seeing that Xu Xinning and Xu Laosan had both ordered pickled mustard greens and shredded pork noodles, Mu Jingheng also ordered pickled mustard greens and shredded pork noodles (he had no other choice but to order something else). When he glanced at the window, he was surprised to see golden fried broad beans, so he ordered a serving of those as well.

The cashier prepared the receipt, and Mu Jingheng quickly handed over the money and the receipt.

Actually, he had already seen Xu Xinning's actions. How could he let a woman pay? Wouldn't that be a slap in the face for Mu Er? Especially since she was the girl he liked.

Xu Xinning was quick as well; when Mu Jingheng handed the money to the cashier, she handed it out as well.

The cashier looked at this and that, unsure of whose money or tickets to accept.

"Hey you two young comrades, are you together?"

Xu Laosan was the quickest to respond. As if afraid he wouldn't have anything to eat if he didn't say yes, he immediately replied, "Yes, yes, this is my sister and my brother."

The cashier laughed: "You three siblings are really polite, insisting on paying for your meal and even offering to pay the bill."

Mu Jingheng grinned cheekily, stuffed the money into the cashier's hand, and said, "I'm the older brother, it's only right that I pay for my younger siblings."

This was the first time Xu Xinning had encountered such a situation. She didn't know what to say, so she withdrew her hand to avoid trouble, thinking she would buy him a return gift later.

The cashier was stunned, having never seen anyone smile so beautifully before. She replied with a smile, "You're such a good older brother!"

The other waiters noticed that the three were young and unusually good-looking. Their clothes were mostly new except for the younger one, who had two patches on his knees. The patches on the younger one's knees were also sewn on rather carelessly. So they began to guess who they were.

"You must be educated youth sent to the countryside? Judging from your fair complexions, you must have been there not long ago."

"Why did your little brother have to go to the countryside with you? Your family is really willing to do that."

"Isn't it enough for only one person from each family to go to the countryside?"

"That's what they say, but if someone is highly enlightened, there won't be any restrictions."

"But I think age is still a factor to consider, since the work in the countryside is all physical labor."

...

The waiters started chatting amongst themselves, seemingly without needing anyone to answer, since they already knew the answer in their hearts.

Honestly, this pickled mustard green and shredded pork noodle soup is really delicious. The shredded pork is fried until crispy and crunchy, the pickled mustard greens are very fresh, and the noodles absorb the savory flavor of the soup. One slurp and you feel incredibly satisfied.

State-run restaurants in this era were definitely conscientious; this big bowl of noodles was truly substantial.

Although Xu Xinning's appetite has increased considerably over the years, she still couldn't finish such a large bowl, so she asked for an empty bowl and scooped out half of it.

The waiters' observation of Xu Xinning's actions sparked another round of discussion, focusing on the difference in appetite between city dwellers and rural people.
