Chapter 113 Private Talk between Father-in-Law and Son-in-Law

Xu Xinning was surprised; she had known Wang Ying for so long and never knew she was such a good swimmer.

"There are aquatic plants under the reservoir. When Jianguo fell in that day, his foot got tangled in the aquatic plants while he was struggling. Luckily, your aunt was a good swimmer and managed to save him."

"Actually, Jian Guo is a pretty good swimmer too. If he hadn't been entangled, he could have easily come up on his own," Grandma Chen added.

After being comforted by Old Mrs. Chen, Xu Xinning suddenly felt hopeful. Perhaps Wang Yingzhen was not dead. Didn't the villagers who went down to rescue her say that they didn't find any signs of being buried down there?

After so many days, Xu Yaozu finally returned home. He was unshaven, his hair was messy, his clothes were wrinkled and smelled of sweat, looking like a refugee fleeing famine.

Xu Xinning almost didn't recognize her father, but Mu Jingheng spotted him and said, "Uncle, you're back. What happened to you?"

Xu Yaozu: "I've been very busy lately. The coastline breached, several leaders went missing, and the salt fields were also flooded. Our Public Security Bureau also went to participate in the rescue work."

Mu Jingheng: "Have you found him?"

Xu Xinning: "Dad, my great-uncle's uncle has also gone missing. Has he been found?"

Xu Yaozu sighed and said, "They were found, but they had already sacrificed themselves."

Xu Xinning felt very disappointed. How could such a good person just be gone like that? Life is truly unpredictable!

"The county will hold a memorial service for the fallen comrades tomorrow. They will be buried in the martyrs' cemetery. In order to take care of the families of these comrades, their children will be able to take over their jobs and be assigned to relatively good positions," Xu Yaozu added.

My uncle's family has three children, but only one job. Who should it be given to? Perhaps the other two children would feel uncomfortable if it were given to one of them?

As far as Xu Xinning knew, her uncle's three children were not very capable.

The aunt spoils the children; these three grown men often don't work properly and wander around aimlessly.

Yang Chunqin usually takes good care of them out of respect for her uncle.

But now their biggest support is gone. In the village, since everyone is related, they will definitely continue to take care of them as always. But who will give them face after they go to work?

Zhao Ming may have heard that Xu Yaozu had returned home, so he took advantage of his free time to come and visit. However, Xu Xinning found that Xu Yaozu's attitude towards Zhao Ming was very strange. He was neither warm nor cold, and he only said superficial things.

Xu Xinning remembers that when they lived in the military compound, Xu Yaozu was very kind to the children in the compound, especially those who were close to their families.

Is there something unknown about this?

According to Xu Xinning, Zhao Ming's father and Xu Yaozu had no conflicts at work, so the only one who could change Xu Yaozu's attitude was his beloved daughter.

Xu Xinning had overheard rumors that Zhao Ming's hasty transfer to another unit was related to her accident, and judging from Xu Yaozu's attitude, it seemed to be true.

Xu Xinning found it ridiculous. What was her relationship with him? At most, they could only talk to each other. How did things get so far off?

No wonder Xu Yaozu was cold towards him.

Zhao Ming left after sitting for a short while, looking around as he went. Everyone knew he was looking for Xu Xinning, but Xu Xinning was reading in the study upstairs and didn't come down.

She could see what was happening downstairs clearly, but the people downstairs couldn't see her upstairs.

Mu Jingheng was arrogant; as soon as he arrived at Xujia Village, he moved into the Xu family's house, while this Zhao Ming didn't even get a meal. It was obvious who was closer and who was less close.

Xu Xinning found it amusing, wondering what this person was so smug about.

Xu Yaozu only found out that Xu Xinning and Mu Jingheng were dating during dinner. It was mainly because someone was so inconsiderate of the occasion, always feeding Xu Xinning, while the rest of the family didn't say anything. Only then did Xu Yaozu realize that something was wrong, and when he asked, he found out that the two were already dating.

Xu Yaozu was furious!

Did they ask for his opinion?

Well, actually his opinion isn't that important.

But they started dating before he even came back. Isn't that taking him too lightly? Besides, his daughter is only eighteen, still a child! How could she be dating him?

Seeing Xu Yaozu's sour face, Jiang Juecheng, Xu Mingyang, and Xu Laosan were excitedly waiting to see a good show. They thought it would be best if the father-in-law and son-in-law had a unique competition, so that they could see how good they were now.

Xu Xinning remained calm, eating and drinking as if it were none of her business.

Mu Jingheng panicked for a moment, but his thick skin, honed over decades, made him fearless. He even hooked Xu Xinning's finger under the table.

Xu Xinning tried to shake him off, but he hooked her again. She tried to shake him off, but he hooked her again. Xu Xinning felt that this guy was on the verge of exploding.

After exchanging glances with the two of them several times, Xu Yaozu finally put down his chopsticks heavily, then expressionlessly told Mu Jingheng to go to his study with him.

The gossip trio quickly followed, their gloating expressions impossible to conceal.

Xu Xinning: "I have some sunflower seeds here, do you want some?"

Xu Laosan: "Yes, yes, of course I want it."

Xu Xinning: "Three cents a pack."

Xu Laosan: "Sister, you're really ripping me off. Even movie theaters aren't that expensive."

Hsu Hsin-ning: "Take it or leave it."

Xu Laosan: "Yes, yes, three mao it is."

Xu Xinning: "Where are Brother Juecheng and Uncle?"

Jiang Juecheng: "Yes."

Xu Mingyang: "Yes."

Mu Jingheng never expected that his first time being called in by his father-in-law to be reprimanded would become Xu Xinning's best opportunity to make money.

However, if he found out, he might even create opportunities for his future wife to make money in order to please her.

The originally depressed Mr. and Mrs. Xu suddenly felt relieved upon seeing such a joyful side of their home, as the shock and anger they felt towards Xu Daya were suddenly dispelled.

From now on, let's pretend this granddaughter never existed!

Xu Yaozu called Mu Jingheng into the study, but instead of scolding him as Xu Laosan and the others had imagined, the two calmly discussed how to love Xu Xinning.

Three bystanders pressed their ears against the door, occasionally cracking open a sunflower seed, silently chanting, "Let's fight, let's fight, hurry up and let's fight!"

Later, the three even used sunflower seeds as a wager, betting that the two would start fighting in a few minutes.

Xu Xinning thought the bet was excellent because they ended up selling several more bags of sunflower seeds to her, though it did take up a lot of newspapers.

Apart from Xu Yaozu and Mu Jingheng, no one else knew what the two of them talked about in the study. When they came out, they both looked calm, which made Xu Xinning curious about what they had said.

Once Jiang Juecheng completes his mission, it means he will return to his unit.
