Qin Beiming originally planned to wait in the living room for a while so that he could leave the door open for Zhan Hanjue, since this was a golden opportunity to please his father-in-law.
Unexpectedly, in just five or six minutes, Ling Mofu, now dressed in pajamas, leaned against the railing at the top of the stairs on the second floor and instructed Qin Beiming:
"Don't touch the lock."
"You really won't let him in?"
"It's not a hotel, you can't just come and go as you please," Ling Mo said in a low voice, sitting down at the top of the stairs on the second floor.
Qin Beiming keenly sensed Ling Mo's slight mood, and without bothering to please Zhan Hanjue, he turned off the living room lights and went upstairs by himself.
He glanced at her kitten-like figure sitting at the top of the stairs, then sat down beside her, declaring confidently:
“Mo Mo, there is a fundamental difference between me and Zhan Hanjue. He has a home but doesn’t know how to go back, while I am different. I simply cannot bear to step out of my home.”
"..."
Ling Mo twitched her lips, thinking to herself that Qin Beiming was quite familiar with the place, calling it "home" so often. They had only been living here for a short time, but he already really considered this place his home.
Qin Beiming saw her silently twisting the hem of her clothes, not saying a word, but just quietly staying by her side.
Knowing she was still waiting for Zhan Hanjue, he felt a pang of unease. If she finally met him, all would be well; but if she didn't, how heartbroken would she be?
After sitting for another half hour without Zhan Hanjue returning, Qin Beiming couldn't help but speak up:
"Go back to your room and sleep. The earth's energy is strong; sitting for too long can easily lead to cold entering your body."
"good."
Ling Mo nodded, but suddenly buried his face in Qin Beiming's arms, muttering:
"Third Master, I'm a little sad."
"He's just been fooled; it won't be long before he finds out what really happened."
Qin Beiming gently stroked the back of her head. Seeing her so downcast, he felt heartbroken just looking at her.
He was worried about how to comfort her.
In that instant when he lowered his eyes, he realized that she had fallen asleep against his chest.
"MoMo?"
Qin Beiming realized that she had fallen into a deep sleep, and then gently carried her back to the bedroom.
...
The next day, just as dawn was breaking.
Ling Mo rubbed his sleepy eyes and had just gotten out of bed when he vaguely heard a rustling knocking sound outside the door.
Although somewhat reluctant to open the door, she still slipped on her slippers and jogged downstairs.
The moment the door opened, Zhan Hanjue was seen shivering in the cold wind, carrying a hot breakfast in his hands.
"Mr. Zhan..."
"Just woke up? I brought you breakfast. That Qin kid isn't up yet?"
"Um."
Ling Mo nodded, looking at Zhan Hanjue's lips, which were purple from the cold, and casually said:
Is it that cold today?
"The temperature is quite low. Remember to wear more layers when you go to class later."
The white tiger behind Zhan Hanjue suddenly interjected:
"The temperature is actually almost the same as yesterday. The reason why the master is so afraid of the cold is probably because he stood outside the door all night and caught a chill."
"All night..."
Ling Mo looked extremely guilty and said apologetically:
"It's my fault, I locked the door early last night."
"I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I'll definitely remember to come back earlier next time. In my opinion, this access control system is quite reasonable." Zhan Hanjue answered readily, completely forgetting how biting the wind was last night.
Seeing this, Baihu, who had been standing at the door with Zhan Hanjue all night, silently sighed in his heart, "What a cruel twist of fate."
He secretly thought to himself that if Xuan Wei hadn't appeared halfway through, Zhan Hanjue and Ling Mo, who were very similar in appearance and personality, would have been better than biological father and daughter, even if they weren't.
"It's windy outside, come in first."
Ling Mo accepted the breakfast handed to him by Zhan Hanjue, and slightly turned his body to make way for Zhan Hanjue and Bai Hu.
Zhan Hanjue nodded slightly, then suddenly straightened his expression and said with particular seriousness:
"Girl, to be honest, I'm really confused right now. The paternity test results are right in front of me, and I've had them verified repeatedly, but the results are all surprisingly consistent. Even so, I still feel more connected to you."
"actually..."
Seeing Zhan Hanjue's unusually conflicted expression, Ling Mo originally intended to tell him the truth.
He caught a glimpse of a photographer lurking suspiciously outside the villa not far away. To avoid alerting them, he had no choice but to purse his lips tightly.
Zhan Hanjue sighed heavily, composed himself, and then gave her a kind smile again:
"You've loved Aying for so many years, and you've done so much to avenge her. If Aying knew, she would definitely treat you as our own daughter. Momo, thank you for loving her so much."
Ling Mo was surprised by Zhan Hanjue's words, and the pent-up emotions from last night vanished instantly.
However, fearing that someone might have planted a listening device on Zhan Hanjue, Ling Mo did not reveal the whole truth, but only spoke cautiously in a low voice:
"Mr. Zhan, one must always be wary of others and be careful in everything."
"good."
Zhan Hanjue nodded, then asked again:
"Would you be free tomorrow to come back to the Zhan family's old residence with me? If you don't mind, I can take you in as my goddaughter."
"I'm too busy with my studies to go."
Ling Mo shook her head and quickly rejected his suggestion.
Rumors about her and Zhan Hanjue were already circulating online. If news were to spread that Zhan Hanjue had taken her in as his goddaughter, the professional trolls on the internet would undoubtedly smear them even more.
