"Cousin, you can see that Huan'er isn't in a good mood. Why don't you do us a good job as a host and take us out for a walk?"
"Mo Mo, it's not that your aunt is criticizing you, but think about it yourself, isn't that right? Zhan Hanjue, who was having a private conversation with Qin Beiming in his study, heard the commotion outside and, disregarding all decorum, directly confronted Shi Xing.
Before he finished speaking, he pulled Ling Mo into his arms, his voice icy as he looked at the large family with their contrasting expressions, and said in a deep voice:
“I’m not unaware of how much hardship Momo suffered in the countryside. I just didn’t want to dwell on it for Aying’s sake. However, not wanting to dwell on it doesn’t mean I will condone such behavior. In the future, if anyone dares to cause my daughter the slightest grievance, I will hold them accountable to the end. Furthermore, Momo clearly lived with her maternal grandmother during those seven years in the countryside. It was her maternal grandmother who took good care of Momo, not her brother-in-law and sister-in-law.”
Zhan Hanjue was reluctant to speak so plainly; the blame lay with Shi Xing and Zhu Yanyan for their inappropriate actions.
Shi Huan glanced displeasedly at Shi Xing and Zhu Yanyan, who were speaking without thinking. Left with no other option, she put on a pitiful act to smooth things over.
"Uncle, please calm down. It's all my fault. My brother only asked my cousin to take us out for a walk because I was in a bad mood."
Shi Xing and Zhu Yanyan were completely taken aback by Zhan Hanjue's tough attitude and were so intimidated that they didn't dare to utter a single word.
After a long while, Zhu Yanyan finally mustered up the courage to walk up to Zhan Hanjue and tearfully tried to explain herself:
“Brother-in-law, you’ve really wronged us. I’ve always treated Momo like my own daughter and never mistreated her in the slightest. I only said those things because I was hurt by Momo’s cold attitude just now.”
Seeing this, Shi Xing simply squeezed to Ling Mo's side, gently grasped her hand, and said with a fawning expression:
"Mo Mo, you should talk to your dad. For the past seven years, your uncle has treated you like his own daughter. Don't break his heart."
Ling Mo disgustedly shook off Shi Xing's hand and said indifferently:
"Everyone, calm down for a bit. I'll change my clothes, and then I'll take my cousin and sister out for a good stroll."
She had originally intended to spend more time talking with Liu Guifen at home, but after Zhan Hanjue's remarks, the atmosphere became noticeably awkward.
To prevent Shi Xing and Zhu Yanyan from spreading rumors about Zhan Hanjue's character in front of the media, Ling Mo had no choice but to keep quiet and accompany Shi Yi and Shi Huan out for a stroll.
"Does my cousin-in-law want to come along?"
Shi Huan raised her watery eyes and gazed at Qin Beiming with longing, hoping that he would feel some pity for her.
"I'll have Baihu drive you. As for Beiming, I have important matters to discuss with him."
Zhan Hanjue's expression softened slightly, and he and Qin Beiming entered the study together.
