Chapter 76 Mom, this is my deskmate
Three days later.
The sun was blazing overhead.
The cicadas stretched out their calls from the branches outside the window.
The ceiling fan creaked as Yu Qing sat cross-legged on the floor, clutching her study materials, and looked at Lu Chi sitting by the window in surprise: "Are you really going to accompany me to repeat the year?"
"Hmm." Lu Chi lowered his head, holding a red pen in his hand, and corrected the test paper he had just completed.
"But there's no room for improvement in your grades."
Lu Chi thought for two seconds, then crossed out a true/false question: "My essays are not good."
He could have gotten a perfect score on the college entrance exam, but he lost five points because his essay lacked emotion.
Yu Qing sighed: "Actually, you don't need to come with me. The college entrance exam is my own business. I'm already very grateful to you for helping me with my studies. It would be very unfair to you to waste another year of your time."
"But... I'm afraid you won't pass the exam."
Yu Qing's face darkened: "Don't worry, I won't fail the exam. You just need to wait for me at the Normal University. I'm only a little bad at math. The other subjects are just a matter of time for me."
With Lu Chi's one-on-one tutoring, Yu Qing was quite confident about getting into the Normal University. This failure was entirely due to the short timeframe. If he had another semester, he would definitely have been able to get in.
Lu Chi finally finished marking all the marks on the test paper, and then checked it again: "You did pass this time, which is an improvement of five points compared to last time."
"That's because Teacher Lu taught so well," Yu Qing said sincerely.
Lu Chi snapped the pen cap back on with a "click," then casually pulled out his own test papers from his bag and handed them to Yu Qing: "There are two more sets of papers. I'll help you finish them today."
"No, Teacher Lu!" Yu Qing was on the verge of tears. He had been working since morning and was almost exhausted, but Lu Chi wouldn't let him rest and kept a close eye on him.
"True academic geniuses are all forged through the 'sea of questions' approach," Lu Chi stammered.
Yu Qing sighed helplessly, "Okay, I understand."
Ordinary people can become top students through hard work, but academic geniuses are born that way.
A genius is one who wins every battle, but a hero is one who triumphs against all odds and ridicule. Geniuses are not replicable and cannot be learned by ordinary people. But we must be clear that making a mistake on a problem does not mean failure; it is simply another side of success.
Yu Qing made himself a bowl of chicken soup, carefully took the exam paper, took a deep breath, and began to write furiously.
Just then, the sound of a key turning could be heard outside the door.
Li Qiulan returned, carrying large and small bags of things.
She was slightly taken aback when she saw a stranger in the room.
Lu Chi tensed up instantly and quickly stood up to politely say, "Hello, Auntie."
Yu Qing immediately stood up and explained, "Mom, this is my deskmate, Lu Chi. He's been helping me review these past two days."
"Oh, is that so? That's a good thing. Did Mom disturb you?" Li Qiulan was overjoyed to see that her son was actually studying on his own initiative.
"No, not at all." Yu Qing glanced at Lu Chi, then quietly came to Li Qiulan's side and whispered, "He is the top scorer in the province's college entrance examination this year. I had a hard time getting him to come to my house."
"Really?" Li Qiulan's eyes lit up immediately upon hearing this: "Then Mom will cook some of my best dishes and invite your classmates to stay for dinner later."
"Thank you, Mom."
Li Qiulan turned to look at Lu Chi and saw him sitting there blankly, not knowing what to do with his hands and feet.
The more I look at it, the more satisfied I become.
She had seen those top scorers in the college entrance examination on TV, and they looked exactly like the classmate in front of her. They were not good at speaking and looked a bit dull, but they were actually very smart.
Yu Qing used to hang out with a bunch of bad friends who were always causing trouble, which worried her terribly. Now her son is finally doing well.
Lu Chi felt a little uncomfortable looking into Li Qiulan's eager eyes.
Yu Qing nudged Lu Chi with her elbow: "Don't be nervous. My mom is just like this. She's never seen such a good student as you before, so she's being extra enthusiastic towards you. Don't take it to heart."
"Mm." Lu Chi nodded gently.
Soon, Li Qiulan was busy in the kitchen.
In less than half an hour, the fragrance filled the living room through the cracks in the door.
Li Qiulan hummed a little tune as she flipped the spatula in the pot, feeling quite pleased with herself.
Soon, a sumptuous meal was served.
Li Qiulan brought out the bowls and chopsticks and called to Lu Chi, "Little Lu, come and try Auntie's cooking!"
“Yes, yes, my mom’s cooking is amazing.” Yu Qing chimed in.
Lu Chi sat somewhat awkwardly at the dining table, his eyes scanning the delicious-looking dishes, and he swallowed hard.
"Come on, Xiao Lu, try the chicken leg Auntie made." Li Qiulan picked up a chicken leg and put it in Lu Chi's bowl.
Lu Chi didn't dare to be negligent and immediately took the bowl, saying, "Thank you... thank you, Auntie."
"Mom, I want to eat braised pig's trotters."
"Get it yourself." Li Qiulan rolled her eyes at him.
Yu Qing remained silent.
As soon as the dishes were served, Li Qiulan's chopsticks never stopped. She piled the glistening braised pork trotters, the golden and crispy lotus root, and the steamed egg custard with scallions into Lu Chi's bowl.
Lu Chi held the bowl, having just finished chewing, when new food was immediately added to it. He could only nod vaguely, "Thank you, Auntie..."
Yu Qing coughed twice on purpose: "Mom, I'm your real son, aren't I?"
Li Qiulan ignored him and picked up another piece of fish for Lu Chi: "I picked you up from the trash can when you were a child."
After saying that, she looked at Lu Chi with a smile and said, "Little Lu, if I could have a son like you, I would be laughing in my dreams."
Yu Qing sighed and rubbed his forehead, picking at the few green vegetables in his bowl with his chopsticks.
Seeing this, Lu Chi quietly put the largest piece of chicken leg from the bowl back onto Yu Qing's plate and whispered, "You eat it."
Yu Qing felt a warmth in her heart.
My deskmate is still the best!
He kept his head down, showing off his food.
Watching the interaction between the two of them, Li Qiulan grew to like Lu Chi even more.
The meal ended quickly. Li Qiulan cut a plate of fruit for Lu Chi, then sat down next to him and asked about his family situation. Yu Qing was quietly washing dishes in the kitchen.
When Li Qiulan learned that Lu Chi only had his grandmother, who depended on him for survival, she felt extremely sorry for him and immediately urged Yu Qing to pack a meal for the old woman to take home. In fact, Yu Qing did not have a good impression of his grandmother, but she was an elder after all, and she was Lu Chi's only relative.
Yu Qing had no choice but to reluctantly pack the food into the insulated container.
Because his grandmother was still at home, Lu Chi left in a bit of a hurry.
After cleaning up the mess, Yu Qing turned on his computer and started browsing various online forums.
I was busy until midnight.
Yu Qing was lying in bed.
He now has some savings and is thinking about whether to buy Lu Chi a cell phone so that it will be easier to contact him in the future, otherwise it will be too troublesome for the two of them to run around.
Moreover, when he went to university, almost everyone in the dormitory had a computer.
Not to mention mobile phones.
He knew Lu Chi's personality; he had developed a frugal habit since childhood. If he gave Lu Chi a cell phone, Lu Chi would definitely not accept it. However, since Lu Chi had helped him with his studies, he felt bad if he didn't give him something in return.
"Never mind, I'll go to the phone store tomorrow and take a look. I'll act first and ask questions later."
