Chapter 35 Guess Why I'm Not Laughing
The night was as dark as ink.
Moonlight streamed through the curtains and onto the floor.
Yu Qing sat at her desk, studying the notes in her notebook.
Suddenly, he vaguely heard a strange sound coming from the kitchen, like someone chopping meat.
"Mom should be asleep by now."
Yu Qing was somewhat puzzled. He stood up and walked heavily toward the kitchen.
The kitchen door was slightly ajar, and a suffocatingly eerie atmosphere filled the space. Dim yellow light shone through the cracks, casting an eerie shadow.
Yu Qing held her breath and slowly pushed open the door.
The sight before him made his blood freeze instantly.
Lu Chi stood there, holding a blood-stained cleaver, frantically hacking at a chef's head.
Blood splattered everywhere, and bits of flesh flew about.
The chef's head was hacked to pieces, and his two eyeballs rolled to the ground, staring straight at Yu Qing.
Yu Qing opened his mouth wide and screamed, but the sound caught in his throat. He wanted to escape, but found himself unable to move. Those eyes seemed to have a magical power, pinning him firmly to the spot.
Just then, Lu Chi slowly turned his head, a strange smile on his face, but his eyes were icy cold and devoid of any smile.
Yu Qing's heart clenched, and he finally couldn't help but scream, waking up from his dream.
He sat up abruptly, his back soaked with cold sweat.
Outside the window, the sky was already beginning to lighten.
"Ring ring ring..."
The alarm clock rang at that very moment.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead, still shaken.
Then, feeling utterly exhausted, I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling for a while without moving, before slowly lifting the covers and getting out of bed.
The morning breeze carried a slight chill.
Yu Qing went downstairs with dark circles under her eyes.
As soon as I reached the entrance of the residential area, I saw Li Fei squatting by the roadside, holding a steaming cup of soy milk in one hand and a cigarette in his mouth in the other.
He looked up and saw Yu Qing walking straight ahead with his head down. He immediately stubbed out his cigarette, dusted off the ash on his pants, and chased after him with his soy milk, calling out, "Brother Qing, Brother Qing..."
He shouted it several times in a row.
Yu Qingcai finally realized what was happening.
He stopped and turned around, seeing Li Fei standing behind him with a cup of soy milk. He took the cup from Li Fei, took a sip, and handed the empty cup back to him, saying, "Thanks!"
Li Fei didn't reach out to take it; he just stared at him in shock.
Yu Qing felt a sense of bewilderment.
He always felt that Li Fei's gaze was very impolite.
I remember when he was a kid, he would compete with other kids and blurt out, "My brother dares to eat poop," and the other kids would give him similar looks.
"Qing... Brother Qing... that was the cup I used to shake off cigarette ash..." Li Fei stammered.
"..."
Yu Qing's forehead was covered in black lines. He bent over and dry heaved for a moment, then cursed loudly, "Damn it, why didn't you say so earlier?"
"I want to say, you didn't give me a chance either," Li Fei said innocently.
He seemed to notice that something was wrong with Yu Qing, frowned, and asked with concern, "What's wrong with you today? I called you several times just now and you didn't respond."
"It's nothing, I just didn't sleep well last night." Yu Qing shook her head, her voice a little hoarse.
"I heard you went to celebrate Lin Yueyue's birthday last night?"
"Hmm," Yu Qing replied calmly.
"I also heard that someone jumped off a building at Lin Yueyue's birthday party and almost hit someone. Tell me, is it true?" Li Fei asked impatiently.
Yu Qing looked at him in surprise.
Unexpectedly, the news spread so quickly that it reached Li Fei's ears in just one night.
Li Fei gloated: "I wonder which unlucky guy almost got hit. It's hilarious."
Li Fei was laughing when he saw Yu Qing's expression of utter disgust.
"Brother Qing, why aren't you smiling?"
"Guess why I'm not smiling?" Yu Qing looked at him with a half-smile, making Li Fei feel uneasy.
Li Fei seemed to realize something, his expression stiffened, and he chuckled awkwardly, "That unlucky guy wouldn't happen to be you, would he?"
"What do you think?" Yu Qing smiled even more broadly.
"..."
Li Fei suddenly stopped laughing.
...
At the school gate.
A black Mercedes was parked right on the side of the road.
The car door opened.
Lin Yueyue got out of the car.
She was wearing a blue and white school uniform with the zipper zipped up high, paired with light makeup and short hair, giving off the feeling of a high and mighty white swan.
He seemed to notice Yu Qing and Li Fei by the roadside, and Yu Qing also noticed her, but neither of them greeted her.
Just then, they heard the driver's voice from behind.
"Miss, your schoolbag."
"Thank you, Uncle Chen!"
Lin Yueyue then realized what was happening, turned around to take her schoolbag, and walked towards the school gate with her head down.
He looked preoccupied.
Yu Qing looked at Lin Yueyue in surprise.
If it were any other time, given the scene just now, even if Yu Qing hadn't provoked her, she would have glared at him fiercely.
Then he left gracefully.
However, today's Lin Yueyue...
It seems a bit strange.
"It seems that yesterday's murder has really left a shadow on her."
Yu Qing shook his head and sighed.
What should have been a birthday party turned into this mess.
Who wouldn't be upset if they encountered this?
...
Inside the classroom.
The students were discussing yesterday's suicide incident with great enthusiasm, with most of the discussion revolving around Yu Qing and Zhou Xiaoming.
After all, the two were the first eyewitnesses to the body.
Ignoring the gossip around him, Yu Qing calmly walked into the classroom, found his seat, and plopped down.
Lu Chi was eating a steamed bun in small bites beside him.
After seeing Yu Qing sit down, he stopped what he was doing, looked up at him, and said softly, "Good morning."
"Um."
Yu Qing responded.
Then he took his textbook out of his schoolbag and put it on his desk.
While flipping through the book, something accidentally fell out.
A birthday card.
Yu Qing looked slightly dazed.
He picked up the small card, his fingers gently tracing the edge of the birthday card. The neat and elegant handwriting stirred a hint of doubt in his mind.
Who will send him a birthday card?
Who would remember his birthday?
His gaze inadvertently swept over Lu Chi beside him, who was looking down, intently munching on a steamed bun.
Lu Chi seemed to notice Yu Qing's gaze, paused for a moment, and then handed her another steamed bun: "Want some?"
Looking at the steamed buns in front of him, Yu Qing was reminded of the scene of the dismembered body in his dream last night.
I suddenly felt nauseous.
Yu Qing subconsciously hid the greeting card behind her book, a slightly unnatural smile on her face, her attitude indifferent: "No need."
Lu Chi keenly noticed Yu Qing's disgusted expression, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes. But when he saw his own greasy hands, he immediately realized something, quickly pulled his hand back from mid-air, and wiped his fingers with a tissue.
A self-reproachful apology: "I'm...I'm sorry, I forgot you have mysophobia."
Yu Qing opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but he seemed to think there was no need to explain. He silently put the card away and continued reading.
Seeing that he did not respond, Lu Chi lowered his head and continued eating his steamed bun.
A subtle silence hung between them.
