"Congratulations, sir, it is a young master."
Fang Qing couldn't hear what they were saying clearly; she felt like she had survived a disaster.
She wasn't very lucid.
There were people moving around in the room. Fang Qing had just come to her senses after being washed and moved to another bed.
Zhao Shi'an sat on the edge of the bed and held her hand.
Fang Qing tried to speak, but found her voice was hoarse.
"Thanks for your hard work."
Zhao Shi'an bent down and kissed her forehead.
Fang Qing saw that his eyes were red and that tears fell onto her face as he stood up.
Fang Qing didn't even have the strength to raise her hand, so she squeezed his palm.
"I didn't cry, so why are you crying?"
Zhao Shi'an couldn't hold back any longer. He buried his face in Fang Qing's hands, and tears streamed down his face.
"I was terrified."
No one understands his torment.
He knew he wasn't favored by God, so he had prepared for the worst and was determined to go with it.
Thankfully, everything is alright.
Fang Qing was amused by him.
"You'd be a laughing stock if people saw you like this."
"Let them laugh all they want. Can't I even pamper my wife?"
He wiped away his tears and said, "Would you like to see the child?"
Fang Qing looked at the small bed next to her, which was surrounded by midwives and wet nurses.
The child cried for a while, but is quiet now.
"Is it a daughter?"
"son."
Fang Qing was stunned for a moment.
"Oh, I thought it was a daughter."
"What can we do now that the baby is already born? Should we give it to someone else?"
Fang Qing pinched his thigh.
"You're talking nonsense. If the child hears this, they won't be close to you anymore."
Zhao Shi'an dismissed everyone in the room, carried the child to the bedside, and Fang Qing leaned forward.
She was startled the moment she saw the child.
"Huh? How can it be so ugly?"
The only newborn she ever saw was Doumiao when she was a baby.
But pea shoots weren't this ugly when they were little.
It was a bright red, wrinkled mess, looking just like a monkey.
“The child heard it,” Zhao Shi’an said.
Fang Qing made a gesture of covering her mouth.
"But it's so red, is it lacking oxygen?"
She was a little worried about the child's condition.
"The midwife just said that all babies are like this. The redder the baby is when they are born, the whiter they will become as they grow up. Your mother said that you were like this when you were born."
"is that so?"
Fang Qing touched the little thing.
Carefully, with a soft touch.
"It's really amazing, I actually gave birth to a person."
Zhao Shi'an was amused by her.
"Yes, my wife is really amazing."
Fang Qing tried to sit up, but the painkiller wore off and she felt pain.
A burning sense of existential unease.
She gasped, feeling unwell.
"pain?"
Fang Qing nodded.
"Lie still and don't move. I'll apply the medicine for you in a bit."
Zhao Shi'an took the child outside and came back with hot water.
After taking the medicine, Qing felt better and then fell asleep.
The main house they lived in was a combination of four rooms. They slept in the two rooms on the west side, while the easternmost room, which was originally set aside for Fang Qing to look at the account books, had been converted into a nursery where the wet nurse took care of the baby.
Zhao Shi'an said he would take care of the child after it was born, and he has always lived up to that promise.
Fang Qing, however, had no worries. She was never woken up at night during her entire postpartum period, and after the 45-day postpartum period, she was full of energy.
Afraid of disturbing Fang Qing's rest, Zhao Shi'an didn't even hold a full-moon celebration, only inviting a few familiar people to his home for a meal.
Zhao Shi'an only allowed people to visit Fang Qing after she had finished her postpartum confinement.
Gifts of all sizes were delivered to the Zhao residence, and Fang Qing had the steward write them all down on a list. The palace also sent rewards. Even without a full-month celebration, the news of Zhao Shi'an's birth of a son spread throughout the capital.
