Dashan had been drooling over the smell of the marinade being prepared, and now his mouth was stuffed full, as if he wanted to eat it all in one bite.
"This is so delicious! I've never eaten anything this good before."
Dashan wanted to eat more, but Yingzi quickly grabbed his hand.
"This expensive stuff isn't for you to eat, don't eat it."
Da Shan withdrew his hand, embarrassed.
"Mom, let's sell this from now on, it's so delicious."
Yingzi felt a surge of emotions.
"Auntie, what do you think?"
“Okay, very good. When we were selling potato chips in the county town, there was a roast chicken vendor across the street. I think yours tastes much better than his.”
"We still need to discuss it with the old man, since we might not make money at first."
“These days, it’s not easy to do any business. Who can make money right away? Anyway, I trust you.”
"Okay, then let's try selling it at the village entrance tomorrow."
And so it was settled. The next morning, Yingzi brought two prepared chickens over, and then she and Zhao went to set up their stall.
Fang Qing went to the private school with Zhao Shi'an early in the morning.
She was worried that business would be slow on the first day, so she rushed out as soon as school was over at noon.
But Zhao Shi and Yingzi were nowhere to be seen at the village entrance.
Seeing this, Fang Qing knew that today's harvest should be quite substantial.
As soon as I entered the alley after returning home, I heard laughter coming from the bamboo grove.
It turned out that Zhao and Yingzi were killing a chicken.
"Mother, Aunt, how was your day?"
Upon seeing Fang Qingyingzi, her smile widened, as if she had seen a living god of wealth.
"Sold out! I was worried at first, but it wasn't enough to meet demand. The village chief alone bought two jin."
"Everyone is willing to spend ten coins a pound. You could say that everyone in our village is rich now."
"It has to be bean sprouts. If it weren't for your corn seeds, how could our villagers ever live such a comfortable life?"
“Sister-in-law, you are so lucky to have given birth to such a wonderful child as Douya. Looking at my Dashan, I wish I could put him back in my belly and give birth to him all over again.”
You could tell Yingzi was genuinely excited; she kept praising the bean sprouts.
"If we can make money, then the next step is to encourage villagers to raise chickens. As long as they bring their chickens here to sell, we will buy them at nine coins per pound."
Yingzi was stunned after Fang Qing finished speaking.
"Nine coins? Isn't that too much? We only sell it for ten coins. At this price, we won't make any profit."
"Don't worry, ma'am. This is just the beginning. We're just trying to get everyone's enthusiasm for raising chickens. Once everyone raises more and has no other sales channels, they'll have to sell to us. That will naturally bring the price down."
Yingzi thought about it and realized that made sense.
However, Zhao hesitated somewhat.
"But wouldn't that be deceiving the villagers?"
"Mother, you can't say that. In the past, every household didn't have enough food, and raising a chicken was not easy, so the price was high. But now everyone can eat their fill, so the cost of raising chickens has naturally decreased."
Thinking about it that way, it makes sense.
Fang Qing bought chickens that day at nine coins per pound, and many people delivered chickens to her that evening.
Even if they were delivered to the county town, they might not be able to sell it for that price, so they were naturally happy to sell it to Fang Qing.
That evening, Fang Qing received more than a dozen chickens.
Fang Qing didn't know how Yingzi had persuaded Fang Zhengyi, but he also came over that evening to help process the chicken.
Taking advantage of this time, Fang Qing discussed the distribution of profits with them.
In the first year, due to difficulties, Fang Qing only provided the cost of the seasonings. After that, she provided the seasonings, while Yingzi and the others provided the labor, and the profits were split equally between the two families.
Yingzi naturally had no objection to this arrangement, and Fang Zhengyi, having received Yingzi's warning, dared not object either.
Two days later, many more chickens were suddenly being raised by villagers.
When the weather started to cool down, Fang Qing's chili peppers were ripe, and she hired people to come and harvest them for her family.
At first, everyone thought it was something rare that Fang Qing had grown. It was bright red and looked quite appealing, so some people couldn't resist trying it.
One bite and your face will turn the same color as the chili pepper.
"Pah, pah, pah! What kind of thing are you planting, bean sprouts? Why are you planting this instead of growing crops on perfectly good land? Can you even eat this?"
In their village, the most common seasonings for cooking are ginger and dogwood, but neither of these can compare to the spiciness of this red berry.
"These are chili peppers, used for seasoning."
Once Fang Qing explained it this way, everyone understood.
"It's the fried chicken gizzards sold by Da Shan's family, the one with the spicy and numbing topping, right?"
"These are indeed good, but you've planted so many bean sprouts, when will you ever be able to finish them all?"
"You don't need to worry about it. The Da Shan family is in business, isn't it?"
Everyone chatted and laughed while working.
Today was a school day off, and Fang Qing was busy in the field. She had just found a heart-shaped chili pepper and was sharing it with Zhao Shi'an when Fang Daniu's shout came from the other side of the field.
She looked up and saw a familiar figure standing next to Fang Daniu.
She was dressed as a woman.
It was Zhou Ning.
Fang Qing quickly ran over.
The workers couldn't help but look over there.
"Oh my, Eryou's house is really different from before."
“She is a young lady of the Zhou family, so naturally she is different from us.”
"You tell me how stupid Er is, not cherishing Miss Zhou, but choosing that other one instead."
"Keep your voice down, isn't Eryou's mother over there?"
This job pays fifty coins a day. It's easy now, so everyone's eager to do it, including Wang Cuihua.
