Chapter 626 Shen Guannian Falls Ill
Wei Dazhang had no mind to listen to her rambling at the moment. The woman's hand was wrapped around his chest, and her perfumed scent was filling his nostrils. He couldn't resist and gave her a few perfunctory replies before pinning Qi Shi down.
Granny Yin immediately jumped off the carriage, blew out the lantern, and then walked away.
The coachman, unfazed, went to a corner of the alley to smoke.
After a long while, the commotion inside the carriage finally stopped.
Then Granny Yin stepped forward and said, "Madam, we've been out for a while now, it's time to go back."
If we stay out too long, and Shen Guannian discovers that the Qi family isn't home, that would be terrible!
Madam Qi hummed in agreement, not forgetting to instruct Wei Dazhang: "Go back and take a good look at that portrait, and be careful not to mistake the person for someone else."
"knew."
Wei Dazhang casually agreed and got off the carriage, his clothes disheveled.
A quarter of an hour later, Madam Qi returned to the Shen residence.
She changed her clothes and took Granny Yin to Shen Guannian's courtyard.
When she first married into the family, she lived in the same courtyard as Shen Guannian. However, as Shen Guannian took one concubine after another, she had no choice but to compromise and move to another courtyard.
Pushing open the courtyard gate and entering the house, she saw that Shen Guannian was still asleep, so she whispered to Granny Yin, "Light the incense for him."
Granny Yin hesitated, "Madam, we already ordered before we left. Wouldn't ordering more be too much?"
Madam Qi said displeasedly, "Just order what I tell you to order. Why are you asking so many questions?"
Granny Yin dared not say anything more and immediately lit another incense stick.
Qi nodded in satisfaction as he watched the smoke curling around him, then turned and left.
The next day, Shen Guannian fell ill.
He woke up in the early morning with a terrible headache, vomiting and diarrhea, and immediately called a doctor to come and see him.
The doctor took Shen Guannian's pulse, wrote a prescription, and Sanshui went to get the medicine, then came back, decocted it, and fed it to him.
Unfortunately, it was of no use at all. Shen Guannian still had a headache and felt nauseous. In fact, his condition was worse than before he took the medicine, and he developed a high fever.
Madam Qi paced anxiously to the side, wiping away her tears as she said, "What's wrong, sir? You were perfectly fine before, how could you suddenly fall ill? Did you eat something you shouldn't have yesterday? Or perhaps you're being haunted by some evil spirit? Sir, please don't scare me!"
Shen Guannian felt his head was about to split open, but Qi Shi was still crying and nagging on and on.
He was incredibly annoyed and, forcing back his headache, said, "Get out! You're so annoying!"
Madam Qi refused to leave: "Master, you're so sick, how can I leave you alone? I'll definitely stay by your side until you get better! By the way, this doctor isn't good enough, should we find another one?"
"Shut up and get out!"
“Sir, you can’t avoid seeking medical help. Why don’t you get up and drink another bowl of medicine? Perhaps you’ve already vomited up what you just drank, which is why it’s not working.”
As she spoke, Madam Qi was about to help Shen Guannian up to drink his medicine.
Shen Guannian was already feeling extremely nauseous, and as soon as Qi Shi touched him, he immediately vomited.
The dark, murky medicine sprayed all over Qi Shi.
Madam Qi froze instantly, her face turning ashen.
Granny Yin exclaimed in surprise, "Madam, your clothes! This... this... perhaps Madam should go back and change into a clean set of clothes first!"
Madam Qi stood up and walked out with a stiff face.
As soon as the door opened, Shen Wantang and Shen Mingxuan were standing outside.
Shen Mingxuan's face was full of anxiety and worry: "Mother, I heard that Father was sick, so I came to visit him. How is Father now? Is he feeling any better?"
Shen Wantang glanced deeply at Madam Qi, who was covered in medicine, and said calmly, "I also heard that Father was ill, so I came here specifically to treat him."
Madam Qi sneered and said sarcastically, "Oh dear, Tang'er is really too filial. She has only read a few medical books and dares to practice medicine. Those who know her will say that she is filial, but those who don't will think that she is trying to murder her own father! Our Xuan'er is honest and upright, and she doesn't know any of your high-sounding tricks."
Shen Mingxuan hated Shen Wantang so much for selling the painting that she was seething with hatred. She immediately said sarcastically, "Sister, at a time like this, don't make things worse. Father's illness is no small matter, so stop pretending!"
"With your limited skills, it's one thing to fool outsiders, but to fool our father? Do you have any humanity? Do you have any conscience? Our father is our closest relative. You can't just prescribe medicine for him randomly. Otherwise, if something happens to him, can you bear the responsibility?"
"Go back to your yard, stop causing trouble here, you're quite annoying!"
"Oh, by the way, I heard you sold the painting for a full thousand taels of silver. You're really shameless! That was my maid, and you actually had the nerve to sell it for money! I've never seen such a greedy person as you!"
Shen Wantang looked at her indifferently: "Father is too sick to get out of bed, yet you're here worrying about a maid, and about how much money I sold. Now you're blocking the way, not letting me in to see Father. I knew you were unfilial, but I never imagined you were this unfilial! I truly feel heartbroken for Father. Is you really Father's biological daughter? Could you have been adopted? You might not even have the surname Shen, right?"
Shen Wantang's words were much more aggressive than Shen Mingxuan's, and with the two serious accusations of being unfilial and not bearing the surname Shen, Shen Mingxuan was unable to withstand them.
She nearly jumped up, screaming and cursing, "Shen Wantang, you're the most despicable person I've ever met! You don't even have the surname Shen, you're not his biological daughter, I look way more like our father than you!! You look exactly like your vixen aunt, you're a vixen too!"
Shen Mingxuan was so angry that she was almost incoherent, cursing whatever came to mind.
She cursed for a while, and Shen Guannian, who was inside the room, finally couldn't bear it any longer. He covered his head, which was throbbing with pain, and endured the nausea as he was helped out by a servant.
"What's all the noise about?!"
Shen Guannian sternly rebuked Shen Mingxuan: "Do you think I'm dying too slowly? You're cursing me first thing in the morning!"
Shen Mingxuan's face stiffened: "Father, I didn't! It's all because of my sister. She doesn't want you to be well. I was just disciplining her on your behalf."
Shen Guannian was about to speak when he felt nauseous and vomited again.
He didn't eat anything this morning, only drank a bowl of medicine. Now there's nothing to vomit, just sour water with a bitter medicinal taste.
He was in so much pain that he couldn't support himself at all, and even with the help of a servant, he still collapsed to the ground.
Qi exclaimed in alarm and immediately rushed forward: "Master!"
Shen Mingxuan rushed over too: "Father!"
Shen Wantang stood behind them, watching them put on an act, and suddenly pushed them both down.
Then, she stood in front of Shen Guannian, raised his wrist, and took his pulse.
