Chapter 9 A Firm Handling of Granny Jin
Back in the Shen family, this Granny Jin liked to boss Shen Wantang around, and she continued to do so after arriving at the Prince's Mansion.
In her previous life, the dowry nanny that Madam Qi gave to Shen Wantang was not Granny Jin, because she had only married a poor scholar. Therefore, the maids and nannies that Madam Qi gave her were all of a lower rank.
Now that she has married into the royal family, Madam Qi is afraid that ordinary nannies will not be able to control her, so she specially sent one of her confidantes, Granny Jin.
As expected, Granny Jin started stirring up trouble on the very first night of the wedding.
In her previous life, Shen Mingxuan cried all night because she had to marry a rooster. No one could persuade her otherwise. As a result, she was reprimanded by the princess the next day. Then she went back to her room and cried again. When she returned to her parents' home on the third day, her eyes were still swollen.
"The old woman was afraid that I wouldn't offend the young master, so she made me cry and make a scene with him."
Shen Wantang said in a light tone: "This is the first time I've heard of a dowry nanny teaching a bride to cry and make a scene on her wedding day. Everyone else advises the bride to be more amiable so that she can live a harmonious life. Nanny Jin is quite different."
"Since you are so different from others, you can be a lowly maid from now on. You don't need to come into the inner courtyard."
Granny Jin's face changed drastically: "Second Miss, how can you be so unable to distinguish right from wrong! I was advising you to keep the young master, when did I teach you to cry and make a fuss? Besides, I was sent by the Madam, even if you don't give me face, you should at least give the Madam face!"
Standing next to Shen Wantang, Du Juan said indignantly, "Granny Jin is an old servant of the Shen family, yet she still calls her Second Miss. Shouldn't you be calling her Princess Consort?! The Princess Consort told you to step down, but you refused. You have no shame, yet you expect the Princess Consort to give you face. Why should you? Just because you're old?"
Granny Jin had never been scolded by a little maid before, and she immediately lost face, raising her hand to slap Dujuan across the face.
Shen Wantang suddenly stood up: "Granny Jin is going to discipline my maid for me? In that case, I won't be polite either. I will discipline your son for Granny Jin."
Granny Jin's pupils suddenly contracted, and she didn't dare to bring her raised hand down: "What do you mean? My son has nothing to do with this manor!"
"Embroidered Green".
Shen Wantang only said one name, and Granny Jin's expression changed drastically, and she took several steps back.
Her face was pale, and she asked tremblingly, "What...what are you saying? I don't understand!"
"It doesn't matter if you don't understand. If you behave yourself from now on, your son can still live. But if you don't behave yourself, the truth will eventually come out."
Granny Jin didn't know how much she knew, but she couldn't afford to take even the slightest risk. Her son was about to get married to the daughter of a scholar, whose future was bright. She absolutely couldn't let Shen Wantang ruin it!
Apart from Granny Jin's drastic change in expression, the other maids, including Du Juan, had no idea what they were talking about; they had never even heard of Xiu Lu.
However, seeing that Granny Jin had changed from being arrogant and domineering to being obsequious, they knew that this must be Granny Jin's weakness.
"As the Crown Princess's dowry maid, I naturally obey all her orders. I was just too anxious just now, fearing that I wouldn't be able to consummate the marriage with the Crown Prince on the wedding night, which would be unlucky. That's why I spoke without thinking and offended the Crown Princess."
"It's getting late. Please get some rest, Your Highness. You need to see the Prince and Princess tomorrow and need to conserve your energy. I won't disturb you any longer. I'll take them out now."
She bowed her head, spoke respectfully, and then turned and walked outside.
Seeing that Shen Wantang had subdued Granny Jin with just a few words, the other three maids dared not go against her.
They couldn't care less about Qi's instructions to keep a close eye on Shen Wantang right away, and quickly followed Granny Jin out.
After they left, Granny Chai brought in some food, then left silently without saying a word.
Shen Wantang got up before dawn today. After a long day of work, she had barely eaten or drunk anything. She was really thirsty and hungry, so she bent down and started eating.
Dujuan was a maid, but she was actually more free than Dujuan today, since she had already eaten.
She asked curiously, "Princess Consort, who is Xiu Lu? Why is Granny Jin so afraid to hear this name?"
"She was a maid in the Shen family."
"Does the Shen family still have such a maid? I grew up in the manor and have never heard of her before!"
"You haven't heard of her because she disappeared just a few days after entering the manor."
"Is her disappearance related to Granny Jin's son?"
"right."
Du Juan looked at Shen Wantang with surprise and admiration: "Princess Consort, how do you know everything? I don't think you go out much!"
She doesn't go out much in this life, but in her past life, she dressed as a man and followed Liao Youhe to investigate cases and examine corpses. All the strange cases that Liao Youhe solved were thanks to her.
Liao Youhe only knows how to read books by rote, is rigid and inflexible, and doesn't know how to adapt.
Shen Wantang was much more perceptive and adaptable than him, so she became his advisor.
The first major case she solved was the massacre of Xiu Lü's entire family.
Xiu Lu disappeared three years ago, along with her grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and younger siblings—a total of thirteen people.
Judging by the time, it's about time. Xiu Lu's brother will be back from the war soon.
In November, the soldiers of Dafeng will return in triumph. Under the leadership of General Huo, they have defeated the Xiongnu, expanded their territory, and become the heroes of Dafeng.
Xiu Lu's brother had fought bravely against the enemy for the past three years, achieving great military exploits. Upon his return, he was rewarded by the emperor and became a Wuyi General of the fifth rank.
But when he returned home after receiving the reward, he found that his entire family was gone.
Soldiers fought bravely to defend their country while soldiers returned home to find that all their loved ones had mysteriously disappeared!
This is outrageous!
The case quickly alarmed the entire capital, and the emperor ordered a thorough investigation to give the soldiers who defended the country an explanation.
Unfortunately, too much time has passed, and much of the evidence and traces have long since disappeared. The people in charge of this case at the Dali Temple have changed one after another, and no one has ever solved the case.
Two years later, Shen Wantang returned to Beijing with Liao Youhe and inadvertently discovered the suspicious points in the case, thus solving it.
Liao Youhe's reputation soared as a result, and he was appointed to the Dali Temple, where he began to wield real power.
However, this time, Shen Wantang naturally wouldn't help Liao Youhe. The case still needed to be solved, and she planned to give the credit to Princess Ning.
Anyway, she doesn't need the reputation, so she might as well give it to her mother-in-law and get some practical benefits in return.
The entire Ning Prince's mansion has lost face because of the heir. If the princess can solve the major case, it will surely be able to save face and make her happier.
Having made up her mind, Shen Wantang took another bite of bird's nest porridge.
This bird's nest porridge was made with carefully selected ingredients and cooked to perfection; it was clearly prepared with great care for her.
Her mother-in-law treated her very well!
