Chapter 20 Arrived a Step Too Late

"What are you planning to do next?" Xie Qianzhong asked her.

After careful consideration, Song Tangxue realized that the clues pointed to Qing County, which she absolutely had to go there for.

The envelope detailed the hiding place of this rogue soldier in Qing County, as if afraid that his superiors wouldn't be able to find him.

Moreover, we should go as soon as possible. If that rogue soldier notices something is wrong and the place is deserted, it will be a loss.

"I'm going to Qing County." Song Tangxue's head started to ache, and she raised her hand to rub her forehead. "There's no time to lose, I'll go and investigate tomorrow."

Xie Qianzhong didn't stop her, but gave her a deep look and said, "Be careful."

Song Tangxue nodded, her sweat-dampened temples twisted together. Xie Qianzhong shifted his attention: "Remember to drink a bowl of ginger soup when you get back."

She felt that if she was exposed to a cold wind right after sweating, she could easily catch a cold. She felt that her head was already starting to hurt as soon as the carriage curtain was lifted and the cold wind blew in.

Song Tangxue's fingers paused slightly: "Thank you for your instructions, sir."

Looking at the tattered clothes under the cloak, Xie Qianzhong couldn't help but feel a little helpless: "I'll send someone with you tomorrow."

Song Tangxue stopped rubbing her forehead: "Lord Xie, are you worried about me?"

Xie Qianzhong lowered his eyes: "I'm worried that you might accidentally capsize in the gutter and ruin my plans."

Song Tangxue smiled noncommittally. Xie Qianzhong escorted Song Tangxue to the front of the house in the south of the city. Like a butterfly, Song Tangxue gracefully stepped off the carriage as her cloak fluttered in the wind.

Xie Qianzhong called out softly, "Sixteen."

A dark figure appeared silently and knelt on one knee.

"You'll be with Miss Song for the next few days." After saying that, Xie Qianzhong lowered the carriage curtain, and the blue carriage slowly drove out of the alley, gradually blending into the night.

In the short time it took Song Tangxue to turn her head, An Shiliu had already disappeared into the night, proving himself to be a master of concealment.

Uncle Kui had been waiting at the door for a long time. When he saw Song Tangxue come in, he hurriedly came forward to greet her and breathed a sigh of relief. Song Tangxue hinted to Uncle Kui not to say anything more.

He pulled his cloak tighter and led Uncle Kui back into the house, handing him the soldier's letter. Uncle Kui frowned as he read it: "We've been tricked today."

"There's no time to lose. We'll set off tomorrow. Tell the Song family that I've been in a bad mood lately and want to go out for a trip, just to shut them up." Song Tangxue said with some annoyance, swallowing a mouthful of cold tea.

The next morning, as the morning light pierced through the clouds, Song Tangxue led Uncle Kui towards Qing County.

As soon as Song Tangxue got into the carriage, she started rubbing her forehead. She had been exposed to the cold wind last night and had forgotten to drink ginger soup, so her head hurt even more when she woke up this morning.

A sharp, tingling pain shot straight to my forehead.

"Whoa!" Suddenly the carriage jolted violently, and Uncle Kui shouted from outside, "Miss, there's an assassin!"

The sounds of fierce fighting rang out. She had only brought Uncle Kui with her on this trip, and now she was isolated and helpless. Dark Sixteen had just been called away by her to check the strange noises and had not yet returned.

After what happened yesterday, she was somewhat paranoid.

Song Tangxue lowered her hand, reached down and drew the dagger she carried at her waist; it gleamed silver.

He used a dagger to lift the carriage curtain and looked outside. There was a group of burly men, shirtless and carrying large knives.

The leader chuckled: "Brothers, did you hear that? There's a young lady in the car. Carry her back to be our bandit queen."

They've run into bandits. Uncle Kui was just warning Song Tangxue, but he didn't expect that this group would give them a handle to use against her.

Uncle Kui was no match for the four men; several of them had already overtaken him and rushed to the side of the carriage.

The burly man at the head of the group lewdly yanked open the curtain, laughing loudly, "Let me see what kind of beauty she is..."

He was greeted by a flash of silver light; a sharpened dagger pierced his shoulder. Song Tangxue used all her strength, wedging the blade firmly into the burly man's shoulder before suddenly pulling it out.

Blood gushed from the wound. The burly man clutched his shoulder and retreated outside the carriage, cursing under his breath: "Damn it, brothers, this little wench is ruthless. If we can't catch her, we'll kill her alive!"

Seeing their leader injured, the bandits were enraged. The burly men surrounding the carriage were eager to try their luck. This time, two of them climbed up, while Uncle Kui was entangled and powerless, feeling extremely anxious.

Song Tangxue pulled the bag from her waist, held it in her hand, and threw it out when the bandit peeked out. The powder inside spread through the air.

The two bandits in front dropped their broadswords to the ground, clutched their own necks with both hands, their necks turned red, and collapsed to the ground, groaning in pain as they couldn't breathe.

Song Tangxue smashed open the window. Just now, some bandits, enraged, had slashed several large gashes in the carriage with their knives, which benefited Song Tangxue.

As she rolled down, she avoided the poison powder in the air. This was poison powder she had secretly prepared for practice on these bandits.

After rolling several times upon landing, a whooshing sound rang out. Song Tangxue braced herself on the ground warily, looked up, and saw a large sword almost within reach.

There is no way to avoid it.

The ugly bandit gritted his teeth behind his broadsword: "What did you do to them!"

"bite."

The sound of clashing blades rang out. The sixteenth Dark Envoy, dressed in black, caught the blade with his longsword. No matter how hard the bandit pressed down with his clenched fist, he could not advance an inch.

The eyes hidden beneath the black mask coldly watched him, and An Shiliu swiftly dispatched the bandit.

With the help of Dark Sixteen, this group of bandits will never amount to anything.

Uncle Kui helped Song Tangxue to her feet. Song Tangxue coughed lightly and looked at the corpses scattered on the ground with a cold tone: "Go rent horses. We must reach Qing County today."

The longer it dragged on, the greater her unease became.

We rushed as fast as we could, and by the time we arrived in Qing County it was already dusk. The setting sun hung between the mountains and forests, while the moon occupied the other side of the mountain.

Following the address left on the envelope, I arrived at a large house where razor blades stood in unison on the walls.

The main gate was not open, and no servants entered or left the huge mansion.

Uncle Kui worriedly said, "I just asked the vendors next door, and they said the owner of this house moved out a month ago and hasn't come back. Could this be another trap?"

Song Tangxue stood under the willow tree across the street, quietly watching the house under the setting sun, and gritted her teeth: "I have no choice but to take a gamble."

As the moon rose in the west, Song Tangxue changed back into her black clothes and silently slipped into the mansion through the side door.

The mansion was deep and silent at night, like a wild beast lurking in the darkness, watching passersby, baring its unfathomable fangs, waiting for its prey to enter its mouth.

Song Tangxue carefully made her way along the wall. The huge mansion was dark, with no lights on, and the long, dark corridors stretched into the distance.

Stepping across the front yard, a familiar figure lay in the yard, another corpse lying in a pool of blood.

The thing Song Tangxue feared eventually happened; they arrived too late.

Uncle Kui crouched down, checked the pulse, and shook his head: "He's dead."

The night breeze blew through Song Tangxue's thin clothes, and a chill crept onto her chest.
