Chapter 37 Blinded by Greed

"Young Miss, you're back." The servant at the door was unusually enthusiastic, as if he had been waiting for a long time: "Madam wants to see you."

Song Tangxue lowered her eyes and quietly looked at the ground, her toes still dangling, not yet touching the ground of this so-called home.

After the incident at Song Tangxue's door, the servant at the door kept his head down and did not dare to urge him.

He stared intently at his toes, wishing they would bloom into flowers, hoping that this ancestor wouldn't make things difficult for him; he was just a messenger.

"I understand." Song Tangxue's feet finally touched the ground, and the sound of her footsteps fading into the distance lingered. The servant wiped the sweat from his forehead.

I don't know when, but Song Tangxue's aura has become so strong.

There was a commotion in Song's mother's courtyard. Before even entering, one could hear Song Tangli's soft sobbing and Song's mother's gentle words of comfort.

Song Tangxue straightened her shoulders and listened for a while at the courtyard gate before stepping into the courtyard.

The people in the courtyard, whether facing her directly or secretly glancing at her, all had their eyes on her in an instant.

Song's mother looked at her coldly: "I see you've become quite capable now, you have no manners at all, you don't even greet your mother!"

"Then why didn't my half-sister greet me?" Song Tangxue retorted, her gaze slowly sweeping over the people in the courtyard.

Mr. Song, Mrs. Song, and Old Mrs. Song all came.

It's unclear how much of this is genuinely to seek justice for Song Tangli, or simply an excuse to get what they want.

"Clatter." The teacup in Song's mother's hand was thrown to Song Tangxue's feet, splashing tea everywhere and soaking her shoes and socks.

They scattered randomly, rolling and freezing.

Song Tangxue remained indifferent, as if she hadn't seen any of this, and moved aside: "Why is Mother so angry?"

Song's mother's hand trembled as she pointed at her: "How dare you ask? Why did you make things difficult for your sister at today's banquet!"

Song Tangli quietly clutched her mother's clothes: "Mother, please don't be angry. Be careful not to hurt yourself. My sister didn't mean it."

"Song Tangxue, you have bullied your own sister time and time again. If you don't give an explanation today, get out of the Song family mansion!" Song's mother seized the opportunity to regain the face she had lost over the past few days.

"Leaving aside the fact that my half-sister is spouting nonsense, you can find out the whole truth about the banquet if you just ask around."

"And Mother, have you forgotten that it was you who invited me back? Now, I hold the highest position in the Song family. Are you going to kick me out? Am I, the Crown Princess, not even allowed to return to my own residence?"

Song's father's eyes widened: "Song Tangxue, you've really gone too far! You're talking about a Crown Princess who's not even married yet. Do you expect her to kneel and kowtow to your father in the future?"

Song Tangxue lowered her eyes and chuckled softly: "That's certainly how it should be. And has Father forgotten that if it weren't for me, this useless Crown Princess, how could you have gotten such a leisurely and comfortable position as Right Prime Minister?"

“After clocking in for court each day, I would stay at home idly.”

This statement is not only a sarcastic remark about Song's father being too controlling.

Everyone in the court knew that the Left Chancellor held real power, while the Right Chancellor was merely a figurehead position. In terms of actual power, the Right Chancellor couldn't even compare to the Six Ministries.

Mr. Song was furious, his mouth opening and closing several times but he couldn't find the right words.

The female lead watched the farce with indifference, a hint of boredom flashing in her eyes. At this moment, Song Tangli was afraid that Song Tangxue would really disregard everything and expose what she had done at the banquet, so she dared not say a word and hid behind her mother.

In the past, she wouldn't have been afraid, knowing that her father and mother would stand by her unconditionally. But this time was different; many people had witnessed it.

"If Father and Mother have nothing else to do, I'll be leaving now. It's late, so please get some rest."

Song Tangxue's nonchalant attitude infuriated the old lady.

Seeing Song Tangxue turn around and walk out decisively, Old Madam Song slammed her snake-head cane on her hand: "Did I give you permission to leave?"

"Such disrespect for elders! Today I will teach you proper manners, so that when you grow up, the imperial family will laugh at the Song family for failing to raise their daughter properly!"

His words were delivered with intonation and righteous indignation, as if he were genuinely worried about the Song family.

Song Tangxue smiled sarcastically, turned around and was about to say something when Haitang rushed into the courtyard from outside the door: "Miss, Her Majesty the Empress summons you to the palace."

Old Mrs. Song's momentum suddenly weakened. At this moment, she would certainly not be the one to back down. Mother Song swallowed her resentment and anger: "There must be some misunderstanding. Mother, don't worry."

"Tang Xue is really something. If you've been wronged, just talk it out. Why be so stubborn? Your mother carried you for ten months and gave birth to you. Even if you break your mother's bones, you'll still be connected by blood."

The Song family, the Empress Dowager in the palace, cannot be offended. Even if Song Tangxue agrees to bring Song Tangli into the family, it is still not as formal as this imperial marriage.

This is not the right time to confront Song Tangxue head-on.

Thinking about all this, Song's mother's expression softened even more: "Tang Xue is a good child, she won't care about these things, will she?"

Song Tangxue didn't even bother to glance at the few disgusting people in the courtyard, and turned around to swagger out of the courtyard.

Although the group was unwilling and resentful, they dared not stop them, and could only swallow their emotions and suffer in silence.

Song Tangli almost ground her teeth to powder. It had been a very long time since she had made Song Tangxue suffer a loss. On the contrary, she had lost face at Song Tangxue's hands several times.

After entering the palace gates, we arrived at the entrance to the Empress's palace.

The fine white jade floor shimmered with a warm glow, and in the distance, wisps of mist seemed to shroud the unreal palace. Phoenixes spread their wings as if about to take flight on the eaves carved from sandalwood, and there were floating windows carved from green tiles and walls made of piled jade.

The Empress was already waiting anxiously outside the palace gate. As the sun set, her pacing could be faintly seen, her long shadow stretching out like a thin chain.

Upon seeing Song Tangxue arrive, her eyes lit up, and she stepped forward to take her hand affectionately, saying, "I couldn't sit still as soon as I heard that Tangxue was coming. I was afraid that the palace servants who led the way would neglect you or that you would be unhappy in some way, which would make our Tangxue feel uneasy."

The personal maid beside her chimed in, "Yes, Her Majesty has been talking about it for a long time, just waiting for Miss Song."

Song Tangxue smiled and looked at her: "Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty. Everything is fine."

Upon entering the palace, the palace maid, with keen insight, closed the door behind her.

The Empress, seated in her high position, asked, "Tang Xue, I'd like to ask about that sum of money you mentioned before."

After saying that, as if she felt that it was too obvious, Empress Cheng added a few more words to cover it up: "I am not rushing for that money. After all, it was your money to begin with. There are many places in the palace that need to be taken care of."

After speaking, she leisurely raised her head and gently brushed the tea lid, the wisps of smoke obscuring her face, which was filled with greed and lust.
