Chapter 43 Seize That Ray of Light

Once inside, An Shiliu closed the door and stood guard outside.

As the wooden door creaked open, the sunlight was blocked, and she too fell into the shadows, just like Xie Qianzhong.

Seeing this scene, Xie Qianzhong seemed to sigh, his words tinged with amusement. He gently nudged the beauty with his toe, causing her body to tremble. "Ah Xue, what do you think we should do with this person?"

Song Tangxue walked straight up to Xie Qianzhong without looking to the side, lowered her eyes to meet the beauty's gaze, her beautiful eyes filled with tears: "Miss Song, please have mercy and forgive me this time."

Seeing Xie Qianzhong gently questioning Song Tangxue, the beauty crawled forward on her knees, grabbed Song Tangxue's skirt and shook her repeatedly, her eyes filled with tears. Finally, she kowtowed heavily to the ground, making a loud thud.

Her snow-white forehead was quickly stained red with blood, but the beauty seemed unaware.

Xie Qianzhong's gaze also fell on her. Song Tangxue recalled the extremely tender "A-Xue" she had just heard, an affectionate term of endearment that sounded like a term of endearment between husband and wife.

"Who told you to touch her? Kill her." Xie Qianzhong's words fell lightly. The guards behind him stepped forward, and the beauty screamed in fright, retreating repeatedly.

The silver blade flashed past, leaving a long wound on the beauty's neck, from which blood gushed out and splattered onto Song Tangxue's skirt.

The beauty's eyes widened, and she reluctantly parted her red lips, opening them weakly, but ultimately she couldn't utter a single word. Her body went limp to the ground, and she fell silent.

The moment the blade was drawn, Song Tangxue instinctively closed her eyes, then opened them again, staring blankly at Xie Qianzhong.

After a long silence, he lowered his head and looked at the beauty lying in the pool of blood. Her clothes were stained red with blood, and her eyes were wide open, unable to close in death.

Song Tangxue's heart skipped a beat. One second she was a vibrant life, still able to speak, and now she lay motionless on the ground.

Xie Qianzhong uttered only a few words softly.

The sunlight outside couldn't reach her, and her fingers trembled slightly, feeling cold.

The only sound in the quiet room was the footsteps of the assassin returning behind Xie Qianzhong. His steps were unhurried, clearly indicating that he had witnessed such scenes many times before.

"Thump thump thump..."

Stopping her steps, Song Tangxue looked at Xie Qianzhong as if coming back to her senses. Xie Qianzhong's eyes were deep and complicated as he looked at her. After a long while, he scoffed, "Miss Song, are you scared?"

Song Tangxue shook her head and let out a soft sigh: "This person wouldn't appear here for no reason."

Xie Qian nodded firmly: "These are spies sent by someone else. Aren't you afraid, Miss Song? There are no people of yours here."

The ending note remains gentle, just as tender as the question just asked.

Song Tangxue shook her head firmly, took a step forward, and closed the gap between them: "As long as it is Lord Xie, I will not be afraid."

Xie Qianzhong's heart skipped a beat. Those who have walked alone in the darkness for a long time will also yearn for light, but those lights are all fleeting or illusory.

And what about this beam of light?

Xie Qianzhong raised his hand, and the sunlight streaming through the window fell on his palm, lightly covering it. Next to his palm was Song Tangxue's skirt.

"Is that so?" Xie Qianzhong asked in a low voice.

Song Tangxue: "Yes, I'm not afraid as long as they are adults."

"Alright." Xie Qianzhong chuckled, placing his hand lightly at his side and asking, "What brings you here today?"

Song Tangxue joked, trying to ease the slightly suffocating atmosphere: "Can't you come if there's nothing wrong?"

Xie Qianzhong glanced at her sideways and gave her a nickname: "Miss Song who only comes to the temple when she has something to ask."

Song Tangxue's face flushed slightly, realizing she really had something to discuss: "I want to break off my engagement with the Crown Prince. I wonder if Lord Xie has any good ideas?"

Since her image was already like this, Song Tangxue went straight to the point, as if she was giving up.

Xie Qianzhong's eyes flickered: "What benefit would I get from helping you? You should know that I never do anything that doesn't benefit me."

Seeing the man's calm and composed expression, Song Tangxue's heart stirred, and she really wanted to see another expression on that face.

Song Tangxue lowered her head and stared at those bright red lips for a long time. They were even redder than a woman's lip rouge.

Xie Qianzhong didn't get a reply from Song Tangxue. Just as he was about to speak again, his slightly parted lips touched something soft.

Light and shadow fell on Song Tangxue's closed eyebrows and eyes, her eyelashes trembled and fell into his eyes, and the boundless light overwhelmed his heart.

As Xie Qianzhong's lips brushed against Song Tangxue's warm breath, his chin lifted slightly, his throat bobbed, and his mind went blank for a moment, like the moment fireworks exploded with tremendous force.

The next second, Xie Qianzhong pushed Song Tangxue away, the warmth of her lips leaving his lips. Xie Qianzhong pursed his lips, his voice low and hoarse: "Miss Song, how could you be so reckless, is it...?"

Song Tangxue gazed at his eyelashes: "Only Lord Xie."

Xie Qianzhong chuckled briefly, his face and heart were both warm, and he felt a slight burning sensation all over his body: "Both the Emperor and the Empress Dowager are Buddhists. The Empress Dowager is going to Huguo Temple soon, and that will be your opportunity."

Song Tangxue didn't ask why Xie Qianzhong knew everything about the royal family's itinerary. This matter hadn't been leaked at all, which suggested that the Empress Dowager wanted to travel there secretly.

"I must thank you again, Lord Xie. Are you really not going to consider letting me repay you with my body?" Song Tangxue accepted the scheme.

Xie Qianzhong looked at him calmly, his fingers lightly tapping the table, the touch a little cool: "Miss Song, please watch your words."

"My lord, His Highness the Crown Prince has come to visit." An Shiliu's voice came from outside the door, sounding somewhat distorted and hazy.

Xie Qianzhong let out a breath of stale air: "Understood."

Song Tangxue took a step back, as if the enchanting moment had never happened, and politely took her leave.

Li Zhaoxian was waiting at the door when he saw Song Tangxue come out of the house, with Xie Qianzhong following behind her at a distance.

She subtly furrowed her brow: "What are you doing here?"

Song Tangxue concealed the disgust in her eyes: "I've come to ask Lord Xie for help." Without saying more, Song Tangxue turned to leave.

Li Zhaoxian had a feeling that the two were not simple. Song Tangxue was just a young lady who rarely left her home. What could she possibly need Xie Qianzhong's help for?

Before he could ask any further questions, Xie Qianzhong, standing on the steps against the light, spoke up: "What brings Your Highness here?"

Li Zhaoxian withdrew his gaze and landed on the dignified figure standing there.

Early the next morning, Haitang entered the room, panting: "Miss, several shopkeepers are requesting an audience at the entrance of the Song residence. It seems there's a problem with their shops. You should go and take a look."

Why would a problem arise out of nowhere?

Song Tangxue put down her book and followed Haitang to the door. Several shopkeepers were being stopped outside by the servants at the door and were pacing anxiously.

As soon as Song Tangxue stepped out the door, the shopkeepers immediately grabbed her and started chattering away as if they had seen a savior, making Song Tangxue's head ache.
