Chapter 36 Parents' Past

Zhou Sui pretended to be focused and didn't turn around. Zhou Dayong didn't pay attention and continued talking to himself.

"Your mom is angry."

It's obvious.

"I've never seen her ears look so angry."

I've never seen it either.

“Dad really knows he was wrong, and he really thought about it when he went back to the brick factory this time.”

They've all come up with something.

“Your mother is such a good person. I not only hit her, but I also think about her like this. I deserve to die. I’m so sorry to her.”

I wouldn't say I deserve to die, but I really feel bad for her.

"Your mother is beautiful, gentle, and capable. She's good at everything, both inside and outside the house, and she takes good care of our family."

You know that's good enough. My mom has so many good qualities; she's the best mom in the world.

“But your father is just average-looking, can’t speak, is a cripple, and has no skills. When I married your mother, I told her that she could have a good life with me.”

"Back then, your mother was only eighteen years old. There were quite a few suitors who came to propose marriage. Some were richer than me, some were better looking than me, and I was the least outstanding among them."

Zhou Sui's ears perked up immediately. She was very curious about her parents' love story. "And then? How did my mom end up marrying you?"

Her sudden words startled Zhou Dayong, who was talking to himself, but Zhou Sui's question quickly drew him back to his memories of the past.

"Because an old village doctor took your mother's pulse and said that your mother has difficulty having children."

Zhou Sui was shocked; she had never heard of this before.

Perhaps because of the passage of time, and Li Qiuju's birth of Zhou Xu, the matter was gradually forgotten.

"You know what your maternal grandparents' house is like. Your mother really suffered back in her parents' home."

Even a tough man like Zhou Dayong feels heartbroken when he recalls these events.

"She takes on all the dirty, heavy, and tiring jobs; the whole family uses her for everything."

"I remember that for several years in a row, the winters were extremely cold, and many families had to boil water to wash their clothes."

“Your grandma is so fussy. She says things like we have to be clean during the New Year. The river is frozen over, but your mom is still washing clothes and blankets by the river.”

"The water was so cold that she couldn't feel her hands anymore. Her hands turned purple from the cold, and her palms just lay there, unable to bend her fingers. She didn't know how many years she had lived like that."

"It's possible that I've damaged my body. The old village doctor took my pulse and said that it would be difficult for me to conceive unless I take good care of myself."

Let alone a young woman's body, even a grown man couldn't withstand washing clothes in the freezing cold.

Zhou Sui's hatred for the Li family intensified; they were truly unfit to be parents.

"Back then, fewer people wanted to propose marriage after hearing about this, because it was hard to accept from any angle."

In those days, marriages were arranged by parents and matchmakers, so there was hardly any affection between the two people at the beginning.

Most people believe that the purpose of marrying a wife is to carry on the family line; if she can't have children, what's the point of marrying her?

Even if they could recover, they wouldn't be willing to do it, because recovery costs money, and with that money they could marry someone better.

“Your maternal grandparents are furious about this. They blame the village doctor for talking nonsense and your mother for not being able to accept a higher dowry because she can’t have children.”

"That's when I dared to propose. You have no idea how beautiful your mother is. Compared to those people, I'm nothing. I was lucky to marry your mother."

Hearing Zhou Dayong make such a self-deprecating joke, Zhou Sui couldn't help but comfort him.

“Dad, don’t say that. People are different. Even if you’re not as outstanding as others, you still have your own strengths.”

Zhou Dayong felt a little better after his daughter's comfort.

"Dad, given Mom's situation back then, how did Grandma agree to your marriage?"

In situations like this, the groom's parents should do everything in their power to stop it.

“I really angered your grandma. I broke two of those thick sticks.”

Zhou Dayong held out his hand and gestured, "I even told your grandma that if she can take good care of you after we marry you, then we can have children."

"It doesn't matter if he can't have children. He doesn't need a grandson to take care of him in his old age. He has me as his son."

"Your grandma was so angry that she hit me with a bamboo stick until her own hand swelled up."

In the end, the mother couldn't resist her son's stubbornness and compromised.

"Dad, you only met Mom once, didn't you? Do you love her that much?"

Zhou Dayong smiled shyly, "What love? I don't understand at all."

“Your mom smiled at me then, and I’ve never seen such a beautiful smile before, nor such a beautiful girl.”

"Later, when I saw how your maternal grandmother's family treated your mother, I felt terrible. At that time, it seemed that the only way to save her was to marry her."

Zhou Sui sighed. What kind of feelings were these? Love at first sight? A white moonlight? A protective instinct?

“It was your mother who insisted on adopting you back then,” Zhou Dayong suddenly brought up this matter.

“That was the second year of our marriage. I accompanied her to get medicine to help her recover. You were under a rock by the roadside, wrapped in a big red blanket, with a chubby face, not crying or making a fuss.”

“Your mom smiled at you when she picked you up, and she loved you so much that she didn’t want to let go.”

“We asked around for many days and even went to the village secretary, but no one knew where you came from.”

"Later, your mother said that since we met, it must be fate. She didn't know if she could give birth to you in the end, so she adopted you."

"When we were naming you and registering your household, our rice stalks were growing big and dense, so your mother and I decided to name you Zhou Sui."

"Dad will tell you a secret, your mom loves you the most, even your younger brother has to wait his turn."

Zhou Dayong glanced at the main house and lowered his voice.

How could Zhou Sui not know? She could sense it.

“Your mother had a very hard life before. She always told me that she would never let you suffer the same hardship again.”

Therefore, Zhou Sui doesn't need to touch cold water, nor does she need to do heavy work; she has everything that Zhou Xu has.

Li Qiuju was always patient with her, and she would buy her the pretty clothes that other girls had.

She would often remind Zhou Sui that girls should take good care of their bodies.

After listening to what Zhou Dayong said, Zhou Sui suddenly understood.

All that Li Qiuju wanted, and didn't get, she gave herself.

Zhou Sui felt her eyes getting wet; she remembered a sentence.

Happy people use their childhood to heal their entire lives, while unhappy people spend their entire lives healing from their childhood.

Some people spend their entire lives trying to heal from childhood traumas.

Zhou Sui felt even more sorry for her mother. The Li family didn't cherish such a good person, but she was a treasure to them.

“Dad,” Zhou Sui said to Zhou Dayong, uttering a rebellious remark.

"I'm telling you this again, if you ever do anything bad to Mom again, I will definitely leave you and keep you here!"
