Chapter 77 Don't Have Any Mischief Intentions

The first to leave this dinner party were Zhou Meimei and her daughter Chen Jiazhen.

The two of them still had to go back to town; it was too late and they were worried about not being able to ride their bikes on the road.

Li Qiuju was a very warm-hearted person, and Chen Jiazhen, carrying the things, naturally wouldn't let her go back empty-handed.

Now, you have to pay for everything in town. She took advantage of her free time to pack a lot of vegetables for Chen Jiazhen, as well as the chickens they raised at home.

Chen Jiazhen accepted the vegetables despite her reluctance, but she refused the chicken no matter how much Li Qiuju tried to persuade her.

The chickens raised by the Zhou family are glossy and plump, and they look quite heavy; each chicken must be worth a lot of money.

Her own daughter works for the Zhou family, and they treat Zhou Meimei very well; how could she accept that?

After some polite refusals, Chen Jiazhen picked up the groceries, took her daughter, and rode the bicycle borrowed from the Zhou family back home.

As soon as they got home, Chen Jiazhen couldn't wait to tell her daughter, "Xiaomei, you've got good taste this time."

Zhou Meimei was still unaware of what was happening when her mother gave her an approving look.

Inside the house, Zhou Meimei's father, Zhou Pingjun, was sitting on the sofa reading a book. He was a logistics worker at the town's primary school and loved to read when he had nothing to do.

Seeing his wife and daughter return, he closed the book he was holding and gently placed it on the table. "You're back."

Chen Jiazhen put the vegetables down at the kitchen doorway, started taking off her scarf, and excitedly told her husband, "Our Meimei has really met a benefactor this time."

“Song Qi’an is a thousand times better than Wu Qiang. Someone like Wu Qiang wants my daughter to work like a slave in his house. Bah, he’s dreaming.”

Zhou Meimei had already told her family about Wu Qiang's situation. Chen Jiazhen had been cursing him at home for days. If Zhou Pingjun hadn't stopped her, she would have gone to Wu's steamed bun shop to point at Wu Qiang and yell at him.

"Have you found out everything?" Zhou Pingjun knew that Chen Jiazhen had come back to the village today, not for the meal, but mainly to inquire about Song Qi'an.

Chen Jiazhen plopped down on the sofa. "I've found out everything."

“I even met Song Qi’an’s mother, Zhao Wenxiu. Old Zhou, do you remember her?”

Zhou Pingjun thought for a while and then shook his head. "I don't remember much, but I do remember the Zhao family."

"Old Master Zhao used to be the village party secretary, and the Zhao family has always lived a very good life."

Although Grandpa Zhao has now retired, everyone in the village still respects him. When he was the village secretary, he always advocated treating the educated youth who came to the countryside well.

The educated youth have long since returned to their hometowns, but they still cherish the memory of Grandpa Zhao. Those who can come during festivals and holidays will visit, and those who cannot will send gifts through intermediaries.

Among those educated youth, some came from ordinary families, while others came from wealthy families, and some even came from families with government officials.

Upon confirming that it was the Zhao family, Zhou Pingjun felt a surge of excitement. In this way, his daughter would be set for life, and perhaps he could even help her move forward.

He worked in logistics at the elementary school for over ten years, always hoping to get promoted, but it's easier said than done for someone in logistics to get promoted.

"The Zhao family is alright. I heard that Song Qi'an's parents are divorced." Chen Jiazhen didn't ask Zhao Wenxiu about this, but only heard it from Zhang Cui and asked a couple of questions about it.

"Song Qi'an is currently with Zhao Wenxiu, who is still living at the Zhao family's house. We don't know the specifics of the situation."

I haven't found out why they got divorced or how their assets were divided.

“Why bother with those things?” Zhou Pingjun analyzed to his wife. “Look at Song Qi’an, he no longer relies on his father for a living. The Zhao family alone is enough to ensure he has no worries about food and clothing, not to mention the good job he has now.”

"You probably can't find another job like his in the whole town. As long as he's a good person and can give Meimei a good life, that's enough."

Zhou Meimei overheard this as she came out of the house, "Mom and Dad, what are you talking about? Who will give me a good life?"

Chen Jiazhen pulled her daughter over to sit down, her eyes full of mischief. "Who else could it be but Song Qi'an?"

In the past, Zhou Meimei's eyes would have lit up immediately upon hearing the name Song Qi'an, but now her shoulders slumped, her head hung low, and she looked listless and weak.

"Mom and Dad, it's impossible for me and Song Qi'an to be together."

“Why is that impossible?” Chen Jiazhen and her husband exchanged a glance, both of them filled with doubt.

Zhou Pingjun gestured to her with his eyes to ask what was going on. She was in high spirits when she went to the Zhou family for dinner today, but her mood changed completely after just one meal.

"Meimei, tell Mom what happened."

Zhou Meimei was a little unsure how to start the conversation.

"What are you daydreaming about, child? Speak up!" Chen Jiazhen saw her standing there in a daze and became inexplicably worried.

This child is picky to begin with. It's one thing to be picky about other things, but to be picky about Song Qi'an is another. She'll never be able to get married.

“They don’t like me anyway,” Zhou Meimei muttered, recalling the scenes she had witnessed at the Zhou family’s house that day.

No wonder Song Qi'an always comes to the shop from time to time, now I understand.

Thinking about this, Zhou Meimei felt a pang of sadness, and she kept moving closer to Song Qi'an.

It would be understandable if it were someone else, but that person is Zhou Sui.

Song Qi'an treats Zhou Sui differently from others; if she were to shamelessly cling to her again, it would be too embarrassing for her.

Zhou Meimei isn't ugly, and no matter how good Song Qi'an is, there's nothing he can do if he doesn't like her.

How do you know they don't like you? Did you ask them?

"That's right. You haven't known each other for long and you don't know each other well enough. It's too early to say you don't like each other. Let's get to know each other better first."

Zhou Meimei was getting a headache from her parents' relentless questioning.
