The next day, after Zhou Sui finished breakfast and said goodbye to Grandma Zhou, she took a large bag of clothes and hitched a ride to town.
She explored the area yesterday and now knows where the crowds are.
As soon as Zhou Sui got off the bus, she headed straight for the residential buildings. There was a large area in the town that was full of residential buildings, and in another half hour, people would start to come out to buy groceries.
Zhou Sui picked a clean spot by the roadside, laid out a plain-colored sheet, took out the clothes from the bag and arranged them, and even picked out a few nice ones to attract passersby.
After all this was done, people gradually came out of the residential building, mostly women.
Zhou Sui cleared her throat and shouted, "The clothes are on clearance sale at a loss! Don't miss out! They're all high-quality clothes from the department store!"
Zhou Sui dressed up specially for today's shopping trip. She tied her long hair, which reached her back, into a side braid, and tied a small blue and white floral strip of cloth at the end of the braid to match the blue dress she was wearing.
She wasn't particularly tall, but she was beautiful. Her sky-blue dress gave her a serene air, and passersby couldn't help but glance at her a few times.
Zhou Sui seized the opportunity to say, "Sister, look at the clothes, they're all of good quality."
As she spoke, she picked up a piece of clothing and went up to introduce it, saying, "Feel it and see, isn't the quality top-notch?"
It must be said that although the styles of clothes are relatively limited nowadays, the quality is truly unparalleled.
The woman, whom she called "sister," was nearly forty years old, but the word still made her stop in her tracks. She reached out and touched the woman's arm. "It's not bad."
How much is this?
"Sister, these are all from the department store. Business is tough, so I'm selling them at a discount." Zhou Sui unfolded the clothes. "Twenty-one pieces."
The older woman clicked her tongue. "Twenty? That's not cheap. There's a shop up ahead that sells it for just over ten yuan. Twenty is too expensive."
Zhou Sui smiled and said, "You mean the one that the auntie in front sells, right?"
Not far ahead, there was an older woman selling clothes. Her location was excellent, overlooking three residential buildings at one intersection.
“I can tell you’re quite knowledgeable. Just by touching that aunt’s clothes and my clothes, you know which one is better.”
Zhou Sui went to that stall yesterday and checked it out; she was sure her clothes were of better quality than hers.
“They’re all clothes, they’re not that different, they all look the same when you put them on.” The older woman made a move to leave, but Zhou Sui quickly called her back.
"Sister, it's definitely different."
"Come on, let me find you some clothes to try on. We can't tell anything about clothes just by looking at them or looking at the price. We have to try them on to know if they fit."
Zhou Sui deftly produced a red plaid coat, saying, "You have fair skin, this coat complements your complexion even better."
The older woman hesitated, "Oh, I won't try it. It would be too much trouble for you if I tried it and then didn't buy it."
"What trouble do I have?"
"Here, reach out your hand, I'll help you put on your clothes."
Zhou Sui shook out the clothes, helped her older sister put them on, and then helped straighten the hem and collar.
“You are tall and have fair skin. This dress is not for everyone. A while ago, a young girl came to try it on and loved it, but she just couldn’t pull it off.”
"Wow, this outfit looks like it was tailor-made for you; it fits you perfectly."
After Zhou Sui finished speaking, her older sister raised her arm and stretched. "It really is just right, not too loose and not too tight."
“I’ve never worn this red dress before. You know, young girls tried it on before, but I’m already this old, how can I wear this dress?”
The older woman took two steps to the side and looked at her reflection in the glass of the shop next door.
This is why Zhou Sui chose this location; she can see the effect on her body directly, which is much better than her own constant explanations.
"What do you mean 'old age'? You're still young. These clothes don't discriminate by age; it's all about whether they suit you."
"Besides, you've never worn red before, so you might as well buy one and try it on."
"The weather isn't too cold now, so you can wear a skirt underneath and leave your clothes open."
"When it gets colder, I'll buy a belt and tie it around my waist. It'll look so stylish. That's how city people dress."
The image of Zhou Sui's words replayed in the older sister's mind. She tightened the waist of her clothes and said, "Now that you mention it, it's actually quite good."
Judging from the older sister's expression, she was clearly very satisfied with the dress.
Zhou Sui smiled slightly. She had sold clothes for a while in her previous life, and that's when she gradually became bolder. She knew what kind of clothes suited what kind of person. She wasn't sure she could pick the perfect clothes every time, but at least nine out of ten would be suitable.
"Little sister, can you give me a discount on this dress? Twenty is too expensive." The older sister looked at the dress for a while before taking it off.
"Sister, I put these clothes here. You wouldn't be able to buy them in a department store for less than forty or fifty yuan."
"Look at this dress, the workmanship is so good, there isn't a single loose thread."
The eldest sister carefully looked through it and found it to be exactly as Zhou Sui had said.
"It's nice, but it's a bit expensive." The older woman gritted her teeth. "How about this, you give me a discount of five yuan, and I'll buy this dress."
Zhou Sui looked at her with difficulty, "Sister, I'm already selling at a loss. Losing one or two yuan is about right. Losing too much won't do."
"Oh dear, you have to give me a discount. I'll introduce you to some people later. I know a lot of people here. If each person buys one item, we might finish buying everything for you in no time."
Zhou Sui knew this was just polite talk to bargain, so she pretended to be helpless and said, "Since you've put it that way, I'll give you a discount. Five yuan won't do, but I'll make it two yuan less, how about eighteen?"
"Eighteen?" The older sister was about to speak when Zhou Sui said again, "Sister, eighteen doesn't sound good. How about seventeen? That's the price. I really won't sell it for any less."
The older sister laughed and said, "Alright, seventeen it is."
Zhou Sui turned around to find a bag to put the clothes in. "Sister, I don't usually bargain for these clothes. If anyone asks, just say you bought them for twenty, otherwise I'll be too embarrassed to go home."
"Okay, I understand." The woman paid and left satisfied, carrying her clothes.
With business starting, Zhou Sui became even more energetic and worked harder to promote her wares. Her outstanding appearance and eloquence attracted quite a few people.
Of course, some people think the clothes are of good quality and look good, so they buy them; others think they are too expensive, and after failing to negotiate the price, they don't buy them.
In just one lunch break, Zhou Sui sold more than a dozen pieces of clothing, her mouth dry from talking so much.
After seeing off a mother and daughter who had just bought clothes, Zhou Sui plopped down on the ground and took out her water bottle, gulping down several mouthfuls of water.
"Hey little sister, little sister selling clothes!" Just as Zhou Sui put down the kettle, she saw the older sister who had just bought the red clothes rushing over.
