Chapter 16 Successful Divorce

With Chang Jing's hypnotic assistance, Song Huizhen and Chang Guomin secretly signed an agreement to divorce, without the knowledge of the Chang family.

"Mom, did my older brother lose 60,000 yuan gambling? He borrowed money from loan sharks and can't pay it back. If his workplace finds out, he'll lose his job, and it might even drag our Zhenjiang down with him."

Yesterday, when someone at the oil press factory asked about Chang Guomin, Chang Xiaogu felt extremely ashamed. Her older brother had gambled and, when he couldn't pay her, he actually sent someone to the market to ask her sister-in-law for money. She almost didn't want to admit that he was such a scumbag.

So this morning, after arranging things at the oil press, she notified her other sisters to come to her parents' home together.

"Mom, didn't Amin go to work today? His company said he took the day off. Did he take the day off to play cards?"

Chang Sanjie called Chang Guomin's workplace, hoping to find out about the high-interest loan, but she couldn't find him.

“Dad, you have to keep an eye on Amin this time. He gambled once before, and after only a few years of recovery, he started gambling again. This time, Huizhen is probably really going to divorce him.”

As soon as Third Sister Chang finished speaking, Second Sister Chang's shrill voice rang out.

"If you ask me, Song Huizhen is useless. She can't even control her own man. I won't pay this gambling debt. Last time I paid five thousand yuan, and my brother Gui scolded me to death. If I pay again this time, my own family will fall apart."

“If you don’t want to pay, then don’t pay. Is anyone asking you to pay now? You’re so capable of controlling your man, but you’ve been cursing your own brother for two years when he asked you to borrow five thousand yuan.”

Chang Sanjie despised her second sister the most. When there was something to gain, she would be all sweet talk, but when there was nothing to gain, she would not only run away the fastest but also kick her when she was down.

She was the kind of person who was all talk and no action, and who was also a cunning and ruthless person. When Chang Guomin lost a huge sum of money gambling for the first time and ran away, the Chang family raised money to pay off his debts.

Under pressure from her parents, Chang Erjie took out five thousand yuan, but cursed Song Huizhen for two whole years until Song Huizhen received the compensation for the expropriation of the orchard and returned it to her, at which point she toned it down a bit.

Two years ago, Chang Erjie wanted to start an oil pressing business. She would visit Chang Sanjie's house every few days. In the end, the oil pressing factory was taken over by Chang Xiaogu, and Chang Erjie scolded her for three days straight.

Chang Sanjie was wronged because Chang Erjie never mentioned wanting to take over the oil press factory. Moreover, the transfer fee for that oil press factory was not cheap; Chang Xiaogu spent a full 60,000 yuan to transfer it.

Second Sister Chang didn't have the capital at all, so her initial idea was to take over first and pay later when it made money. But Third Sister Chang's husband was a businessman, and he wasn't about to give up his business for nothing.

Because of this incident, Second Sister Chang went around saying that Third Sister Chang looked down on poor relatives and refused to help them after becoming successful. She claimed that Third Sister Chang was rich but heartless, preferring to spend tens of thousands of yuan on cordyceps and abalone rather than give poor relatives a way to make a living.

Chang Sanjie was naturally unhappy about being talked about like that, but she couldn't catch them in the act, which made her extremely frustrated. From then on, the two of them were outwardly friendly but inwardly at odds.

“Yes, we poor people have no choice. It takes a long time to save up a few thousand yuan. You are as rich as me. You can easily buy some bird’s nest and cordyceps and you will have 60,000 yuan. Why would Amin be afraid of not having money to pay off the loan sharks?”

After making sarcastic remarks, Second Sister Chang wanted Third Sister Chang to impulsively take on all the responsibilities, ideally settling Chang Guomin's debts.

"You... what business is it of yours if I buy cordyceps and bird's nest? Stop being sarcastic. Aren't you just upset that I sold the oil mill to my little sister? Of course, it's because some people want to get something for nothing, without putting in any capital, and still expect people to beg and fawn over them. You're crazy."

The two sisters started arguing in front of the two elders of the Chang family. The old lady of the Chang family originally didn't want to get involved, but the more she listened, the angrier she became.

"Shut up, did I bring you back to argue? If you want to argue, go outside and argue. Don't give me a headache and annoy me."

Grandpa Chang held his old pipe filled with tobacco, and the quarrel between his two daughters didn't affect him at all, showing an air of composure even if a mountain collapsed before him.

At this moment, Chang Guomin, who had just received his divorce certificate, also returned. In a bad mood, all he wanted to do was come home and sleep.

The faint voices of the Chang sisters from across the street made Chang Guomin, who was about to open his own door, turn around and knock on the old Chang family's door.

"Brother, you're back."

When Aunt Chang opened the door, she noticed that Chang Guomin was holding a small red notebook, a notebook she recognized.

Marriage certificate? Or divorce certificate?

Once everyone was inside, they snatched the small booklet while Chang Guomin wasn't looking. Upon opening it, they found a freshly issued divorce certificate, dated today.

"You're divorced?" The surprised, high-pitched voice silenced the entire Chang family, and all eyes turned to Chang Guomin, demanding an explanation.

"Neither of your two children want to live with you? And you even gave the old house to Song Huizhen?"

She flipped to the agreement in the little red book, and briefly explained its contents. Her anger at her son's lack of assertiveness made Chang Xiaogu want to tear the agreement to shreds.

"How could you let Song Huizhen take Chang Jing and Chang Ling away? Brother, what are you thinking? How could you abandon your children?"

"Amin, come here."

Grandpa Chang tapped his pipe, the resounding sound striking Chang Guomin's heart. If Grandma Chang controlled Chang Guomin through her son's filial piety, then Grandpa Chang controlled Chang Jing through his imposing presence.

Chang Guomin had never received a smile from his grandfather since he was a child, which instilled in him a deep fear of his grandfather.

"dad."

Chang Guomin stood respectfully with his head bowed in front of Old Master Chang, like a primary school student who had made a mistake.

"Confess how much high-interest loan you borrowed for gambling."

Even a casual remark made ordinary citizens stammer for a long time, as if they were afraid to speak because they hadn't organized their thoughts.
