Chapter 31 Confessing I'm Not Having Children

"Summer's almost over and you're still buying a short-sleeved shirt? Humph!" Old Xu said disdainfully when he saw the clothes in his wife's hands.

Granny Liu rolled her eyes at him, then said to her third son, "Don't worry about your dad. Wear it or don't, it's up to him. If you don't want it, I'll take it to your third aunt. Just a few days ago, she was saying that your third uncle couldn't find many good clothes."

"Why are you giving my things to the third brother? Give them to me, and don't give them to anyone else." Old Xu got off the table, took his clothes, and stuffed them into the wardrobe.

Granny Liu ignored him, pulled her third son to sit down, and asked in a low voice, "Xuemei has given birth, hasn't she? What are you going to do?"

Xu Minghan handed the snacks he bought from the bag to his daughter, patted her head, and said, "Take these and eat them with your brothers. Dad and Grandma have something to talk about."

Xu Panpan nodded obediently and ran off to find her brothers with her short legs.

Xu Minghan watched his daughter walk away before returning to the house. He looked at his parents and said seriously, "She was born on the eighth day of the eighth lunar month. She's a girl. I just went to the township to pay the fine today, and she's registered in the household. We won't have any more children. Two daughters are just fine."

No sooner had he finished speaking than Old Man Xu glared at him with wide eyes and shouted, "You're not having children? Are you going to be called childless? Your mother and I will be too ashamed to face anyone."

Granny Liu stepped forward and punched his arm a few times, "You think you're so loud? Are you afraid no one will hear you?"

Old Xu shrank his neck and muttered to himself, "He's not afraid even though he doesn't have a son, so why should I be afraid?"

Xu Minghan sighed and explained, "Mom and Dad, the country says that boys and girls are the same. I've also figured it out. Rather than hiding and being penniless just to have a son, it's better to raise both children well. If they become successful, it's the same."

"Girls will get married sooner or later and become someone else's family. When you get old, you won't get anything. Let's see if you cry then."

Old Xu was still not satisfied. His third son just didn't understand his good intentions. He was only thinking of him. Could his daughter take care of him in his old age?

Xu Minghan knew that no matter how much he said now, his father would not understand. The deeply ingrained ideas of his generation could not be changed in a short time.

So she changed her approach, saying, "Dad, don't worry. Xuemei and I will work hard to earn money and then find a son-in-law who will live with us."

"What's so great about a son-in-law who lives with his wife's family? I..." Old Xu wanted to say something, but his wife glared at him, and he immediately fell silent. Whether he had children or not was up to him; he already had five sons anyway.

Granny Liu could tell that her third son was serious, so she stopped trying to persuade him.

In her opinion, it doesn't matter if it's a boy or a girl, since the Xu family doesn't lack grandsons anyway.

"You can decide for yourselves. You're all adults, so we don't need to worry about you too much." Granny Liu thought that they were almost thirty years old, and she couldn't keep following them around saying things.

"Mom, don't worry, Xuemei and I have made up our minds. Besides, I have a stall in Tianshui City now, and the income is pretty good. When your son makes a lot of money, I will definitely bring you to live with us."

Grandma Liu waved her hand, "We'll leave it to you. As long as you're doing well, that's all that matters. Your father and I are used to living in the countryside; we're not comfortable in the city."

“If you won’t go, I will. I’ve never lived in a city apartment before!” Old Xu said hurriedly. He had lived in this dilapidated house his whole life and wanted to live in a new house.

Granny Liu glanced at him and said, "You won't get any farmland to cultivate in the city. You can only wander around the house every day. You're not as free as you are in the village."

Upon hearing this, Old Xu hesitated. He had cultivated this land all his life; he couldn't do without it.

"Then I'd better not. Wait until you make money, then demolish the old house and build a new one for me!" Old Xu still couldn't forget about the new house.

Xu Minghan readily agreed, "Dad, just wait! The new house will be ready soon."

But don't go spreading rumors outside. I'm still borrowing money from them. What if they all think I've made money and ask me for it back?

Xu Minghan is currently burdened with tens of thousands of yuan in debt, which he cannot repay in the short term.

"We know, we know. We understand that wealth should not be flaunted," Old Man Xu and Granny Liu quickly replied.

"How many days are you coming back this time?" After finishing her business, Granny Liu started thinking about what things she could give her third son to take with him. Everything costs money when you're away from home, so every penny saved counts.

"I'm leaving tomorrow morning. Closing the stalls over there for even one day means losing a lot of money."

"Then you should leave today! Making money is the priority." Old Xu immediately urged him to leave after hearing this, wanting him to focus on making more money to build a new house for him.

Granny Liu rolled her eyes at him; he was really obsessed with money.

"Ignore your dad, stay as long as you want."

Xu Minghan already knew what kind of person his father was, so he didn't care what he said.

"Going back today is fine. By the way, Mom, my younger brother is helping out at my place now. He still has more than a month's salary tied up at the factory. Dad, go and collect it when you have time!"

As Xu Minghan was leaving, Xu Mingjiang thought that he didn't know when he would go back, and he was afraid that the wages he kept at the factory would be hard to say if he left them for too long. He thought it would be better to let his father collect them.

"Okay, I'll go tomorrow." Old Xu got excited at the mention of money.

"How did Xiao Wu end up at your place? Your Aunt Wang said before that there was a girl in town who had taken a liking to Xiao Wu, and that her family was very rich. Now that this has happened, it's probably all over."

Granny Liu still felt it was a bit of a pity; it was such a good thing!

Xu Minghan comforted her, "Mom, being a live-in son-in-law isn't that easy. If it really works out, they might just stop letting Xiao Wu contact you. You'll lose a son for nothing. Don't you think you're losing out?"

"What a loss, what a huge loss! I told you this wouldn't work, but your mother insisted. Luckily, it fell through." Old Xu said something nice this time.

Xu Minghan knew that although his father was stingy and loved money, he was the first person in his previous life to oppose Xiao Wu becoming a live-in son-in-law, thinking that the child would suffer and have a hard life. And indeed, he was right.

Married for over twenty years, my former sister-in-law only visited my parents-in-law once right after we got married, and she rarely came afterward.

It's one thing if she doesn't come herself, but she also won't let her two children and Xiao Wu come. Anyway, it's a complete mess.

Granny Liu chuckled and said, "I was just saying, just saying."

"By the way, Mom, could you help me pack Panpan's clothes? I'm taking her to Tianshui City this afternoon so she can go to school there." Xu Minghan thought it would be fine to leave this afternoon, as he was also a little worried about his family.

"Why did you take Panpan away too? What's the point of her going to school? She's only a few years old, she's too young! You two just focus on making money, leave the children at home for me to take care of, and you can bring the younger one back too, I'll take care of her for you."

Granny Liu wondered how her husband and his wife would make money while taking care of a baby. She figured she'd better work hard herself.
