Chapter 18: On the Eve of Going to the Countryside (VI)
"If you can't figure it out, don't think about it. Just follow your heart and time will give me the answer."
Lu Xiaoxiao suddenly felt enlightened. Just as she was about to tell her grandfather that she understood, she suddenly felt a chill in her body, and then she woke up with a shake.
It turned out that she was dreaming before. When Lu Xiaoxiao returned home, she was in a bad mood and did not light the coal stove. She fell asleep without covering herself with a quilt, so she woke up from the cold.
She thought of what her grandfather said in the dream, and she felt full of courage and fighting spirit, as if nothing could defeat her.
Lu Xiaoxiao looked at the time and it was already past eight o'clock in the evening. She lit the coal stove and boiled a pot of water. She took out a cup of malted milk and took a sip. She felt her whole body warmed up. Then she took out a small cream cake from the space and ate it. Sweet food would make people feel better.
Lu Xiaoxiao thought about going to Uncle Zhang's house tomorrow, and she wondered what should she bring?
After thinking about it, she decided to take a pound of fatty pork belly, Xifeng liquor bought at the department store today, and a pound of egg cake, and said that she had bought them at the supply and marketing cooperative early in the morning.
The next morning, Lu Xiaoxiao got up early, had breakfast, packed her things, and at about nine o'clock, she carried her things to Uncle Zhang's house.
It was Aunt Zhang who opened the door. When she saw that the visitor was Lu Xiaoxiao, she welcomed her in warmly.
When Aunt Zhang saw what she brought, she immediately said with an unhappy face: "Child, it's good that you're here, why bring anything? Auntie is not a stranger, so there's no need to be so polite. Don't come to Auntie's house next time if you do this again."
Lu Xiaoxiao heard Aunt Zhang smiling and replied: "Aunt, I understand. I'm coming to your house for lunch at noon, so just treat it as an extra dish."
Uncle Zhang came back at noon and prepared to eat. Aunt Zhang kept picking food for her and said that she was too thin and should eat more.
Uncle Zhang drank the wine she brought. She saw him narrowing his eyes in pleasure with every sip. Lu Xiaoxiao finished her lunch in such a warm atmosphere.
After dinner, Sister Fang went to the kitchen to wash the dishes, her aunt was cleaning the table, and Uncle Zhang sat face to face with her.
Zhang De raised his eyebrows when he saw Lu Xiaoxiao hesitated to speak, and then said teasingly: "Little girl, just say what you want to say. If you want to say something, don't be afraid of holding yourself back."
Seeing him like this, she made up her mind and said, "I've signed up to go to the countryside and will leave tomorrow." The room instantly became quiet. Before the aunt could speak excitedly, Uncle Zhang asked calmly, "Tell me why you did this."
Seeing him ask this, Lu Xiaoxiao could only answer honestly: "My father told me that their death was most likely not an accident, but someone was targeting our family, so I wanted to stay in the countryside for a few years and come back when I grow up."
As Lu Xiaoxiao was talking, she felt Zhang De staring at her. Seeing Zhang De staring at her, Lu Xiaoxiao also stared at Zhang De. After a while, Lu Xiaoxiao saw Zhang De suddenly burst into laughter, saying that he was worthy of being the child of those two people.
She waited until Zhang De had laughed enough before she heard Zhang De say that even if she had not signed up to go to the countryside, he would arrange it for her after a while. This was something her father had told him a long time ago as a precaution.
After hearing Zhang De's words, Lu Xiaoxiao admired the original owner's father even more. He was definitely a capable man as he could make such arrangements without knowing the future.
Afterwards, Zhang De asked her where she was going to the countryside. He said that it just so happened that the original owner's father and his sworn brother worked in the public security bureau of the city where she was going to the countryside. He would call him to inform him and ask him to pick her up on the day and arrange her affairs there.
After Lu Xiaoxiao and Zhang De finished their discussion, Aunt Zhang finally realized what was happening. She said anxiously, "What a sin! How can you go to the countryside when you are so young? What are you going there for? Why can't you stay in the city? Let's go and tell him that he can't go."
Seeing Aunt Zhang like this, Lu Xiaoxiao felt warm in her heart, and she held her hand and said coquettishly, "Aunt, once things are decided, they cannot be changed. You don't know how good the place I'm going to is. Everyone says that you can beat roe deer with sticks, scoop fish with ladles, and pheasants fly into the rice pot. It's much better than the city. I can even send you meat when the time comes."
When Aunt Zhang heard this, she was both angry and amused, and didn't know what to say.
Finally, Zhang De asked if the things were packed. If they were not packed, she would ask Aunt Zhang to help her pack them, and then send them to the rural destination by post tomorrow. When she arrived, the things would also arrive. So the afternoon was spent packing things.
