Chapter 46: Going to the Market (I)
Lu Xiaoxiao looked outside through the window and found that the yard was covered with white snow. She remembered that she wanted to make a snowman today, but she was so busy that she almost forgot about it.
Lu Xiaoxiao went to the bedroom and put on a down jacket and down pants, a pair of thick cotton shoes and cotton gloves, wrapping herself tightly so that she would not catch a cold.
Lu Xiaoxiao opened the door of the main room and a cool breeze blew in. She felt so cold that her neck shrank. Then she realized that she had forgotten to wear a scarf, so she went back to the room and put it on before going out to the yard.
Lu Xiaoxiao saw the depth of her footprints on the ground and estimated that they were about three or four centimeters deep. It seemed that it snowed quite heavily last night.
Lu Xiaoxiao grabbed a handful of snow and rolled it into a ball. Then she rolled it on the snow. Soon a snowball the size of a basketball was ready. This would serve as the snowman's head.
Lu Xiaoxiao rolled out another small snowball with her hands and rolled it on the ground. This time the snowball was three times larger than the first one. She rolled the snowball to the center of the yard, then picked up the small snowball on the ground and installed it on the big snowball, so that the frame of the snowman was ready.
Lu Xiaoxiao returned to the house and found two pieces of charcoal from the stove to make eyes for the snowman, then found two branches from the firewood pile to make hands for the snowman, and finally took out a carrot from the space to make a nose for the snowman.
Lu Xiaoxiao admired the snowman she made and thought it was pretty nice. When she was about to make another one, she heard someone knocking on the yard door. She wondered in her mind who would come to see her on such a snowy day.
When Lu Xiaoxiao opened the gate, she saw Aunt Cauliflower standing at her door, so she quickly invited her into the yard.
Aunt Caihua saw the little snowman in the yard and smiled, "This snowman is round and plump and looks festive. It's only you kids who are interested in making it. If I were to make it, I wouldn't be able to stand the cold."
After hearing what Aunt Caihua said, Lu Xiaoxiao smiled. Then she invited Aunt Caihua to sit on the kang in the main room before answering, "I was bored staying in the house for too long. When I saw the thick snow outside, I thought of making a snowman to play with."
After Lu Xiaoxiao finished speaking, she turned around and went to the kitchen to get an enamel cup, added some white sugar to the cup, picked up the kettle and poured in hot water, then handed it to Aunt Caihua and said, "Drink a cup of hot water to warm yourself up first."
Aunt Caihua took a sip from the cup. The sweet water must have a lot of sugar in it. She felt satisfied and said to Lu Xiaoxiao, "You are such a wasteful child. I don't want to drink such expensive sugar water. Just drink some boiled water. Don't do this next time."
After hearing what Aunt Caihua said, Lu Xiaoxiao just smiled at her without answering.
Aunt Caihua said helplessly after seeing Lu Xiaoxiao's expression: "You are such a sly kid, don't think I don't know what you are thinking."
Seeing that her little trick was ruthlessly exposed by Aunt Caihua, Lu Xiaoxiao felt a little hot on her face, so she quickly changed the subject and asked, "Aunt, what is the matter with you coming to see me today?"
"If you hadn't reminded me, I would have almost forgotten. I came here today to tell you that people from several nearby villages will gather together to hold a small market tomorrow. I came to ask if you want to go tomorrow."
Lu Xiaoxiao was surprised when she heard Aunt Caihua's words, so she quickly asked, "Isn't private trading prohibited now? How can we still open a market?"
"Well, there is no other way. Now everyone is short of many things at home. Without tickets, you can't buy anything. The New Year is coming soon.
