Hospital

Hospital

The constant noise of machinery filled her ears, and the strong smell of medicine filled her nostrils. Yu Xi guessed that she had been taken to the hospital. She desperately wanted to open her eyes, but her eyelids were too heavy, and she couldn't open them no matter how hard she struggled.

She was like a ship anchored, firmly anchored to the shore, unable to move no matter what, and never able to sail away again.

There were no cries, no hurried footsteps, and no crisp sound of scalpels being placed into instrument cases; only the constant hum of machines filled the air, making it as noisy as a morning market.

A woman with short, wavy hair peered through the crack in the door, but the heavy door was tightly shut, making it impossible to see what was happening inside. She turned and grabbed a passing nurse, asking, "How was the person when they were brought here?"

"Which one are you asking about?" The entire hospital was temporarily locked down, allowing entry but not exit. The nurses knew to some extent that the person lying in the ICU was no ordinary person, so they didn't dare to speak rashly.

Sun Shuhan leaned closer to her, glanced around to make sure no one was watching, and whispered, "The woman who was brought here five nights ago, she was very young and pregnant. How is she?"

The nurse knew she was referring to Yu Xi and said, "If she can pull through, she'll be fine. Luckily, her husband is there to protect her. The baby in her belly is alright, but it just had a heart transplant and won't be coming out for a while."

After speaking, the nurse turned and left to continue with her work.

Sun Shuhan swallowed hard and muttered under her breath, "He's really lucky to be alive. He's such a troublesome jinx."

"Oh!" She was about to ask Meng Chou about his condition again when the nurse had already walked away. She had only taken two steps and was about to sit down when she saw Meng Yun running towards her in a panic.

"Mom, how are my older brother and sister-in-law?"

Sun Shuhan picked up her handbag and threw it at his chest. "You heartless bastard! Your mother has been here for two days, two whole days without going home. Why didn't you even ask how I was doing?"

Meng Yun gasped for breath, pressed down on her shoulder, and forced her to sit on the bench. "Mom, what time is it? Stop making a scene."

“Dad kept telling me not to come. I begged him for days before he finally agreed to let me come. Everything is a complete mess with Jin Xuexiao.”

"Now all the media outlets are camped out outside the hospital, eager to find out something. I barely managed to sneak in without them."

Sun Shuhan lifted her foot and grabbed his ear. "You brat, you're siding with outsiders! Look at my dark circles!"

"You come here and immediately ask about that jinx, are you trying to drive me crazy?"

Seeing her clutching her chest, Meng Yun immediately guessed what she was about to say. She slipped past her and went inside. "Mom, I'm going to check on my brother and sister-in-law. You sit down and rest."

Sun Shuhan was just putting on an act. She knew very well that even if Meng Chou and Yu Xi didn't die this time, with their injuries like this, who could guarantee that they would really wake up again?

The things she arranged did not achieve the desired effect, but they did turn out the way she had hoped.

After taking only a few steps, Meng Yun stopped in front of the heavy door. He stood there steadily, behind the heavy iron door was the person he had always been concerned about.

However, he is now unable to see her in person and knows nothing about her situation.

He could evade his father's scolding and reporters who wanted to pry into his life, but he couldn't escape the worry in his heart for her.

As night fell and the light gradually dimmed, he stood at the intersection of light and shadow, half of his face hidden in darkness, making it impossible to discern his expression. However, his eyes were already glistening with tears, and large teardrops fell onto the floor.

He remained silent, his back to Sun Shuhan and the hurried passersby, quickly wiping away the tears from the corners of his eyes.

At this moment, even he himself couldn't tell whether his feelings for Yu Xi were simply a desire to steal Meng Chou's exclusive love, or genuine affection.

He struggled with this contradiction, clenching his fist and slamming it heavily against the heavy iron door. The attending surgeon, who had learned of his arrival, was startled by his actions.

The iron gate made a dull thud. Meng Yun had his head down. He heard footsteps approaching and looked up.

"You must be Mr. Meng Chou's younger brother?" the doctor, wearing a light blue mask, asked.

Meng Yun quickly regained her composure and replied, "Yes, I can say I'm his younger brother."

"I regret to inform you that your brother passed away when he was brought to the hospital. Mr. Meng has repeatedly told me not to tell that lady over there about this, but the signature form for family receiving the body still needs to be signed by Mr. Meng's immediate family."

"I haven't been able to see Mr. Meng. Since you're here today, please sign this document. It will give us some closure."

When Meng Yun heard the news, she was not saddened; in fact, she felt a sense of relief.

The person who had been opposing him all along was finally gone, and everything was slowly returning to his hands.

But what he didn't expect was that Yu Xi would become the only change in this stable situation.

"No problem," Meng Yun blurted out, but then thought about it and felt it wasn't quite right. After all, it was her nominal brother who had died, so she should at least act a little sad.

He gathered his emotions and spoke heavily, "My brother was so young, how could he..."

The doctor, accustomed to witnessing life and death, couldn't show much sympathy, only offering a mournful "Please accept my condolences" through his mask.

"What about my sister-in-law? Is she alright?" The question that had been weighing on his mind finally came to him when the opportunity arose.

"She is still under observation and there is no immediate risk to her life. Your brother's heart transplant was also a successful match for her, and according to various indicators, she is adapting well to the heart."

Meng Yun's hand holding the pen paused, and without noticing, the pen tip stabbed hard into the report, leaving a thick ink stain.

"So the heart that's beating right now is actually my brother's?"

The doctor nodded. "Yes, your brother came for a matching test three months ago. At that time, I didn't understand why, but it all became clear the day they had the accident."

"Your brother really loves her." The doctor couldn't say anything more, as the competition and sabotage in the business world were often difficult to explain clearly.

Capital will only show you the side it wants you to see.

Meng Yun didn't reply. His phone, hidden in his jacket, buzzed. He said goodbye to the doctor and went to the stairwell to answer the call. A sharp, decisive voice came from the other end: "Meng Yun! I agreed to let you leave the house, but I didn't agree to let you go to the hospital. Who gave you the right to go there on your own?"

Upon learning that he had rushed to the hospital, Meng Jinxian immediately called him, saying, "You know perfectly well that your brother and the others are in trouble. At this critical juncture, even the slightest disturbance could affect the group's shares."

"Dad, are you worried about the shares, or are you worried that I will take my brother's things?" Meng Yun asked directly. He knew in his heart that Meng Jinxian had never cared about him as his son, and his heart and eyes were full of Meng Chou.

Even though Meng Chou caused a scene by getting together with Yu Xi and severing his father-son relationship, Meng Yun knew very well that the old man had secretly helped Meng Chou quite a bit in private.

Meng Yun had witnessed his attention and love for Meng Chou since childhood, but she had never received such attention in return.

That's why he was so desperate to take anything that belonged to Meng Chou.

Meng Jinxian seemed to have been struck by a knife, and after a long while, he continued, "I have always treated you two brothers equally, and I have never shown any particular favoritism towards either of you."

Meng Yun sneered, "Dad, do you even believe what you're saying?"

"Forget it, let's not talk about this anymore. I didn't come to the hospital to see him, I came to see Yu Xi."

Meng Jinxian's warning voice came through, "Let me tell you, don't think I don't know what you're up to. But if you really dare to do it, you know what I'll do."

"I won't be as ungrateful as you." Meng Yun deliberately brought up the shameful incident from back then, and hurriedly hung up the phone before Meng Jinxian's curses could be heard.

The mechanical sounds in the ward disappeared, and the surroundings were eerily quiet, with only the occasional chirping of birds.

Yu Xi didn't know how long she had been lying there, nor where she was. The only time she felt anything was when she was pushed from one ward to another. The wheels of the hospital bed rubbed against the ground, and the sounds of hurried footsteps and noisy conversations all rushed into her mind.

But she still couldn't open her eyes. She used all her strength, but no matter what she did, she couldn't make a sound or see anything.

She had only one obsession: to live, and to live to see Meng Chou again.

I absolutely must survive.

She was afraid that if she left like this, she would never see Meng Chou again.

Suddenly, like a ship adrift in the darkness, she was greeted by the light before dawn. The light grew brighter and brighter until she couldn't help but squint to observe what lay ahead.

Meng Chou's outline gradually became clear, and he appeared right in front of him.

Yu Xi rushed over excitedly, hugged him tightly, buried her face in his chest, and cried, "Why haven't you come to see me for so long? Do you know how scared I was?"

She suddenly stood up, reached out and turned him around, carefully stroking his back. "Is the injury deep? Besides the injury on your back where you shielded me from the glass, where else are you bleeding?"

Meng Chou obediently cooperated with her examination, smiling as he said, "Little Fish, my injuries are all healed. Look for yourself."

As he spoke, he pulled his shirt off halfway, revealing his muscular back. "Look, you can't see a single scar. Don't be sad because of me."

Yu Xi's hands trembled as she touched his back again. She clearly remembered that it had been a bloody mess, but now it was as if she had never experienced any of these things, without even a single scar.

She circled around Meng Chou, her gaze landing on his chest, where a long, glaring suture line stood out.

"How did it damage your heart?"

Hearing her anxious tone, Meng Chou shrugged easily, "These are all minor issues. I just hope Xiaoyu can live a good life."

Upon hearing this, Yu Xi immediately understood. She held Meng Chou's hands, which were now devoid of warmth, their palms icy cold. They were no longer the hands that had once enveloped and warmed her in the winter.

"Are you..."

Before Yu Xi could finish speaking, Meng Chou interrupted her, "Xiao Yu, live well for me, and live happily with this little one."

Meng Chou's gaze remained fixed on her the entire time, as his figure slowly disappeared from sight.

Yu Xi cried out in panic, "Don't go!"

It was this shout that woke her up completely. As she opened her eyes, a large expanse of white rushed in—a common device in the hospital.

"Where is Meng Chou?" This was the first question she asked after seeing Meng Yun push open the door and enter.
