It was him

It was him

“Mr. Meng, I just arrived and you opened the door.”

These words made Meng Yun's clenched right hand relax instantly. He still maintained a calm expression and smiled naturally, "I thought you had arrived a long time ago and waited outside the door for a long time."

His words were undoubtedly a further confirmation and a test. The ambiguous smile on his face conveyed no kindness or warmth whatsoever, and even sent chills down one's spine.

Seeing his reaction, the nanny dared not lie. She lowered her head, her thumb rubbing the lunchbox, and said, "Mr. Meng, I really just arrived. I arrived at the agreed time and I wasn't late."

Meng Yun laughed out loud this time, turned around and walked out of the ward, not forgetting to remind him, "Remember to call me when she wakes up, I'm going downstairs for a walk."

"OK."

Meng Yun walked out, choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Just as he stepped out of the door, he saw Meng Jinxian still on the phone not far away.

He didn't approach, but simply stood at the doorway, quietly waiting for the latter.

Meng Yun clearly remembered that when she was a child, she excitedly ran to Meng Jinxian with her perfect score test paper, wanting to tell him the good news. He just glanced at her coldly and then said, "Is this something to be proud of? Look at how many times your brother has gotten perfect scores. When has he ever come to me to brag?"

"He's already so arrogant after winning just this once. This child is nothing like me." After saying that, Meng Jinxian continued listening, as if the test paper that slipped from Meng Yun's hand and his disappointment were nothing to Meng Jinxian.

No one expected that their words would come true.

The current situation undoubtedly overlapped with and repeated the events in his memory. He clearly understood that if he went there now, Meng Jinxian would, just like before, signal him not to speak.

"Yes, it's a boy."

"Whether it's a boy or a girl, as long as it's A-Chou's child, I will make him the future heir of the group. This is what I owe A-Chou and his mother, and this is the only thing I can use to repay him."

"All I have left is this money and the experience I've gained over the years. These are the only things I can give him."

"Half of all of this was originally won thanks to A-Chou's mother's dowry. If it weren't for her, I, Meng Jinxian, wouldn't have achieved what I have today."

Meng Yun wasn't too far away from him, and all these words fell into his ears. They were so unfamiliar to him that the more he listened, the more it was as if the world had pressed the mute button on him. He couldn't hear anything clearly anymore and could only see Meng Jinxian's back as he walked back and forth.

"So, in his heart, I wasn't even as good as a newborn child. I worked my way up from the bottom by his side, just so that one day he would acknowledge me." Meng Yun muttered to herself, then suddenly laughed coldly, "Now it all seems so ridiculous."

"Why did he have everything from birth? Why could he win Dad's approval so easily, while I tried for so long and couldn't?"

"Just because he is Meng Chou's son?"

A hint of red appeared at the corner of Meng Yun's eyes as he stared intently at Meng Jinxian, who was still solemnly discussing these matters with the person on the other end of the phone.

After an unknown amount of time, a light drizzle began to fall from the sky, and a layer of white mist gradually spread around.

The first spring rain of the year fell silently, and Yu Xi woke up just as the raindrops hit the ground.

The increased humidity in the air was immediately noticeable to the woman who had just undergone surgery. Looking at the postpartum nanny busy tidying the house, her throat was dry, and she managed to squeeze out a sentence, "Who are you?"

"Ms. Yu, you're awake. I'm the postpartum nanny that Mr. Meng hired to take care of you." As she spoke, she picked up the warm water that had been prepared on the table and walked towards Yu Xi. "I noticed your lips were chapped, so I dipped a cotton swab in some water and dabbed them on."

"You must be thirsty now, right? The water's warm, want some?"

"Thank you." Yu Xi reached out to take the water, but the nanny had already brought it to her lips and said with a smile, "There's no reason for someone who has just given birth to fetch water for themselves. Just rest well for a while, and leave these things to me."

This was the second person, besides Meng Chou, to take such good care of her since she was a child. Yu Xi felt a little uncomfortable, so she quickly finished her water and lay back down.

In the instant she turned her head, her gaze fell on the baby who was wrapped up tightly. She asked, "Has anyone named him yet?"

The nanny shook her head. "Mr. Meng didn't mention anything when he left, so it probably hasn't happened yet."

Fine raindrops pattered against the window. Yu Xi looked up at the glass that was gradually being blurred by the radiator and murmured, "It's raining again."

"Yes, this is the first rain of spring. They say spring rain is as precious as oil, so it's not easy for it to rain."

The loud sound of tires screeching against the road during the emergency braking at the scene of the car accident instantly echoed in Yu Xi's ears, and the bloody scene flashed through her mind. "I hate rainy days, I really hate them."

"Let's name this child Meng Qingze."

Ze can refer to rain and dew.

The character 晴 (qíng) is exactly the opposite of it.

It's a contradiction, much like Yu Xi's current mood.

"Qingze, Qingze." The nanny kept repeating the name. "These two characters make up a nice-sounding name. I'm from the countryside and haven't had much schooling, but I know that 'Qing' and 'Ze' mean both sunny days and rainy days."

"President Yu, please forgive my bluntness, but isn't this a diametrically opposed combination?"

Yu Xi didn't explain much, only saying lightly, "That's how it has to be. I just want to remember that day. If he hadn't protected me, this child wouldn't have been able to come into this world."

Before the nanny arrived, Meng Jinxian's subordinates had given her instructions, briefly explaining Yu Xi's current situation. Knowing that Yu Xi was suffering, she comforted her, saying, "This rain will eventually stop, and after the rain, a rainbow will appear."

"Maybe." Yu Xi tilted her head and quietly watched the raindrops slowly slide down the window, just like that time in the rainstorm when the raindrops on the car window appeared and fell so quickly.

All memories of rain, from the moment Meng Chou left, became an inescapable dampness in her mind, a dampness that gathered into a raging flood, threatening to engulf her.

The low pressure brought by the rain already made people feel stuffy, and Yu Xi was even more acutely aware of it. This feeling was pressing down on her and stinging her, making her already weakening nerves tense up again.

The rainy weather lasted for a whole week, and everything seemed damp. The air was heavy with moisture, and the branches outside the window were still bare, without sprouting any new leaves. It was supposed to be spring, but the desolate scenery felt more like autumn.

Because she had just given birth, the windows in the house were almost never opened this week, and the air in the house was changed by the ventilation system.

Every time Yu Xi woke up in the afternoon, she could always see the corner of the curtain swaying gently. At first, when she noticed it, the swaying was so small that she wouldn't even notice it unless she looked closely.

In the following days, perhaps seeing that she had noticed, and not being afraid, he gradually increased the amplitude of his swaying, as if afraid that she wouldn't notice.

On the sixth day, while the nanny was out buying groceries, Yu Xi asked, "Are you a ghost?"

“I’ve noticed you’ve been playing with the curtain fabric the past few days.”

After she finished speaking, she looked around, and images of ghosts throwing things at people in horror movies flashed through her mind. As a result, she became wary.

However, nothing flew towards her for a long time. The room was quiet, and she could even hear Meng Qingze's breathing as she slept.

Yu Xi had held onto a sliver of hope, but after receiving no reply, she picked up a magazine with a sense of disappointment. As she looked down and then up again, the corner of the curtain by the window fluttered once more, lifting it quite a bit in response to her words. She excitedly ran over, not even bothering to put on her shoes, her bare feet landing on the cold floor.

Meng Chou, who was still trying his best to shake the curtains and blow the corners of the curtains with all his might, saw this and instantly floated over to her. His brows furrowed, and his words were full of concern and reproach, "Why did you run over without wearing shoes? You just gave birth to a baby, you'll catch a cold and get sick. Go back!"

He was so anxious to pull Yu Xi back that he forgot he was a spirit. The moment his fingertips touched her, they passed straight through her shoulder, and Yu Xi happened to be running this way, so he just passed right through her.

Like dust in the air, it is invisible and intangible, yet it exists.

Yu Xi stopped in her tracks and noticed that the curtain had stopped swaying. So she asked again, "A-Chou, is that you? You came to see me, didn't you?"

"You've always been here, haven't you?"

Meng Chou swiftly floated to the curtains, intending to blow on the corner to reply to her, when he suddenly heard the words the ghost messenger had given him before his arrival.

He had gone to great lengths to extend his time with Yu Xi, as he was about to leave her. Giving her hope again now, only to disappear once more, would undoubtedly be another blow to her.

Meng Chou desperately wanted to answer 'yes,' but reason, driven by madness, gave him the answer 'no.'

He struggled on the edge of his emotions, like a trapped beast, struggling to say goodbye properly, but unable to utter the words of leaving.

Because they cared too much and loved too much, they couldn't bring themselves to say the words of farewell.

Nothing is more painful than seeing your loved one right in front of you, yet being unable to get close to them.

Yu Xi waited, standing right next to the curtains, refusing to leave. She didn't know how long she had been standing there or how long she had been waiting.

When the nanny returned from grocery shopping, she opened the door and saw her standing there. After a loud "Oh my!" followed by hurried footsteps, she exclaimed.

"Why are you standing barefoot by the window? Aren't you cold?"

"You can't do that, it'll cause long-term health problems that will be very difficult to treat later," the nanny said, bringing her shoes to put them on.

Yu Xi was like a doll being manipulated, obediently letting her put on her shoes and let her pull her back to sit on the bed.

"You can't run around barefoot next time. What would you like to eat, Mr. Yu? I'll make it for you."

Yu Xi didn't answer her question, but instead said, "Have you ever seen that curtain move when the window is closed?"

The nanny looked up in the direction the woman was pointing and asked, "Is Mr. Yu referring to those curtains?"

Yu Xi nodded, but saw a look of fear in the latter's eyes.
