Chapter 1: The Journey Begins, Muyun County

"Sister Tang, don't sleep!" The boy skillfully pushed open the window and helped the girl on the bed roll up the bed curtains.

The sunlight shone brightly on Tang Nian. She frowned, pulled the blanket over herself, rolled over, wrapped herself up like a caterpillar, covered her head, and continued to sleep.

The boy didn't rush to shout again, but instead leaned against the window and watched the people coming and going below the inn.

After a while, Tang Nian seemed to wake up a bit. She rolled around on the bed a few times before finally freeing herself from the covers.

Looking at the boy sunbathing, Tang Nian grabbed her messy long hair in distress.

"Bifang, you brat, close the window right now!"

Bi Fang stuck out his tongue, quickly closed the window, turned around, and seemed to still have some resentment on his face, muttering to himself, "I told you to call me Ming Huan outside."

As a Bifang bird, Minghuan's favorite thing to do is sunbathe. Unfortunately, he is with a ferocious beast boss who doesn't like sunbathing, so he has to carry an umbrella when he goes out during the day.

Actually, Tang Nian can't be blamed for this. Xiangliu is a universally recognized ferocious beast. As the purest bloodline of the Xiangliu clan, even though her cultivation has reached a certain level, she still can't escape her fear of light. In addition...

Minghuan's whispers did not escape Tang Nian's ears, but Tang Nian just narrowed her eyes and did not say anything.

Even so, when Ming Huan saw Tang Nian's appearance, he couldn't help but shudder and quickly walked out the door, making sure to close it behind him.

Tang Nian smiled and shook her head: "This kid is still so afraid of me."

She stretched lazily, finished getting ready in the somewhat dimly lit room, stood in front of the window, and gently placed her hand on the windowpane.

She carefully pushed open a crack, and the sunlight shone directly on Tang Nian's somewhat pale face, making her squint.

As expected, with too much of her cultivation sealed by the Supreme God, even this light was still somewhat uncomfortable for her now.

Tang Nian closed the window, sat down in a chair, took out a glittering golden bead from her sleeve, examined it in her hand for a while, and then carefully put it away.

This is a merit bead given to her by the gods. It is said that once the power of the bead is fully accumulated, she can ascend to heaven. However, she must continuously help people in the world to obtain the power of the bead.

However, the Xiangliu clan has always believed that "human nature is inherently evil," and Tang Nian is no exception. In order to restrain her, the gods placed a curse on her, and she would be struck by lightning if she was not careful.

Even Tang Nian herself felt that it was a miracle that she had survived this long.

Tang Nian opened the door and saw Ming Huan walking towards her. Ming Huan was a baby bird she had rescued by chance. Tang Nian needed a little brother, and Ming Huan didn't want to leave, so she left him there.

Ming Huan was no longer as mischievous as before, and looked at Tang Nian with a serious expression.

"Looks like you've found something interesting."

Tang Nian knew from Ming Huan's expression that he had discovered something interesting.

Tang Nian was, after all, a ferocious beast, and not so sensitive to evil energy, but Ming Huan was different. Bi Fang belonged to the fire element, and was extremely sensitive to evil energy.

"I heard from the waiter downstairs that there's a strange place called Muyun County, fifty miles east of the city."

"How is it strange?" Tang Nian didn't think Ming Huan was the kind of person who would only say half of what he meant.

Ming Huan scratched his head sheepishly. In fact, he hadn't sensed anything amiss in the vicinity. He had only just overheard the waiter downstairs telling the other customers.

"Well... the waiter didn't say anything."

He cautiously looked up at Tang Nian's somewhat dark face, shuddered in fright, and added, "But I see that many Taoist masters have come to this city, and most of them are heading east."

Tang Nian nodded, indicating that she understood.

"Go and pack your things too. We need to get to Muyun County before dark."

The two traveled around without carrying much, and soon left the inn where they had been resting.

Tang Nian, dressed in white, held a white oil-paper umbrella and carried a sword on her back. Ming Huan, carrying a large bundle, jogged behind Tang Nian.

The unusual combination of the two drew glances from other travelers.

"Hey...look at those two over there!"

"This is... Master Tang and Young Master Ming?"

"Are you stupid? You can't tell just by looking at that outfit!"

"I can't even imagine it. First there was 'First Detective Xiang Liu,' and then there was the famous Master Tang. We've run into two such powerful figures. Could something really serious have happened in Muyun County?"

"Hey, what are you afraid of? Big things won't happen to people like us."

"Hey... stop talking, stop talking, Master Tang is looking this way."

...

Even though these people were speaking very quietly, Tang Nian heard every single word they said.

"The First Detective Xiang Liu?"

That's quite an arrogant title!

Because Tang Nian suddenly slowed down, Ming Huan didn't react in time and almost bumped into her.

He looked up, puzzled, and saw the smile on Tang Nian's lips. He couldn't help but shiver. Remembering what the group of people resting by the roadside had said, he suddenly felt sympathy for the top detective he had never met.

Why did he have to call himself Xiang Liu of all people, and then get caught by this Tang Zhenxiang Liu Mengshou Nian? Wasn't he just asking for trouble?

He quietly took two steps back to keep his distance from Tang Nian. After all, Tang Nian was not the Tang Grand Master who rid the people of evil in those people's mouths. He was a little afraid that Tang Nian might lose control and take her anger out on him.

There was only one official road between the small town where they had rested and Muyun County. And it seemed that because of Muyun County, this official road was full of carriages and pedestrians heading out. Originally, Tang Nian and his companion had planned to fly there, but now they could only obediently continue on their way.

The two hurried as fast as they could and arrived in Muyun County before sunset.

Standing at the foot of the city gate, Tang Nian looked back at the afterglow, put away the umbrella she had been holding all day, and felt the cool breeze blowing in her face.

"It seems that this Muyun County is quite interesting..."

Tang Nian's lips curled slightly, and her eyes gleamed with the light of someone eyeing prey. Clearly, Muyun County had successfully caught her attention.

Ming Huan stood behind Tang Nian, wrinkled his nose, and sneezed.

Tang Nian sensed it through the gust of wind, while Ming Huan actually saw it—

The vast city was shrouded in a thick layer of ghostly energy, making it impossible for even him to see what was happening inside.

Tang Nian can only perceive the evil aura of malevolent spirits, while Ming Huan can see all the evil symbols in the world.

He was somewhat worried that what they were encountering this time might be different from what they had encountered before, and that she seemed to have noticed nothing, or perhaps she had noticed but hadn't paid any attention.

"Sister Tang..."
