Chapter 2 First Encounter

Suddenly, he swallowed the words he hadn't yet uttered.

Tang Nian curiously glanced down at Ming Huan, but as it grew dark, she couldn't see his expression clearly. She was also eager to get into the city, so she assumed Ming Huan was just a little sensitive to things in the city and didn't think much of it.

The moment Tang Nian looked over, Ming Huan subtly put his hands behind his back, tightly gripping his right wrist with his left hand. His face turned slightly pale, and he gently shook his head, moving closer to Tang Nian.

After Tang Nian produced her official documents, she clearly saw the hope and joy in the eyes of the soldiers guarding the city. Without checking them further, she allowed Tang Nian and Ming Huan to enter the city.

She heard the people behind her arguing, apparently because Muyun County was no longer allowing people into the city after sunset. She paused for a moment, then continued walking into the city.

As dusk fell, the entire city seemed deserted, with not a single person to be seen on the streets.

All the houses had their doors and windows tightly shut, and it seemed that not even a single oil lamp was lit in any of them. The only bright spots in the entire city were the two inns, and it seemed that all the sounds in the city came from those two inns.

The inn's signboard was adorned with Bagua mirrors and peach wood swords for warding off evil, but these had no effect on Tang Nian.

After entering the inn, Tang Nian wrinkled her nose, looked around, then stepped back to the door, glanced at the Bagua mirror and the peach wood sword, before finally stepping into the inn.

Fortunately, Tang Nian had been adventuring in the mortal world a lot before, and both of the county's inns were fully booked. The celestial masters who stayed there recognized her and gave her two rooms.

Ming Huan simply told Tang Nian, took her luggage upstairs, and then locked himself in his room.

Tang Nian assumed that Ming Huan had been traveling for a long time and didn't ask any further questions. She sat in the inn and chatted with the Taoist masters who had come after hearing the news.

However, it's more accurate to say that she sat aside and listened to those celestial masters talk, and the topics of conversation were nothing more than the so-called "Number One Detective Xiang Liu" and the major events in Muyun County.

Although the Taoist priests were somewhat restrained and spoke in hushed tones because Tang Nian was sitting in the main hall, Tang Nian was still able to hear every word they said.

"Have you heard? The big event in Muyun County has even attracted Lord Lou!"

"Huh...? I only know Master Tang, who is this Lord Lou?"

"You don't know, do you? This Lord Lou is none other than the 'Number One Detective Xiang Liu,' Lord Lou Mu Lou!"

"How dare this Lord Lou refer to himself as 'Xiang Liu'? This Xiang Liu isn't..."

The man clearly didn't dare to continue speaking. Tang Nian's lips curled into a mocking smile as she picked up the teacup on the table to hide her smile.

This human race has really not improved at all; they are both afraid and flirting with death.

She subconsciously touched the black mark on her wrist to calm her agitated emotions and continued listening.

"Hey, this isn't what Lord Lou said himself, it's what those he helped said. Apparently, he was given this nickname because he acted too eccentrically."

Then the man began to recount Lou Mu's glorious history, which made Tang Nian wonder if Lou Mu might actually be Xiang Liu who had been living away from home.

"Isn't he afraid that Xiang Liu will come after him?" The man's voice was noticeably softer.

Several people around who heard this couldn't help but burst into laughter, causing everyone in the hall to turn around and look at them.

After apologizing to everyone, the group huddled together again.

"The Xiangliu clan has long been extinct! Besides, with those above them backing them up, how dare those big demons and monsters come to cause trouble in the human world? They're just small fry."

Tang Nian disagreed with this point. The Xiangliu clan and other ancient ferocious beasts were imprisoned in secret realms and could not be born. If it weren't for the Xiangliu clan, she would not have left her territory to come to the human world to suffer.

but……

Tang Nian squinted and carefully examined the group of people, tapping her finger lightly on the table.

Then, with a gentle lift of her hand, a needle flew from her hand and shot towards those people.

Tang Nian was still mindful of her limits; she only wanted to use the silver needles to scare these outspoken people. If she went too far, Heaven would not let her off the hook.

The silver needle stopped abruptly midway and fell to the ground without warning.

Tang Nian was startled. She turned her head and saw a man in white and a little girl in a pink dress. When Tang Nian looked over, the man in white chuckled and raised the teacup in his hand.

Tang Nian paused for a moment, then raised her teacup, drank it all in one gulp, and stopped looking at the man.

Is it human or demon?

Tang Nian couldn't tell the white-clad man's identity, but she could immediately recognize the girl's true form. She could even see that the girl's fox ears twitched involuntarily a few times when Tang Nian looked over, before tucking into her hair.

Qingqiu fox?

No wonder she smelled a fox scent as soon as she entered the inn. She thought there was something wrong with her sense of smell, so she went to check if there was something wrong with the Bagua mirror and the peach wood sword. But if it was a fox from Qingqiu, it would make sense. Only the foxes of Qingqiu could withstand these magical artifacts.

The girl's cultivation was probably insufficient; the three-tailed fox couldn't hide from her at all. But the man, someone who could make the Qingqiu fox willingly follow him, couldn't possibly be just an ordinary person.

The man's eyes were as clear as the sacred water of Kunlun Mountain, seemingly able to see through her inner thoughts.

Tang Nian subconsciously ruled out the man from the fox clan, but she didn't want to confront the Qingqiu foxes directly. After all, the relationship between the Qingqiu foxes and the Xiangliu clan had always been bad, and it would be a loss to escalate the conflict between the two clans.

It's just a pity about her needle.

Thinking about it, Tang Nian squinted and glanced at those few people who spoke without thinking.

The group of people shivered involuntarily, feeling as if they were being watched by something terrifying, but when they looked behind them, they found nothing.

The group exchanged glances, all seeing the fear in each other's eyes. After a moment of silence, they subtly changed the subject.

Tang Nian sneered and stopped paying attention to this side. Instead, she turned to a group of people at a table not far away. Judging from their attire, they didn't seem to have been attracted by the incident in Muyun County. They looked more like business people coming and going.

"I think we should leave Muyun County as soon as possible."

"Why don't we leave tonight?"

"Are you crazy? Everyone knows those four people all had their accidents at night!"

"With so many amulets hanging outside the inn and so many important figures inside, I think we should stay a few more days."

Speaking of the four people, Tang Nian noticed that one of the people who hadn't spoken until now trembled involuntarily. Although it was a very subtle movement, it didn't escape Tang Nian's notice.
