Chapter 26 The Man in Black

Lou Mu looked in the direction Tang Nian was pointing and saw a row of men in black standing on the roof.

The men in black leaped down from the rooftop in perfect unison, all wearing thick cloaks. Tang Nian counted them: ten people, plus the one who smashed the carriage, making a total of eleven.

No, they can't be called human beings.

Under the light of these lanterns, their shadows could not be seen.

Tang Nian wrapped her arms around Lou Mu's neck, reached into her sleeve and groped around for a while, then her face darkened.

Oh no! She only planned to see the Third Prince today, and she didn't bring enough exorcism talismans. What's more, she used two of them at the Third Prince's residence.

Lou Mu held Tang Nian with one hand and took out a folding fan from his waist with the other, calmly looking at the men in black who surrounded them.

"Who are you?" Lou Mu asked, his eyes scanning the situation before him.

He hadn't forgotten that he was carrying the wounded, and he didn't intend to fight for long; he wanted to find a chance to escape the street.

Unfortunately, the entire street was shrouded in a thin mist, as if trapped in a barrier, and the men in black slowly approached the two of them.

"Lord Lou, you are not our target. Hand over the woman behind you, and we may spare your life." The leader of the men in black spoke in a cold and stiff voice.

"Then let's fight."

The man in black moved at the sound, but Lou Mu dodged the punch with a quick sidestep.

Tang Nian exclaimed in surprise and quickly grabbed Lou Mu's shoulder to prevent herself from being thrown off.

This feels completely different from fighting with myself.

Lou Mu's folding fan snapped shut instantly, striking the assassin in the chest with a dull thud, and the assassin fell to the ground immediately. The other men in black launched a fierce attack, but Lou Mu moved with ghostly agility, switching between attack and defense in an instant, sometimes locked in a stalemate, sometimes moving with lightning speed.

However, these men in black were not human, and Lou Muguang could not harm them at all with his weapon and the little bit of magic power he possessed.

Even if knocked to the ground, they will instantly get up and continue fighting.

Tang Nian, clinging to Lou Mu's back, wanted to lend a hand. As she looked around, she unexpectedly discovered that there seemed to be another person on a rooftop not far away.

The man, seemingly afraid of being discovered, lay prone on a dark rooftop, peeking out with his head and peering in their direction.

Tang Nian had no choice but to abandon her idea of using the talisman to help. She quietly draped her hand and sleeve in front of Lou Mu and handed him the talisman from her sleeve: "There are people watching on the roof. Here's a ghost-repelling talisman for you."

Lou Mu naturally took the talisman from Tang Nian, casually stuck one on the fan handle, and stuffed the rest into his sleeve.

"Since someone's watching, you'd better stay on me and don't move." As he spoke, Lou Mu dodged another attack.

As he spun around, his rotating folding fan unleashed a series of fierce strikes, each blow delivering an unavoidable sense of impact.

This was tough on Tang Nian, who was clinging to his back.

"Why don't you put me down?" Tang Nian suggested, feeling dizzy from being carried on Lou Mu's back.

"Are you sure you can handle it?" Lou Mu was worried. It was obvious that these things were aimed at Tang Nian. Once he left Tang Nian's side, he was concerned about whether Tang Nian would be safe and sound.

"It shouldn't be a big problem."

Tang Nian is currently unable to use her magic as Xiang Liu, and her calf is injured, making it impossible for her to move. She can only rely on talismans, but someone is secretly monitoring them, so she can't do anything.

She would be a burden to Lou Mu if he carried her now. With Lou Mu's strength, even if he couldn't seriously injure the men in black, he could at least temporarily repel them.

As long as Lou Mu can find a breakthrough, they will be able to be rescued.

"Here's a dagger for you to use in self-defense." Lou Mu couldn't refuse Tang Nian, so he had no choice but to hand her the dagger he always carried.

Tang Nian leaned against the shop, gripping a dagger tightly in her hand. Without Tang Nian's interference, Lou Mu's moves became even more ruthless. The men in black were knocked down time and time again, but they got up again as if nothing had happened and continued to fight.

Suddenly, a man in black broke through Lou Mu's attack and quietly approached Tang Nian.

Just as the short knife in his hand was about to be placed against Tang Nian's neck, Tang Nian turned around and plunged the dagger into the black-clad man's body.

The man in black was stunned for a moment. Tang Nian used all her strength to knock him away with an elbow, sending him crashing heavily to the ground.

Overwhelmed, Tang Nian sat in a corner, panting heavily. Lou Mu's attacks became increasingly fierce, preventing the men in black from causing any more trouble for Tang Nian.

The thin mist on the street slowly dissipated, and Tang Nian seemed to hear a collision sound coming from afar. She tried to control her breathing and listened carefully. It sounded like the footsteps of patrolling soldiers and the sound of their armor.

She quickly looked up, but the mysterious figure sitting on the roof had vanished.

Is the testing over?

Hearing the sounds of fighting, the soldiers quickened their pace.

The moment they appeared in Tang Nian's sight, the eleven men in black instantly turned into a cloud of black mist and disappeared on the spot.

Tang Nian rolled her eyes, closed them, and slowly fell to the ground.

She heard someone running towards her and picking her up. The cool sandalwood scent must be Lou Mu.

"This humble servant greets Lord Lou." It was probably the voice of a patrolling soldier, who seemed quite shocked by what he was seeing.

A clanging sound of armor clashing echoed, seemingly as if someone was kneeling.

"Clean this place up and thoroughly investigate this matter." Lou Mu's cold voice carried a barely perceptible hint of urgency.

Listening to the noise around her and enveloped in the scent of sandalwood, Tang Nian's tense nerves relaxed, and she actually fell asleep.

...

"Tang Nian, Tang Nian!"

It sounds like Lou Mu's voice.

Lou Mu saw that Tang Nian had no reaction yet, and thought that she was injured somewhere. He was a little anxious, so he grabbed one of her hands to take her pulse.

Tang Nian was fast asleep and had no interest in paying attention to Lou Mu. She muttered "What?" in dissatisfaction and raised her hand to hit the source of the sound.

A crisp "snap" sound suddenly echoed throughout the room.

There was no sound.

Silence.

Hearing the noise, Jing Yao quickly pushed open the door. Looking at the two people lying and standing in the inner room, as well as the red mark on Lou Mu's face, she thought to herself, "This is bad." She quickly lowered her head, closed the door, and pretended that she had never been there.

Lou Mu was stunned by the sudden slap, while Tang Nian was completely awake.

"Um... I'm sorry, I..."

Lou Mu rubbed his face, looking at the woman sleeping soundly in front of him, and couldn't get angry at all: "Sit up, let me take your pulse."

Tang Nian, who had caused trouble, dared not complain and obediently sat up straight and stretched out her hand.

Lou Mu checked carefully and found that Tang Nian had really just fallen asleep. He breathed a sigh of relief: "It's good that you're alright. Get some rest."

Tang Nian lay on the bed, not missing the look of relief on Lou Mu's face. She tilted her head and watched Lou Mu's departing figure, lost in thought.
