Chapter 14: Successor of the Agency
A sharp alarm pierced the deadly silence of the night. Chu Yun's invisibility talisman was completely deactivated the instant the alarm sounded, leaving him completely exposed on the street. "Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!" The patrolling guards at the end of the street fired their crossbows without hesitation. Dozens of flashing, cold-light bolts, with sharp piercing sounds, rained down upon Chu Yun. Chu Yun's pupils shrank, and he thrust his feet hard, instantly retreating backward. He knew he couldn't take them head-on. In this haunted place, his golden talisman could only block three or five bolts at best. He retreated to a corner, barely dodging the first volley of arrows. The bolts lodged deeply in the ground where he had stood, their tails still trembling slightly. More footsteps echoed from all directions, rapidly closing in on him. Chu Yun's heart sank. He looked up at the small building shrouded in a web of red light. Li Ge stood by the second-floor window, her face as pale as paper. She had clearly not anticipated such a vicious trap. The red "spider web" of energy was slowly shrinking. Crisscrossing rays of light cut through the building like sharp blades. Li Ge dodged and dodged within the web, perilous. "Li Ge!" Chu Yun shouted softly. He couldn't bear to see her die in there. He pulled three talismans from his pocket—the last three attack talismans he had. He frantically poured his remaining strength into them. "Break!" The three talismans transformed into three golden rays of light, blasting fiercely into the shrinking red web. "Bang! Boom! Boom!" Three loud bangs erupted as the golden and red lights collided violently. The seemingly indestructible web trembled violently, slowing its contraction for a moment, but only for a moment. The next moment, the red light within the web surged, instantly devouring the three golden rays. Chu Yun felt a sweet sensation in his throat, and a surge of blood surged uncontrollably. He forced himself to swallow it—but it was no use. His strength was too severely suppressed here. Just as he was about to despair, a clear, sarcastic young woman's voice suddenly echoed from within the small building. "The Thunder and Fire Talisman of the Evil Suppression Division? Ridiculous." With this voice, the shrinking red light net suddenly stopped. Then, a young woman in a neat short dress and a high ponytail slowly emerged from the shadows of the second floor. She looked no more than sixteen or seventeen, with a pretty face, but...
The sharp sound of the alarm pierced the dead silence of the night sky. The moment the alarm sounded, Chu Yun's invisibility talisman completely lost its effect, and his figure was completely exposed on the street.
“Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!”
The patrol guards at the end of the street fired their crossbows without hesitation. Dozens of crossbow arrows flashing with cold light and making sharp sounds of breaking through the air shot towards Chu Yun.
Chu Yun's pupils shrank, and he exerted force on his feet, instantly throwing himself backward. He knew he couldn't take the blow head-on. In this horrible place, his golden talisman could only block three or five crossbow bolts at best. He retreated to the corner of the wall, barely dodging the first wave of arrows. The crossbow bolts lodged deeply in the ground where he had just stood, their tails still trembling slightly.
More footsteps came from all directions, quickly surrounding this place.
Chu Yun's heart sank. He looked up at the small building enveloped by a red web of light. Li Ge stood by the second-floor window, her face pale as a sheet. She had clearly not anticipated such a vicious trap. The red "spider web" of energy was slowly shrinking, crisscrossing rays of light like sharp blades, slicing through the space within the building. Li Ge's figure dodged constantly within the web of light, surrounded by danger.
"Li Ge!" Chu Yun growled. He couldn't bear to see her die in there. He pulled out three talismans from his pocket. These were the last three attack talismans he had. He frantically poured the little strength he had left into them.
"break!"
The three talismans turned into three golden rays of light and flew out of his hand, hitting the shrinking red light net hard.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Three loud bangs erupted as the golden and red lights collided violently. The seemingly indestructible net of light shook violently, its contraction slowing for a moment, but only for a moment. The next moment, the red light on the net surged, instantly devouring the three golden rays.
Chu Yun felt a sweetness in his throat, and a surge of blood surged up uncontrollably. He forced himself to swallow the blood - it was useless, his strength was suppressed too much here.
Just when he was feeling hopeless, a clear, somewhat sarcastic girl's voice suddenly rang out from within the small building: "The Thunder and Fire Talisman of the Evil Suppression Division? How ridiculous."
As the voice sounded, the shrinking red light net suddenly stopped.
Then, a young woman in a neat, short outfit and a high ponytail slowly emerged from the shadows of the second floor. She looked no more than sixteen or seventeen, and had a pretty face, but her eyes held a coldness and arrogance that belied her age. She stood before Li Ge, sizing her up and down as if she were an interesting toy.
"You are not from the Evil Suppression Division." The girl's gaze lingered on Li Ge for a moment before she came to a conclusion, "The smell of death on you is quite unique."
Li Ge didn't say anything, just looked at her warily.
The girl seemed to have lost interest in her, her gaze passing through the window to Chu Yun on the street below. The moment she saw Chu Yun, her cold eyes suddenly ignited with an undisguised, deep hostility and contempt: "So, there's a bigger one."
The girl sneered. She extended her slender fingers and gently tapped the air a few times, her movements graceful and composed, like a musician conducting her orchestra. As she moved, dozens of black gun muzzles suddenly appeared on the wall of the small building. "Buzz—" a teeth-aching humming sound echoed, and dozens of energy beams, countless times more powerful than the previous crossbow bolts, shot out from those muzzles, instantly blocking all of Chu Yun's escape routes.
Chu Yun's face instantly turned pale. He knew he couldn't withstand this attack, and subconsciously urged the last of his strength to fight to the death. At this moment, a black figure fell from the sky and landed heavily in front of him. It was Li Ge, who unexpectedly rushed out of the small building.
After landing, she didn't pause at all and pressed her hands hard on the ground: "Netherworld, earth wall!"
The bricks on the ground were instantly turned over, forming a thick wall made of soil and bricks in front of her and Chu Yun.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Dozens of energy beams slammed heavily into the earthen wall, causing it to tremble violently, sending countless rubble and dirt flying everywhere. It held out for just two seconds before shattering. Li Ge groaned, a trace of blood escaping from the corner of her mouth; she had clearly been seriously injured.
"Oh? The skills of a ghost doctor?" The girl upstairs seemed a little surprised. "It can actually control the Yin energy of the earth veins. That's quite interesting." She raised her hand again, as if preparing to launch a second round of attack.
"Stop!" Chu Yun supported the staggering Li Ge and shouted at the girl upstairs, "We have no intention of making an enemy of you! We just want to come in and investigate something!"
"Investigate?" The girl laughed out loud, as if she had heard some ridiculous joke. Her laughter was crisp, yet filled with cold hatred. "The remnants of the Evil Suppression Division, you came to my Mo Clan's territory and asked to investigate? What qualifications do you have to investigate us?"
She descended from the second-floor window sill step by step, as if walking on flat ground, ignoring gravity. With each step, a precision gear made of light appeared out of thin air, supporting her body. She stepped on the gears that appeared out of thin air, slowly landing in front of Chu Yun and Li Ge.
"My name is Mo Li." She looked at Chu Yun and spoke word by word, "The last heir of the Mo family."
She pointed at Chu Yun, her eyes almost filled with contempt: "I recognize this scent from you. Self-righteous, in line with the way of heaven, yet pedantic and incompetent. It's you, a bunch of trash, who have ruined everything for our Mo family!"
"We didn't!" Chu Yun retorted subconsciously.
"No?" Mo Li sneered. "Thirteen years ago, who was the first to slander my Mohist clan, accusing them of colluding with evil spirits, saying our mechanical arts were 'evil ways that would undermine the foundation of the nation'? Who led the army to razed all three hundred and sixty cities of my Mohist clan? And who nailed my father and my people to history's pillar of shame?"
Her voice became higher and higher, and more and more filled with resentment.
Chu Yun opened his mouth, but found himself speechless. He knew that what Mo Li said was likely true. Although it wasn't his father who did it, it was indeed the Suppression of Evils.
"Today, I will use my Mo family's mechanical arts, the power that you have denounced as 'evil ways', to completely bury you two remnants of the so-called righteous path here!" Mo Li's eyes flashed with madness, and she suddenly spread her hands to the sides:
"Dragnet, open!"
At her command, the entire street trembled violently. On the ground, on the walls, on the rooftops... countless metal gates rose from the ground, extended from the walls, and descended from the sky. These gates interlocked, forming a massive, airtight metal cage, trapping the three of them. Immediately, thousands of red dots of light lit up on all sides of the cage—the muzzles of countless attacking guns.
"I want to see," Mo Li looked at Chu Yun and Li Ge, who were trapped in the center of the cage with pale faces, and a happy, cruel smile appeared on his face. "Is your so-called 'Heavenly Way' of the Evil Suppression Division more powerful, or is my Mo family's 'Man Conquers Nature' mechanical technique superior?"
