Chapter 14 Visit (1/2)

Zheng Wanqing slowly woke up. She subconsciously reached out and touched the quilt beside her. It was cold to the touch. It seemed that he had left early again. She was wearing a thin lilac-colored shirt. The material was the finest Hangzhou silk, which was soft and cool to the touch.

She walked to the window and gently pushed open the carved wooden window, and the July breeze wrapped in the scent of jasmine blew in her face.

"Young Madam, do you want to prepare breakfast?" the maid asked softly outside the door.

"No need." Zheng Wanqing shook her head, "Young Marshal is dead before dawn?"

"He left at three quarters past three in the morning, saying that he had some urgent military business to attend to." The maid answered respectfully, her voice full of respect for the young marshal's diligence.

Zheng Wanqing strolled into the courtyard. The morning dew had not yet dispersed, leaving deep and shallow traces on the bluestone slabs. The jasmine potted plant was placed in the most ventilated place under the corridor, and fine water droplets condensed on the wall of the white porcelain pot.

She looked at the jasmine and couldn't help but think of the moments she had spent with Xie Yun. The corners of her mouth lifted unconsciously, and a warm feeling welled up in her heart. She couldn't help but reach out her hand, and her fingertips gently stroked the jasmine buds in the white porcelain basin like feathers.

Just as she was immersed in the wonderful atmosphere of fragrance and memories, Uncle Zhou's familiar voice quietly broke her memories, "Madam, Miss Xiao is here."

Zheng Wanqing turned her head and saw a woman in a light blue slanting collar shirt and a black pleated skirt walking through the moon-shaped door. The sunlight danced on the fountain pen in front of her collar, and then fell on her leisurely steps. The hem of her skirt swung in an elegant arc with her steps, and she exuded the unique elegance of a scholarly family.

"Sister Wanqing, are you okay?" Zheng Wanqing came closer with a look of genuine concern in her almond-shaped eyes. Zheng Wanqing then noticed the faint dark shadow under her eyes, which must be the trace of correcting homework all night.

"I met Yuheng at Gospel Hospital a few days ago and learned about what happened to you." Xiao lowered her voice, "Master Xie kept the news secret, and only your brother knew about it."

Zheng Wanqing felt warm in her heart and held Xiao Xiao's arm: "I feel bad that you miss me so much."

She led Xiao to the pavilion, but her eyes could not help but linger on her friend. She was wearing a lake blue shirt with a slanting collar, which made her skin look as white as snow. The collar was embroidered with orchids with silver lines, which appeared and disappeared with her steps. The white jade hairpin was inserted diagonally in her black hair, and the head of the hairpin was carved with a half-opened magnolia. Zheng Wanqing recognized the fountain pen that she always carried with her in front of her collar. It was the Montblanc that her brother brought back from Germany.

The slender willow-shaped eyebrows were slightly raised, which added a bit of heroism to her face. Her nose was straight and her lips were naturally bright red. She had her own charm even without makeup. She seemed to notice Zheng Wanqing's gaze and raised her eyes to smile.

"I wanted to come see you yesterday," Xiao sat down on the stone bench and took out an oil-paper bag from her handbag, "but I happened to come to see you during the monthly exam."

Zheng Wanqing took the oil-paper package, which contained the jujube paste cake from Hexiang Road, her favorite snack since she was a child. "Sister, you are so busy, but you still remember these things." Her nose felt a little sour, "It is a blessing for those children in the girls' school to have a teacher like you."

The Longjing tea brewed on the stone table was emitting wisps of steam. Zheng Wanqing reached out and picked up the teacup, seemingly saying casually: "This is the Longjing tea my brother asked someone to bring back last month." She observed Xiao Xiao's reaction calmly, and saw Xiao Xiao's hand holding the cup tremble slightly, and fine ripples suddenly appeared in the celadon cup.

Xiao lowered her eyes and blew away the tea foam to hide the emotion that flashed across her eyes. When she looked up again, she put on the unique look of a teacher: "Those children in the girls' school made a ring for me with wild grass the other day..."
