Zheng Wanqing smiled and reached out to hold his hand: "Your words here have already given me a lot of inspiration."
Xie Yun raised his eyebrows: "Oh?"
She stared at him, and suddenly her eyes lit up: "Got it!"
She couldn't wait to pick up the pen, the tip of the pen slid across the paper, and the ink quickly spread across the paper.
New Makeup
Take off your three-inch stockings,
Hearing the bell of the girls' school ringing,
I stepped on the old stone steps of the Chuihua Gate,
Make your own way.
Seeing her sudden burst of inspiration, Xie Yun couldn't help but move closer out of curiosity: "I want to know, what did I say just now that enlightened you?"
Zheng Wanqing gently turned the pen around her fingertips, with a gentle smile in her eyes: "You said that you have a rigid mindset, which reminds me of the time when I saw you giving a speech in the military camp a few days ago."
Xie Yun raised his eyebrows slightly, with a hint of doubt in his eyes: "What does this have to do with the new woman?"
"You said at the time..." She leaned forward slightly, imitating his low tone, "Soldiers should abide by iron rules, but should not be bound by old rules." Her eyes flickered, "Isn't this the spirit that a new woman should have? She should stick to her heart, but also dare to break the old rules."
Xie Yun was startled when he heard this, then he chuckled: "I didn't expect that I could use poetry to lead troops."
"The best writing comes from life." Zheng Wanqing said as she picked up her pen and added a few more words to the paper:
You don't have to be a canary under the eaves.
I want to be my own Wutong.
Even if the wind and rain break the branches and leaves,
Eventually the green shade will be cast into the sky.
At this point, she paused and looked out the window thoughtfully. Xie Yun followed her gaze and saw a newly planted sycamore tree in the courtyard swaying gently in the night breeze.
"Look," she said softly, "although this sycamore tree is a new seedling, it has already learned to stretch its branches and leaves in the wind. Just like today's women, they must retain traditional tenacity while learning Western-style independence."
Xie Yun quietly stared at her face which was gilded by the light, and suddenly reached out to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear: "I think you are more attractive than this phoenix tree."
Zheng Wanqing felt a slight heat in her ears, but her writing became more fluent.
Xie Yun looked at the poem gradually taking shape on the paper and said, "Actually, the new woman you wrote about reminds me of someone."
"who?"
"You." His fingertips gently touched the words "I want to be my own phoenix tree", insisting on relying on his own abilities to gain a firm foothold in his career. Isn't this tenacity and flexibility the best appearance of a new woman? "
Zheng Wanqing's heart trembled, and the pen in her hand paused inadvertently, and a small dot of ink spread out on the paper.
Xie Yun picked up the brush that had been placed on the inkstone by the official, and added a few vigorous words at the end of the draft poem:
To my new forever woman
The pen and brush writing blend together, just like their completely different yet unexpectedly compatible souls.
