Chapter 41 Arranged Marriage (2/2)

On the other side, Lin Hezhi had just left his wife behind and couldn't wait to turn around and go to the Dahua Ballroom in the French Concession.

The crystal chandeliers in the ballroom gilded the jazz band, and the phonograph played the latest American records.

Su Manqing wore a pearlescent cheongsam custom-made in Paris. The diamond hairpins on her temples flickered as she danced, making her look very much like the "Venus of the New Age" in Lin Hezhi's poem.

Her curly hair was fluffy like clouds, her red lips were slightly raised, and she was holding a glass of champagne between her fingertips. With her eyes moving around, she had already become the focus of all the gentlemen in the audience.

Lin Hezhi stood in the box on the second floor, his eyes fixed on her through his gold-rimmed glasses, with a fiery light flashing in his eyes.

"That Miss Su, I heard she just graduated from Cambridge Girls' School, and her father is a director of HSBC." The friend next to him whispered, "She is the most popular figure nowadays."

Lin Hezhi took a sip of whiskey, his Adam's apple rolled up and down, and his eyes became more and more fiery.

"By the way, why didn't you bring your wife?" a friend joked.

"She?" Lin Hezhi sneered while shaking his whiskey, his tone full of disgust, "She is serving my mother in the old house."

How could his wife with bound feet, who only knew how to bow her head and embroider, be worthy of attending such an occasion? Bringing her would only embarrass him. Thinking of this, Lin Hezhi felt annoyed.

He fixed his gaze on Su Manqing's graceful figure, with a slight smile on his face, "A woman like this is worthy of being a gentleman of this era." As he spoke, he adjusted his suit and tie, put on a posture that he thought was elegant, and strode down the stairs.

"Ms. Su, would you please do me the honor of dancing with me?" Lin Hezhi came in front of Su Manqing and bowed slightly. His posture seemed elegant, but in fact he could not hide his anxiety.

Su Manqing slowly raised her eyes, a playful smile appeared on her red lips, and she said in a gentle voice, "Mr. Lin? I've heard of your name for a long time."

Lin Hezhi's recent article published in "Juewu" has made him famous. Many people appreciate the so-called courage and insight in his article, and Su Manqing has naturally heard of it.

Su Manqing's fingertips gently rested on his palm, and the scarlet nail polish on her nails was like a cluster of fire, burning Lin Hezhi's heartbeat faster.

In the middle of the dance floor, Lin Hezhi's palms were burning hot on Su Manqing's waist.

He felt that this woman's waist was as soft as a bone, which was completely different from the wooden wife at home.

He leaned close to her ear, smelling the expensive French perfume, and said in a deep voice: "Miss Su's dance steps are more moving than the most popular dancer in Paris. It is so fascinating."

Su Manqing chuckled, and the sound like a silver bell echoed in Lin Hezhi's ears: "Mr. Lin, you are too kind."

When the dance ended, Lin Hezhi grabbed her wrist as if possessed by a demon: "If Miss Su would do you honor me... could you please have a simple meal with me tonight?"

"Of course I'm willing to accept an invitation from a big shot like Mr. Lin." Su Manqing looked at Lin Hezhi's face and had to admit that Lin Hezhi was indeed handsome and talented, and was also well-known in the literary circle.

She hesitated for a while, a sly look flashed in her eyes, and then she whispered, "But... I heard that you have a family?"

Lin Hezhi's expression remained unchanged, but his tone was somewhat helpless, as if it was a trivial matter not worth mentioning: "It's just an arranged marriage, there is no emotion at all."

"Oh?" Su Manqing raised her eyebrows slightly, "What does Mr. Lin plan to do?"

He moved closer to Su Manqing, and said in a low and ambiguous voice: "If Miss Su is willing, I can publish a divorce in the newspaper at any time." When he said this, there was a gleam of expectation in his eyes, as if he had already seen a future in which he and Su Manqing would live together happily.

Su Manqing smiled gently, with an unpredictable look in her eyes. She did not respond immediately, but just pulled him to continue dancing to the rhythm of the music on the dance floor, enjoying this ambiguous encounter.
