Chapter 7 Clues (1/2)

In the dead of night, Zheng Wanqing was suddenly awakened by the twelfth strike of the mahogany carved clock. Her forehead was soaked with cold sweat, and a strand of hair stuck to Cangqi's cheek.

She fumbled around the bedside table in panic, her fingertips touched the cold button of the desk lamp, and with a "click", the dim light flickered in the silent room, reflecting her frightened face.

Zheng Wanqing clearly felt the bedpost tremble for a second. She didn't even bother to put on her shoes. She stepped on the cold floor and felt a chill in her heart. She walked quickly to the window, her nails almost digging into the carved window frame. The night was dark, and there was no sign of thunder.

Is this an illusion?

Lying back on the bed, she tossed and turned. The inexplicable tremor was like a haze, enveloping her and making it difficult for her to fall asleep.

The morning mist had not yet dispersed, and Zheng Wanqing, wrapped in a soft shawl, stood quietly under the porch. The ink of the Yishi Daily had not yet dried, leaving spider-web-like black marks on her palms, and the eye-catching headline on the front page hurt her eyes: "Langfang Arsenal was bombarded!" However, the accompanying picture was an old photo of a cavalry patrol three months ago.

Her hands began to tremble uncontrollably, and her whole body seemed to be frozen in place. Her mind was blank, and she just stood there blankly, reading the entire article word by word.

The ammunition depot was blown up! This thought kept echoing in her mind.

Could that muffled sound last night be... She felt mixed emotions. She thought the situation had eased a little, but she didn't expect the sudden change. How much loss would this bring.

Zheng Wanqing looked troubled and worried. Just as she was about to turn around and go back home, she saw a maid returning with a vegetable basket, the vegetables in the basket were still dripping with water.

The maid was holding a newspaper in her hand. The moment she saw Zheng Wanqing, she paused and said, "Madam, why are you standing at the door so early in the morning? You scared me."

Zheng Wanqing clearly felt the faint smile on her face, which disappeared instantly when she saw her, and her mind recalled the ink stain on her wrist yesterday.

"It's getting hotter and hotter. I woke up when the sun came out. I had nothing to do so I came out to get a newspaper. I didn't expect to meet you." She put on a gentle smile, "Qiuyu, I didn't expect you like reading newspapers too."

The maid's eyelashes trembled violently, and she quickly explained, "Madam, you are joking. I am not well educated, so I don't understand these things. I just saw that the newsboy was wearing tattered clothes and felt very pitiful, so I bought a copy."

"Qiuyu, you have a really kind heart." Zheng Wanqing's lips curled up slightly, but her eyes were particularly sharp.

The maid smiled shyly and responded humbly: "Then I can't compare to the kind-hearted and beautiful young marshal and young lady."

Zheng Wanqing squeezed the newspaper tightly with her fingers and said with a smile, "Come in, I also want to call my father to tell him the good news."

The maid looked puzzled and blurted out subconsciously: "Good news?"

"Yes," Zheng Wanqing raised her hand holding the newspaper, "You won't understand even if I tell you. Well, go and get busy." After saying that, she turned around and walked calmly into the mansion, leaving only the maid standing there in a daze. No one saw that she was biting her lower lip tightly.

Inside the room, Zheng Wanqing was sitting on a rattan chair and picking up the telephone receiver. Her slender fingers were winding the telephone cord in circles, while her eyes were glancing at the vague figure in the crack of the door.

"Don't worry, father. Langfang is just an empty city plan. Fortunately, Yumin told me, otherwise I would be shocked when I saw the newspaper. Right, you were also scared, so I called you early. In fact, I saw Yumin put the blueprint in the drawer of the study. He said that the more dangerous the place, the safer it is. Okay, okay, don't worry..."
