Chapter 9: Light (2/2)

"Fortunately you came in time." Zheng Wanqing said softly, with a hint of sobs in her voice. From the moment Xie Yun appeared, Zheng Wanqing's long-tightened nerves finally relaxed. She was really too tired, and the exhaustion of body and mind surged over her like a tide. After saying this, her eyes went dark and she fainted.

Xie Yun felt her body soften, his heart tightened, and he quickly picked her up. He looked down at her slightly pale face with her eyes closed, then took a deep breath and strode out of the cellar.

Lying on the carved mahogany and copper-cornered bed in the Governor's Mansion, Zheng Wanqing frowned painfully in her coma.

Xie Yun held a cotton ball in his hand with his arm suspended in the air. His eyes were fixed on the bruise on Zheng Wanqing's waist, the wound was a strange purple-red color, his eyes were full of heartache and hesitation.

“Young Marshal, please let me…” The maid beside her carefully held the medicine tray and asked softly, her voice sounding particularly weak in the silent room.

"Get out." Xie Yun said briefly and decisively without turning his head, with unquestionable majesty in his tone.

"Bear with it." He murmured in a low voice, his voice as soft as a dream talk. It was unclear whether he was trying to comfort the unconscious Zheng Wanqing, or trying to convince himself to muster up the courage to face the heartbreaking scene before him.

He slowly lifted the bloodstained cloth, and the cotton ball soaked in medicinal wine just touched the wound, and Zheng Wanqing convulsed and curled up in the torture of high fever. Her body instinctively resisted the piercing pain, and one hand suddenly grabbed Xie Yun's sleeve, and she whimpered helplessly like a kitten in her coma.

Xie Yun only felt a sharp pain in his heart. He quickly unbuttoned the first two buttons of his shirt with one hand, trying to give himself a breath and suppress the violence and anger that was surging in his heart.

He slowly leaned over, his warm lips almost touching her cold shoulder, and whispered softly, "It will be all right soon, all right soon." The voice was as gentle as a feather, and carried with it endless pity.

At this moment, a German doctor with a mustache hurried into the room carrying a leather medical box. The doctor looked a little nervous, and his movements were trembling as he opened the chrome-plated medical box.

He took out a silver-plated pocket watch to measure her pulse and used a copper stethoscope to feel Zheng Wanqing's back. "39.8 degrees Fahrenheit. I recommend an injection of quinine to reduce the fever." He took out an ampoule with the Bayer Pharmaceuticals logo from his medical box. "This is an anti-septic injection developed by Berlin."

"Inject it." Xie Yun responded briefly, his eyes never leaving Zheng Wanqing.

After the doctor finished the injection and examined her carefully, he said, "Young Marshal, Madam is fine. She just fainted because her body was too stressed out. She should be fine when she wakes up. However, Madam still has a lot of injuries on her body and needs careful care."

Xie Yun nodded slightly, and his heart was finally at ease. After the western doctor left the room, Xie Yun sat gently beside the bed, staring quietly at Zheng Wanqing's slightly pale face.

At five o'clock in the morning, Zheng Wanqing slowly woke up. She slowly opened her eyes, and gradually regained consciousness. In a trance, she found that her hand was wrapped in someone's warm palm. She tilted her head slightly and saw Xie Yun leaning against the head of the bed with his eyes closed. He looked a little gentler than usual when he was asleep.

She subconsciously tried to pull her hand back, but her movement was slight and still woke up Xie Yun who was in a light sleep.

"Take the medicine when you wake up." He suddenly opened his eyes, with a hint of surprise and concern in his eyes, and his voice was a little hoarse because he had just woken up.

Zheng Wanqing nodded slightly, her eyes still a little dazed. Xie Yun gently stood up and brought the medicine bowl that had been prepared long ago from the table beside him. The medicine soup in the medicine bowl was still steaming and exuding a bitter taste.

He sat back on the bed, slowly helped Zheng Wanqing up, and let her lean against his arms. His movements were gentle and careful, as if he was afraid of hurting her.

Xie Yun picked up the medicine bowl, picked up the spoon, gently scooped up a spoonful of medicine soup, put it to his mouth and blew gently, tested the temperature, and then handed it to Zheng Wanqing's lips.

"Open your mouth," he said softly, his tone doting.

Zheng Wanqing slightly opened her lips, held the spoon, and slowly swallowed the bitter medicine. The medicine flowed down her throat, and the bitter taste spread in her mouth. She couldn't help but frowned slightly.

Xie Yun looked at her frowning face, feeling a little distressed, and said, "It tastes bitter but it is good medicine." Then he scooped up another spoonful of medicine and continued to feed it to her.

After feeding her the medicine, Xie Yun gently put Zheng Wanqing back on the bed, tucked the quilt in for her, and said, "Sleep a little longer. I'll be here with you."

Zheng Wanqing nodded slightly, slowly closed her eyes, and fell asleep again under Xie Yun's warm gaze.
