Chapter 21: The Tool-like Military Wife of the 1960s

For more than ten days in a row, except for the first two days when Fang's mother refrained from scolding her daughter, every day afterwards, there was Fang's mother's constant nagging.

At first, she would argue back defiantly, only to be slapped by Fang's mother in return.

It didn't hurt, but it was really embarrassing, considering she's so old.

But it wouldn't do for her to be stingy because she's afraid of being beaten.

So she stopped talking back, but continued to do things the same way, letting Fang's mother's words go in one ear and out the other.

The key point is that she doesn't give Fang's mother a chance to use the spatula; she always does it herself.

Fang's mother was both angry and helpless.

That day, while cooking, Fang Yuan habitually scooped out a small piece of lard and put it in the pan, which once again drew his mother's nagging:

"You brat! I told you to use less oil, use less oil! Why won't you listen? How much oil do you have to squander? How did I raise such a spendthrift girl?"

Watching Fang Yuan scoop a big hole in the oil tank with a single shovelful of oil, I felt so heartbroken!

The oil Fang Yuan dug up would last her family at least three days.

This girl has been spoiled since she was a child, and now that she's married to a man who dotes on her, she's become even more unrestrained.

Thinking back to when she first arrived, the food at this house was all meat, better than what the landlords and rich people ate before.

Having heard this countless times, Fang Yuan was already quite calm. Although she didn't intend to reply, she couldn't help but retort:

"My dear mother, your daughter's belly is so big, the baby could be born at any moment, how can she not eat more oily food?"

Her husband lets her do whatever she wants; all he has to do is provide money, food, and ration coupons. Aside from praising her cooking, he doesn't say a single unnecessary thing.

She's her own mother, worrying about her unnecessarily every day.

Her husband earns a high salary. After being promoted to deputy regimental level, he received a basic salary of 175 plus a subsidy of 52.5, which brings him to 227.5 a month.

Zhao Qingzhuo has been spoiled by her for the past few months, and he's actually not used to having less meat.

Upon hearing Fang Yuan's words, Fang's mother began to scold him mercilessly, counting on her fingers:

"I've been here for half a month now, and every morning I have to have an egg, either with plain white flour steamed buns or refined rice porridge."

For lunch and dinner, it's either fish or shrimp, or pork. You've never even had a single meal of mixed noodles, let alone steamed cornbread. How dare you say you're not getting enough nutrition?

She felt both heartache and joy; heartache for her daughter's extravagant spending, and joy that her daughter had fallen into a life of luxury.

But this is too lenient. How will they be able to support three children in the future?

"Mom, we're by the sea here, it's normal to have fish and shrimp, isn't that how everyone eats them?" Fang Yuan rolled her eyes.

That's the downside of living in this day and age; even if you eat something nice, people will nag you.

She's already toned it down a lot, only making one meat dish. If she stir-fries a vegetable dish with a little more oil, she gets scolded. Who can she complain to?

"Sister-in-law, the regimental commander asked me to bring back your package." Just then, Liu Lei's voice came from outside the door.

"It's here. Where did this come from?" Fang Yuan asked casually.

Since she became pregnant, her in-laws have been sending her packages non-stop.

There are two or three every month, ranging from food to daily necessities, and besides the things for her, who is pregnant, there are even more things for the baby.

She basically didn't buy anything; she and her child already had everything they needed.

“It’s Beijing,” Liu Lei said after looking at the address.

"Your in-laws must have sent you something again! You're such a lucky girl, marrying into such a wonderful family."

Seeing Fang Yuan, heavily pregnant, still trying to take the package, her mother quickly stepped forward to take it: "It's so heavy? Let me do it. You're about to give birth and you're still being so reckless."

Since she came here, her daughter has been receiving packages every few days.

Not only from the capital, but also from other provinces, all good things sent by Zhao Qingzhuo's parents and brothers.

But what could she do when her daughter was so lucky, carrying triplets all at once?

"Okay, Mom, you can put the things in my room first, and I'll come and unpack them later."

Fang Yuan frowned and carefully touched her stomach, wondering if she was about to give birth.

Today I feel a downward pressure in my stomach.

But she's only eight months pregnant now, and she's not sure when she'll give birth to twins and triplets.

"Okay, I'll cook the rest of the dishes. My son-in-law will be back soon. You can sit here and wait."

After Fang's mother put the things inside, she noticed that Fang Yuan hadn't gone into the kitchen, so she simply told Fang Yuan to sit down to the side.

This girl's heart always skips a beat when she cooks. I'd rather save my son-in-law some money, as long as I don't have to send her back.

"Alright then!"

Fang Yuan felt unwell and stopped arguing with her mother. She sat on a recliner under the eaves to rest for a while, needing to ascertain her condition.

"Wife, I'm home!"

As soon as Zhao Qingzhuo entered the room, Fang Yuan felt a sharp pain in her stomach.

Fang Yuan froze on the spot, her stomach throbbing with pain, something she had never experienced before.

"System, am I about to give birth?"

That's right.

"Qingzhuo, I...I think I'm going into labor."

Having received the system's answer, Fang Yuan clutched his stomach and looked at Zhao Qingzhuo, shouting.

"What? So fast? Mom, I've taken Yuanyuan to the hospital."

Zhao Qingzhuo didn't even have time to change his clothes before picking Fang Yuan up and rushing outside.

"No, put me down first, I can walk by myself."

She's only just started experiencing pain; she's not about to give birth yet.

"No way, I'll carry you and run faster!"

Zhao Qingzhuo retorted, then picked Fang Yuan up and ran out.

"Sigh, why did it start today? Was the package too heavy?"

Fang's mother came out with a bowl and looked at the dishes on the table.

Okay, I'd better hurry up and make another bowl of noodles and add two extra eggs.

Knowing that her daughter was about to give birth, Fang's mother didn't care about feeling sorry for her anymore. She turned around, washed the pot, and immediately started boiling water to make noodles.

Fang Yuan's delivery went smoothly; she was in good health, and it took her longer than many people to give birth.

Less than an hour after Fang's mother ate the noodles she had eaten, the three babies were born smoothly.

"Congratulations, Commander Zhao, your wife has given you three sons!"

Two nurses and a doctor each carried three swaddled babies out, leaving the two people waiting outside stunned.

"You gave birth so quickly? Is my daughter alright?"

Fang's mother couldn't believe it; when did she give birth so quickly?

However, it's good to give birth quickly, as it means less suffering.

"Is my wife alright? Can I go in and check on her?" Zhao Qingzhuo also asked Fang Yuan with concern.

"It's alright, the mother is fine. This is the first time we've ever seen such a smooth delivery. She'll be out soon."

The doctor then handed the baby in his arms to him to see:

“Here, this is your eldest son, weighing four jin and three liang. The one over there is your second son, weighing four jin and one liang.”

The smallest one is much lighter, weighing only 3.1 pounds, but he's healthy. It's quite impressive that triplets are this big.
