Chapter 25: The Tool-like Military Wife of the 1960s

"Hurry up and take it out. I just brought back some cotton. It's almost New Year, and all the children in the Fang family need to have new clothes. This is a gift from her aunt. Only she is entitled to wear it."

Fang's mother didn't waste any time arguing with her and directly told her to take it out. She wanted to see if this woman could produce it.

The things she specially prepared for her grandchildren ended up benefiting outsiders, even though her own children didn't get to wear them.

"Um...I..."

Liu Zhaodi dawdled and wouldn't make a move.

Seeing this, Fang He frowned and urged him directly:

"What's going on? Didn't you say you were saving it for the kids? Hurry up and take it out! There's a sewing machine my younger sister left us; my mom can sew clothes really fast!"

He still hoped in his heart that those things were still at home, although the possibility was slim.

This wife promised him she would live a good life with him and take care of his parents.

Not long after, anything the family gave him would disappear shortly after entering their house.

At first, he thought she had been robbed, but later he saw the woman carrying large and small bags back to the countryside, and he realized that the woman was taking them all back to pay respects to her mother-in-law who had made his life miserable.

Knowing she could no longer hide it, Liu Zhaodi had no choice but to speak:

"I took this to my parents' house because you weren't home, and I don't know how to sew, so I asked her to make it for me since you weren't there..."

"Your mother made it for you? You said before that a little girl doesn't deserve to use good fabric. Are you sure your mother made it for the child?"

Fang's mother looked at her and asked again.

This is all so incoherent; it's obvious the things were given to her family.

Help me do it? Help me do my ass!

"It's true. I was thinking of giving the child a New Year's gift, and I'll go pick it up tomorrow."

As Liu Zhaodi answered, she was thinking about where to buy some similar fabric and cotton the next day.

The family's savings are probably even less now.

"Oh? A New Year's gift? It must be ready already. Go and pick it up tomorrow. I'll add some cotton in the next couple of days to make it thicker for her to wear for the New Year."

Fang's mother raised an eyebrow. She was just waiting for this troublesome daughter-in-law to bring the things back. Once the things were back, she would pretend that nothing had happened.

"I see······"

Liu Zhaodi's expression changed slightly, but she nodded nonetheless.

She was thinking about who could get the cloth back to her, since she knew she couldn't get it back from her mother anyway, and she never even considered asking for it.

Seeing that Liu Zhaodi was about to return to her room, Fang's mother hurriedly came over again:

"Give me the money you owe these past few months, so I can deposit it while the credit union is open!"

Their family rule is that two-thirds of their salary is given to her for household expenses, and the rest can be allocated as she sees fit.

As a mother-in-law, she is already considered very generous.

She's been away from home for the past few months, so she's let her daughter-in-law keep the money for themselves and haven't taken it.

There's a proper way to collect money. If they found the jobs themselves and their families didn't pay for them, then giving them some living expenses is fine.

But since her family found her the job, she had to hand over two-thirds of it.

The eldest son's wife is a teacher, and she brought her own job to the job, so she only pays ten yuan a month for living expenses.

The second and third sons' wives were given jobs by their family after they married into the family.

The second son's wife is a saleswoman, earning 28 yuan a month; the third son's wife is a temporary worker at a meat processing plant, earning 18 yuan a month.

Both are good companies. Although the salaries are not high, both are top-notch companies.

They went to great lengths to obtain them.

The second son's wife is quite good; the family basically has everything they need.

The third son's wife worked at the meat processing plant for two years. Except for the first month or two when she brought back some scraps, she never brought home even half a piece of meat again.

Every time I go back to the countryside, I bring lots and lots of things, as if I'm afraid my family won't be able to move everything out of the house.

Thinking of this, Fang's mother felt a surge of anger.

Upon hearing Fang's mother's words, the second daughter-in-law, Luo Mei, went into the house and quickly came out, handing her money to Fang's mother:

"Mom, I've already prepared this, it's mine!"

Although she had the money in hand these past few months, she kept the money that needed to be paid separately, so she acted quickly.

She knew very well that she was truly lucky to have married into such a generous family as the Fang family.

Who buys a job for their daughter-in-law and also gives her nearly ten yuan in pocket money?

After paying the money, she didn't have to worry about the family's food, clothing, and daily necessities; her mother-in-law would take care of everything.

The money she kept was her own little treasure trove; everyone said she had fallen into a lucky hole.

"Hmm, you're quite well-behaved." Fang's mother finally smiled as she took Luo Mei's money.

Turning to look at Liu Zhaodi, who was standing motionless to the side, Fang's mother frowned again: "Where's yours?"

"Mom... I... My younger brother is getting married soon, so I lent them the money first."

Liu Zhaodi rubbed her hands and replied hesitantly.

She wasn't lying; her younger brother was indeed getting married, but the bride's family was asking for a high dowry.

Her mother cried to her several times about how the family had no money and her younger brother couldn't get married.

She couldn't resist and used her salary from the past few months, plus the money Fang He had saved for her, to give two hundred yuan to her family.

What she has left is not enough to give to her mother-in-law.

"Getting a wife? That's a good thing, but when will the mother-in-law return the money? I'll go to my house for the wedding gifts, but the money we borrowed still needs to be repaid. I have to take care of all the food, drink, and daily needs of our family, so we can't let the accounts get messed up."

Seeing that her expression had turned cold, Fang's mother asked again.

"I...can I hand over my entire salary for the next six months to offset this amount?" Liu Zhaodi murmured to Fang's mother.

She never intended for her family to pay it back; she thought she could just save the money for six months.

Upon hearing this, Fang's mother could no longer hold back:

"Liu Zhaodi, it's been four years. You've been married into the Fang family for four years. You eat and drink the food from the Fang family, and the job was found by the Fang family."

You neglect your granddaughter's basic needs, giving everything to your maternal family. Tell me, what did we marry you for? Just to have you support your family?

Fang's mother was furious. For the first time, she had the urge to hit her daughter-in-law. She held back and turned to look at Fang He beside her.

She raised her hand and slapped him, cursing:

"It's all your fault, you idiot! What kind of wife did you find? She practically moved your whole family to her parents' house. When you brought her to see me, she pretended to be honest and hardworking. I must have had eight lifetimes of bad luck to be fooled by you!"

Fang He, rubbing his bruised arm, was completely bewildered.

"Mom, don't be angry. I didn't know she took the money and went back to her parents' house without telling me. I'll talk to her about it later!"

He gave all his pocket money to his wife, so did she give it all to her family?

“Mom, my family’s circumstances are indeed a bit worse, and as their daughter, I’ve only taken care of them a little. I didn’t move to my husband’s family to support my family,” Liu Zhaodi retorted, unconvinced.

Her parents raised her and gave birth to her, and now that she's married well, how can she not repay her family?

In the past two years, she has often brought things and meat back home, and her family has always pampered and coaxed her.

Let her forget the treatment she received at her parents' home, which was worse than that of a dog.
