Chapter 11: The Tool-like Military Wife of the 1960s

Zhang Xiuzhen was unaware that a phone call had already been made to her hometown.

Moreover, because of Liu Lan's suspicions, the military not only reinvestigated the performance of Zhang Tiezhu's former company commander, but also sent people from the military to his hometown for a secret investigation.

After confirming that he had set a trap for Zhang Xiuzhen, Fang Yuan returned to his courtyard in a good mood.

Looking at the yard full of vegetable seedlings, she realized it was time to plant fruit trees.

She picked out a lychee and a mango and planted them in the two outermost corners.

After planting the trees, Fang Yuan looked around with satisfaction.

After a few more days of comfort at home, Fang Yuan patted her belly, thinking that she could still have some fun.

"Weiguo, Weiguo, are you there?" Fang Yuan ran next door to find the third son of the He family.

"Auntie, what's wrong?" He Weidang asked as he came out.

Fang Yuan handed him a White Rabbit candy. "Didn't you say you'd take me clamming a few days ago? Auntie has time today, can we go?"

That's right, she's going to go beachcombing.

Now I can openly take out seafood from my space to eat.

She's quite helpless about having seafood feasts hidden in her social media every day.

When her husband comes back, there's nothing in the house; she can't just conjure it up out of thin air, can she?

She needs to take this opportunity to bring out everything that can be made public.

In addition, she had never actually been to the beach before, so she wanted to give it a try.

"Want to go beachcombing? Let's go! Auntie, wait a minute, I'll tell my mom!"

He Weidang is only 8 years old, and he loves things like going to the beach.

"Second brother, I want to go too! Take me with you!"

He Weimin ran out of the house and said anxiously.

“You’re too young, no, no, you stay home and be good. We’ll eat when we come back from the beach.” He Weidang shook his head in disagreement.

This kid always tries to follow them when they go out. Doesn't he even know how old he is?

What should I do if I fall into the sea?

“My mom used to take me there,” He Weimin said, unconvinced.

"That's because Mom was holding your hand the whole time. We're going to teach Auntie how to go beachcombing, so we can't take you this time."

He Weiguo returned from the house with a small bucket and a shovel.

"Don't leave me at home! I want to go! I want to go!"

Seeing that his brothers were going out without him, He Weimin was so anxious that he stomped his feet and was about to cry.

"You little rascal, you're so young but you always want to run around outside. Alright, Mom will go with you."

Liu Lan chuckled and pulled the youngest troublemaker along.

She hadn't gone beachcombing in a long time either, so they decided to go together today and she could teach Fangyuan how to do it.

"Is my sister-in-law going too? That would be even better. I can carry this little bucket, right?" Fang Yuan said, pointing to the plastic bucket outside the door.

There are two large wooden barrels at home, but the plastic barrel is the lightest.

She was just looking for an excuse to start beachcombing.

"The bucket is fine, but remember to bring a hat, pliers, and a shovel," Liu Lan reminded her.

"I forgot the hat, I have the pliers, but I don't have the shovel."

Although I've never been to the beach before, I've watched a lot of videos.

She knew roughly what the beachcombing equipment was like, but all she had was a pair of fire tongs for starting a stove.

"You should wear a hat. Although it's not even March yet, the sun is very strong here and you can easily get sunburned. I wasn't used to it for a while when I first arrived."

Liu Lan is from Northeast China, so she got used to this place after a while.

"good!"

Fang Yuan went back to get his hat and then went to the beach with Liu Lan's family.

Not long after the group left, Zhang Xiuxia came over with a small bag of fruit hard candies, ostensibly to apologize.

Looking at the two courtyards with their doors closed, her originally gentle smile turned gloomy.

He glared fiercely at the two courtyards for a moment, then turned and went back.

Fang Yuan arrived at the seaside and looked at the clear seawater and sandy beach.

The seawater of this era is much better; it's unpolluted, and you can freely scoop things out of the sea.

"Wow, I caught a big crab."

He Weidang shouted loudly, and happily put the crabs into the bucket.

"Mommy, there are seashells here, big seashells!"

He Weimin raised the seashell in his hand and said defiantly.

"Girl, beachcombing is very simple. The key is to choose the right time. It's most popular after the tide goes out. You also need to watch out for things under the sand, there are things under these holes."

Liu Lan pointed to the location while explaining it to Fang Yuan.

They also advised her which varieties tasted good and which products could be sold for money.

Most military spouses who accompany their husbands to the military are unemployed.

Staying at home doing housework, taking care of children, and looking after men is their whole life.

Beachcombing isn't just about adding ingredients to your meals; you can also make dried goods to send back to your hometown or sell them for some money.

It's like having an extra source of income.

"Oh, it's Aunt Liu! You're here to go beachcombing today too?"

Sure enough, military dependents came over from the other side carrying small buckets.

"It's Chunxiang! You're also going beachcombing? How was your harvest today?" Liu Lan greeted her with a smile.

Then he introduced her to Fang Yuan: "This is Wang Chunxiang, the wife of the deputy battalion commander of the first battalion. Just call her Sister-in-law Chunxiang."

"Chunxiang, this is Fangyuan, the wife of the Third Battalion Commander."

"Hello, Sister Chunxiang, I'm Fang Yuan, you can just call me Xiao Yuan." Fang Yuan greeted her with a smile.

"Oh, I was wondering whose new bride was so beautiful. Turns out she's from the Third Battalion Commander's family." Wang Chunxiang smiled.

Fang Yuan is really beautiful; no wonder so many people are talking about her.

I just don't know if he can do it. I hope he's not just a figurehead. If he is, then Battalion Commander Zhao will be in trouble.

"Sister-in-law, please don't laugh at me. What's in your bucket? This is my first time going beachcombing, and I don't recognize many of the things!"

Fang Yuan tried to change the subject, but the scrutinizing look in his eyes displeased her.

These military wives have nothing to do all day, so any news they hear can quickly spread throughout the military region.

She genuinely didn't want to become the subject of their conversation.

"Hey, your bucket's empty? Judging by your appearance, you've never been to the beach!"

Wang Chunxiang glanced at the empty buckets around her and smiled.

She's definitely a pampered daughter. Being pretty doesn't put food on the table; she can't even go beachcombing.

I wonder if Battalion Commander Zhao will be able to get a meal when he goes home in the future.

"Isn't that what you're here for? You're an expert at beachcombing, so please share your tips with her in the future."

As Liu Lan spoke, she began to help Fang Yuan; she genuinely liked this girl.

“Okay, I’ll definitely teach you if we meet again in the future,” Wang Chunlan nodded in reply.

After chatting with Liu Lanfang for a few more minutes, he carried his small bucket back home.

"Come on, she came from that side, she must have picked everything over there, let's go check the other side!"

As Liu Lan spoke, she led Fang Yuan in the opposite direction.

"Sure enough, this area hasn't been picked up yet, and there's quite a lot of stuff here."

As Liu Lan put food into the bucket, she explained to Fang Yuan the techniques for beachcombing and how to cook seafood.

“We have lots of sandy beaches and few piles of rocks and broken stones here, so we can find quite a lot of things. When you get back, add some scallions and ginger to remove the odor, and it will taste good whether you steam it or boil it.”

"Thank you, sister-in-law. Sister-in-law, can you tell if this fish is edible?" Fang Yuan asked, picking up a fish with a large head and a long body.

She didn't know much about fish, but she felt that this one looked a bit like the pleco she had seen in her previous life. However, upon closer inspection, it was different; this thing had a very long body.
