Chapter 19 The Melancholy Narcissus

The school was unusually busy because of the pet appreciation event and the arrival of the Third Princess; even Ellie was called in.

After several days of preparation, Airi felt like she was about to collapse. Meanwhile, a certain delinquent was nestled in the snow woman's arms, watching the spectacle unfold.

"Go, Ellie!"

"I'll beat you to a pulp when I get back!"

"I'm so scared! The principal assigned me a task. If you dare to bully me, I'll tell on you!"

"You bastard!"

"Alright, my dear master, maybe we can make a fortune this time. Just wait and collect your money!"

"Are you sure you can communicate with the princess's pet?"

"I'm not sure, but as long as the principal is sure! He'll take responsibility if anything goes wrong, after all, I'm just a weak slime."

"Okay, you're right."

On Friday, the venue was finally ready.

As representatives of Class 1, Grade 1, Ellie and her classmates stood at the front of the welcoming team, along with representatives from other grades.

Pet judging events are not held every year. They are only held when a school discovers an exceptionally outstanding pet, reports it to the royal family, and obtains the necessary qualifications.

The biggest highlight is the subsequent pet competition, which combines practical drills with artistic performances. This is also one of the ways the school attracts outstanding students.

Before long, a luxurious carriage appeared in front of the school. A girl wearing a light blue dress and a blue crystal crown stepped down from the carriage with the help of her attendants.

Following behind was a woman dressed similarly, but much shorter, about the same height as Xiaoxue. She was surrounded by water elements, which added a touch of mystery in the sunlight.

"Welcome, Princess Caitlin, to the Academy Appreciation Event!"

After the principal finished his announcement, enthusiastic applause erupted. This time, not only the school but also the city lord and many of the city's nobles were present, making the scene quite lively.

“Principal Brian, please don’t stand on ceremony, let’s go inside first.”

"Is that the black slime you were talking about? I don't see anything unusual about it!" Caitlin asked Brian in a low voice.

"It needs physical contact with your pet to communicate."

"Ah, but my Xianxian is a germaphobe, she hates it when other people touch her."

“This,” Brian didn’t know how to answer, so he chose to remain silent.

After all the guests were seated, the pet appreciation event began.

First came the performance segment, with older students performing first. The opening act was a battle of wolves, where many ice wolves, under their master's command, appeared in a square formation, charging forward and pouncing on their prey, culminating in a final howl. The whole scene was quite spectacular.

"As expected of Sacred Heart City, which is known as the Ice City, it has so many ice wolves, and they are trained quite well."

"Those guys look so imposing, I want to contract one too."

"Heh, can you afford it? Those cubs are very expensive."

Ice wolves, combining magic and speed, and rideable even when fully grown, are among the most common magical beasts in Sacred Heart City. However, only the offspring of nobles have the opportunity to form contracts with them, as these pet cubs can typically fetch astronomical prices.

Next came the performance of the Wind and Thunder Eagle, chasing the wind and thunder; followed by the snowman's performance, with snow falling all around...

The performances proceeded one after another, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed them, with many applauding and cheering. The nobles, watching their children's performances, were even more excited.

"Next up is a performance of 'Song of Snow and Fire' by first and second graders!"

Then, to the astonishment of the audience, a snow woman wearing a black hat and a fire spirit with the same appearance began their performance, a clash of snow and fire.

"A level 22 player fighting a level 31 player? Wouldn't the difference be too significant?"

"Those two little elves are so cute!"

"What's the use of that black hat?"

As a result, the viewers discovered that the hat could extend tentacles to knock away any snowballs and fireballs that slipped through, protecting the girls around it.

Finally, a giant snowball and a fireball collided, blasting snow into the air, causing many people to stand up.

“Interesting. Those two pets have amazing magical control. That slime is quite agile. Can they communicate with each other?” Caitlin said with a smile.

"Yes, it was controlled by that slime that can create clones," Brian explained from the side, beaming with joy at the success of the performance.

"Fairy, do you want to make contact with that slime?" Caitlin asked the narcissus beside her, who gently shook her head.

"Then, how about we just forget about it?"

"Your Highness, why don't you give it a try? That slime can even teach pets to read. The Snow Maiden can already communicate with her master through text." Brian was unwilling to give up and still wanted to try.

"Really?" Caitlin's eyes widened as she looked at Brian. Her fairy rarely spoke, often sitting in the pool lost in thought. Caitlin had tried many things, but to no avail.

She was very envious when she saw the Snow Woman and the Fire Sprite laughing happily.

The biggest difference between humanoid pets and other pets is that the higher their level, the stronger their learning ability and the easier it is for them to comprehend certain special magic. However, they often become attached to their own kind, and if not handled properly after leaving, they are prone to dying.

Therefore, even those beast-hunting teams would not easily capture similar magical beasts, as a mishap could easily lead to the annihilation of the entire team.

Moreover, these types of pets often live in remote or dangerous places, making them quite difficult to find.

Seeing Brian nod, and considering her performance just now, Caitlin finally made up her mind.

After the performance, it was time for a dinner party. Each class had its own area, so they weren't crowded together with the important people.

"Aili, quickly get me some meatballs! Sister Huoyu, help me heat them up, they're getting a bit cold!" Someone nestled in the Snow Woman's arms, accepting her feeding.

"Yes, yes, this is what life is all about!"

"You little rascal!" Ellie ignored her pet and chatted with Daisy and Angela while eating. The little fire bear was too sleepy and had already been recalled.

"Ellie, my dad gave me several dark elemental crystal cores and asked me to give them to you!" Daisy said, taking out a bag and handing it to Ellie.

“Me too, me too!” Angela quickly added, “Daddy hopes you can teach your sister’s pets to read more!”

"Aren't you afraid that your child will be kidnapped by that guy?" Ellie muttered to herself, as she heard Luo Fan's urgent urging in her mind.

"Ellie, hurry up and put this away! This is the key to my level up, it's my hard-earned money from working so hard!"

“Okay!” Ellie finally spoke, taking the bags from them, and then a series of exclamations came from the side.

Princess Caitlin has arrived, accompanied by her pet.

"Hello, Ellie!" Caitlin greeted Ellie, who was still somewhat dazed.

Daisy tugged at her friend's sleeve, and only then did Ellie realize what was happening.

"Your Highness, hello!"

Luo Fan was sizing up the beautiful woman's figure; she was curvaceous and much better looking than Ai Li. She had a beautiful face, like a peach blossom, and deep, intelligent eyes; she seemed like a shrewd person. It was just a pity that her long legs were hidden.

“Ellie, why are you afraid of her? She definitely needs your help. You naive little girl, I didn’t even blink when I faced a dragon back then.”

"You're just scared out of your wits!" I couldn't help but retort, and Ellie's mood immediately lightened a lot.

"Can I hold your pet?" Caitlin continued.

"Your Highness, you mustn't!" Marquis Mair, who was following behind, quickly reminded him, "This slime's sap will corrode clothes!"

“Your Highness, no, no, he’s very obedient.” With that, Ellie picked up Luo Fan and showed him to him, then put him in Daisy’s arms.

"Hmm, I didn't expect Daisy to be so well-developed, almost as good as Ellie." Luo Fan didn't care, since there were beautiful girls all around him anyway.

"Ellie, can you guarantee that? If he suddenly spits out mucus, can you bear the consequences?" Marquis Mair continued aggressively, his tone full of imposing force.

“Marquis Mair, it’s not appropriate to bully a novice mage like this!” President Joseph spoke up from behind. “Your Highness, Principal Brian and I can guarantee that Ellie’s pet won’t suddenly vomit slime.”

Principal Brian realized what was happening and nodded.

"You!" Marquis Mair stepped aside. What had happened before had been very embarrassing for him, but he hadn't expected that these two would speak up for her again.
