Chapter 10 Not Giving an inch

Su got out of bed and changed into clean clothes. She had a lot of clothes, most of which were prepared for her by her mother before she went to the countryside.

However, Su Nianyou managed to coax a few of the outfits into wearing them. Luckily, she's thin, so many of the clothes didn't fit her, otherwise she probably would have been naked.

“My mom wrote that she sent me a lot of fabric. I’ll make you two new outfits later.” Su Ti noticed that Wei Baichuan’s undershirt was all stained with yarn.

The clothes were so patched up that you could hardly tell they were original. She planned to go and buy him two new clothes to change into.

She had a lot of fabric in her storage space, and she took some out first under her mother's name.

She's not good at any manual labor, but she's quite good at handicrafts. She's loved doing delicate work since she was little, such as knitting sweaters, making shoes, and making clothes.

"No need, I have clothes to wear. Honey, let's not ask Mom and Dad to send things anymore. I'll find a way to buy you new clothes and good food. I can support the family."

Wei Baichuan knew his wife was good to him, but he didn't want to rely on her family for everything.

“We’ve just started our own family and no one is helping us out yet. We’ll ask our parents for help for now, and when things get better, we’ll repay them a hundredfold or a thousandfold.”

Suti never thought Wei Baichuan was unambitious. In his previous life, someone like Wei Baidao was successful. Wei Baichuan was much more ambitious than him.

She's still here. Once the reform and opening up happen, no matter what they do, their future won't be bad.

"Okay, I'll listen to you." Wei Baichuan thought for a moment. Not only did he dote on his wife, but his mother-in-law's family probably spoiled her as well.

Otherwise, why would someone who goes to the countryside send money and supplies every month? They're not here to work; they're here to have fun.

His wife was too naive before and was deceived by her cousin. He needs to keep a close eye on her from now on.

"Oh, the new bride is up. You can't find anything like this in the whole brigade. The bride is sleeping in the house while the mother-in-law is busy outside. Only people in the city do things like this, right?"

Huang Cuifen started speaking sarcastically to Su Ti as soon as she saw her; her husband had been talking to her about it all night.

She was told to be more considerate of others in the future, but she had a lot of grievances and nowhere to vent them. What family is like this, where the mother-in-law dotes on her daughter-in-law?

When she got married, she had to serve her parents-in-law foot bath every night and wait until they told her to go to sleep before she dared to go back to her room.

After years of being a daughter-in-law, she finally became a mother-in-law, thinking she could enjoy a couple of days of happiness. But unexpectedly, she had to take care of her daughter-in-law again.

"Mother-in-law, are you talking about me? I thought you were talking about my cousin. She's being unreasonable, she still won't get out of bed, even on her wedding night!"

"You should just do whatever your mother-in-law says. That's how landlords used to do things. Daughters-in-law had no human rights. They were treated like animals."

Suti was even more sarcastic than her, and this "landlord" startled Huang Cuifen.

"Second brother's wife, what nonsense are you talking about? What landlord or not? And you, as the sister-in-law, are still the elder sister even at your own family home. How can you be so insensible?"

Huang Cuifen wanted to tear that little bitch's mouth apart, but she held back, remembering her man's words.

What landlords? Can you just say things like that so casually?

Does she think she doesn't want to go and call her son? What if she goes and disturbs her youngest son's sleep?

Bai Dao must have been exhausted last night; she's counting on him to give her a grandson.

"How am I being unreasonable? I'm very reasonable. At home, my mom always brings food to my bedside. When I got to my husband's family home, I got up very early on my wedding day."

"You're still not satisfied? No wonder people say glass isn't a wall, and a mother-in-law isn't a mother. And don't say that just because I'm older and she's younger, I have to give in to her."

"Why should I? It's our first time being treated like this. What reward am I supposed to get for giving in to her? And you, Mother-in-law, are so much older than me, but I haven't seen you give in to me!"

After saying that, Suti didn't even look at the person who was trembling with anger, and went to wash up with a towel, toothbrush and toothpaste.

She couldn't stand her, but couldn't argue with her, and didn't dare to lay a hand on her. She also had to figure out how to coax her. Wasn't that going to be really difficult for her?

"You...you...what are you looking at? Hurry up and bring the food to the front."

Huang Cuifen clutched her chest in anger. Seeing her eldest daughter-in-law watching without saying a word, she vented all her anger on her.

"What sins did I commit in my past life to marry such a daughter-in-law? You have no ability and your womb is useless."

"What use are you? I can only raise a chicken and it will lay an egg for me. What can you do? You're just a waste of food."

Huang Cuifen became even angrier when she thought about this; none of her three daughters-in-law were to her liking.

Suti handed Wei Baichuan a toothpaste and toothbrush; Wei Baichuan's toothbrush was in terrible condition.

"Change to a new one, and use a new towel too. From now on, we need to use separate towels for wiping our face." Suti threw the broken one away.

She pretended not to hear her mother-in-law turn around and start cursing at others.

"Okay, honey, the water temperature is just right. You can use it to wash your face later." Wei Baichuan now does whatever his wife says.

Anyway, his wife wouldn't agree anyway; she's right about everything she says.

After the two finished washing up, Su Nianyou and her husband in the front yard also got up. Su Nianyou looked at Su Ti while washing up, seemingly wanting to say something but holding back.

She used to look aggrieved, a tactic she often employed. Back then, she considered this cousin her only family and couldn't bear to see her suffer any injustice.

Now she wanted to touch anyone she saw, and Su Nianyou felt very uneasy because Su Ti didn't care about her at all.

All the families had arrived, and the family gathered around the table to eat.

“Now that you three brothers are all married, you can’t expect your father and me to do all the housework. In other families in the brigade, the work is shared among the different households after they get married.”
