Chapter 24 Family Background

A moment later, a person emerged from the shadows, his face covered just like Wei Baichuan's.

"Twenty catties, please." Wei Baichuan didn't waste any words. Here, you weren't allowed to choose; you had to take whatever was available.

Whether the food is good or not depends on luck. His wife gave him a lot of money before she came, enough for any kind of meat.

"Wait." The man turned around and held up one finger to the people behind him.

The two finished the handover shortly afterward, and Wei Baichuan gave the money and left.

Wei Baichuan carried the meat for a long distance before stopping.

He took the meat out of the basket and carefully separated it, finding some fat and some lean. Remembering his wife's cooking skills, he kept a piece of pork belly.

He didn't dare to keep it before, but now he has a legitimate reason, saying that it was bought with money and tickets from his mother-in-law's family.

The remaining meat was distributed directly to middlemen in town. Pork was expensive on the black market, selling for more than two yuan per kilogram.

He brought the meat for 50 cents and gave it to the middleman for 1.5 yuan per pound. This source of the meat was the key, compared to the others.

He doesn't care how much others earn; everyone relies on their own abilities.

He earned seventeen yuan from this trip, aside from the piece of meat he kept for himself.

Wei Baichuan didn't linger. He took the money and went into the mountains without saying a word.

He started doing this not long after he came here, and it's been about a year now.

Even though he only worked once every two weeks or so, he still made a lot of money. He hid all his money in the mountains because he didn't feel comfortable leaving his family there.

Once they reached the mountain, they dug out the money by following the markings, took the things the mountain dweller had given them, and hurried home.

He knew that someone was waiting for him at home, and he was no longer alone.

Suti didn't sleep well all night, and in her drowsy state, she felt someone pushing the door open.

"Baichuan?" Suti called out softly. Their house was in the back, and they had to go through the front yard to get in.

Aside from the Wei family, no bad person would go straight to the backyard.

"Honey, it's me." Wei Baichuan hadn't expected his wife to still be awake; he thought he had woken her up.

Once Suti confirmed that the person was a talent, he put the knife he was holding into his spatial storage and got out of bed.

"How was the journey?" Suti quickly welcomed the person in, lowering his voice considerably.

"It's alright, I was careful. I didn't even use a flashlight the whole way." Wei Baichuan took the basket off his back.

He washed his hands and feet with the remaining water in the house before coming over to hug the person.

"Honey, I plan to do a few more harvests before the autumn harvest starts. Once the harvest begins, I won't have time to go for at least a month."

Wei Baichuan thought about how tiring it was to work from dawn till dusk every day during the autumn harvest, and he simply couldn't find the time to participate.

"Don't be in such a hurry, there will be plenty of opportunities to make money in the future." Suti knew that because of her family, he was under pressure and wanted to earn more money to support his family.

But she didn't want him to be so tired, and to be taking such risks.

"Opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared. Even if there are opportunities in the future, you still need to have the resources. I need to save up more now so that I will have confidence in the future."

Wei Baichuan didn't understand what Su Ti meant; he thought she was referring to what good future prospects her family would have.

He figured that by then, having money would make things easier and prevent people from looking down on him.

Suti looked at the serious-looking man and couldn't understand why Wei Baidao, who was useless in his previous life, had become successful.

If Su Nianyou climbed to the top by stepping on her, then what about Wei Baidao? Whose influence did he rely on?

It's as if he's blessed by heaven; he'll encounter benefactors whenever he wants, and get everything he desires effortlessly.

But why is it that hard-working people can never compete with those who are lucky? There is too much injustice in this world.

"Baichuan, let's work together." Suti didn't believe in fate, let alone that Heaven wouldn't intervene this time.

She also wanted to eliminate Wei Baidao's influence and his mentors; he was unworthy of them.

"Okay, honey, this is what I earned this year, and now it's all yours."

Wei Baichuan found it particularly adorable to see his wife looking so earnest as she talked about working hard together.

Suti opened the box carelessly, thinking it would be another ten or eight yuan, but unexpectedly found a stack of ten-yuan notes.

She counted it carefully; it totaled over four hundred and fifty yuan.

"So many?" Suti was genuinely surprised.

"And the seventeen yuan today is all yours. I also brought back a piece of pork belly. I didn't dare to take it back before, but I'll keep a little bit every time from now on."

"Just say it was bought with money and tickets sent by my parents. Anyway, I only get the money every two weeks, so it's plausible."

Wei Baichuan handed over the seventeen yuan from his pocket, not intending to keep any, and felt extremely satisfied when he saw his wife's bright eyes.

He will earn more money for her in the future, and as long as she doesn't look down on him, it will all be hers.

"My man is amazing, what is this box?" Suti leaned in and kissed him.

Then, curiously, I looked at a slightly larger wooden box next to me. How much money could it hold if it were this big?

“This was given to me by the mountain villager I rescued. He didn’t have much to give me. These things were hidden in the mountains by some wealthy landlord from before.”

"They're not anything valuable, just some women's jewelry. It's not safe to keep them now, so I was planning to throw them away."

"I was thinking that you might like these, but we can only wear them secretly and can't take them out."

As Wei Baichuan spoke, he opened the large box.

The box was filled with jade and gemstones, just as Wei Baichuan had said, all of which were women's jewelry.

But Suti knew these things would be very valuable in the future. She had seen many auctions in later years. She didn't understand these things, but she knew that the greener and more translucent the better.

She held these jade bracelets, a long string of beads, and various thumb rings, filling a large wooden box.

"You like it?" Wei Baichuan was even more excited than when he saw the money when he saw his wife's excited expression.

I should have asked for more. But there's probably still some up in the mountains. Those landlords used to hide those things there.

Gold bars and silver coins are desirable, but even if someone finds them, they consider them unlucky and dare not touch them. He will look for them again next time he goes up the mountain.

“I like them. These are all good things. Think about it, those landlords were able to hide these things in the mountains back then, which means they were valuable.”

"Even if they're worthless now due to the special circumstances, I don't think it will always be like this. They'll definitely have value in the future, so if you come across them in the future, don't throw them away."

Suti couldn't talk about the future, or people would think she'd lost her mind. She could only try to remind Wei Baichuan from a different angle.

"Then I'll bring it back next time I see it, but you have to hide it well, honey."

Wei Baichuan felt that his wife made sense. His wife was from the city and must have seen more than him. It was just that these things were not something that could be shown to others now.

When he was a child, he also witnessed the crackdown on landlords' families, with beatings, smashing, and frequent criticism sessions.

Thinking of those landlords, he remembered something.
