Chapter 54 We Don't Recognize You

They were his benefactors, and he pretended not to know about their past. He had originally planned to bring his wife to visit them.

After these things happened at home, Wei Baichuan felt guilty for using them to threaten Wei Changgen.

He knew that over the years, Wei Changgen had taken advantage of the brigade's connections to obtain grain seeds and poultry, which gave them a place to live and settle down.

He didn't intend to inform on them, but that didn't stop him from using it to threaten Wei Changgen.

He should have thought of this earlier. How could someone as selfish as Wei Changgen take such a big risk for a relative's family?

"Do my grandma and the others know?" Wei Baichuan didn't know how to face them for a moment.

“They don’t know that we were trapped here and couldn’t see anyone. After Changgen was born, we found out that the Wei family had no children, so we sent him there.”

Wei's mother never expected that her first meeting with her grandson would be like this. She knew that the grandmother he was talking about was not her, and she looked very upset.

"How dare you talk to your grandmother like that?" Wei Changgen couldn't stand his mother's attitude at all.

"Mom, don't be sad. Your son will take you to live with us soon. You still have two grandsons at home. They will definitely take good care of you."

Wei Changgen couldn't bear to see his parents suffer any injustice. If his parents hadn't sent him away back then, he might be living here hiding like his two older brothers.

He can't be like this now, married and having children, unlike his two older brothers who remained bachelors their whole lives.

When Wei Baichuan saw Wei Changgen like this, he thought of what his grandmother had said before she passed away. She must have discovered something back then, right?

He grew up with his grandmother and the others, and he remembered that Wei Changgen always had a haughty and superior attitude whenever he came.

He showed no gratitude whatsoever towards his grandmother, even displaying disdain for her. Yet, he was a dutiful son to his so-called mothers and relatives.

"Are you sure my grandma and the others don't know? She just didn't say anything. And since you're so selfless, why did you send the person away and then rush to bring them back?"

Wei Baichuan was very clear-headed; he felt that their plan was quite clever.

“What’s wrong with me acknowledging my own son? Changgen, if this white-eyed wolf is my grandson, then I won’t acknowledge him.”

I don't know if they were angry or embarrassed, but the people who were just kind and gentle a moment ago were now looking at us angrily, and there was no trace of friendliness left.

"Mom, don't be angry. That beast has no conscience. He ruined my job because of his new wife."

"I came here today to tell you this: I won't be able to come here often anymore, and I won't be able to bring seeds anymore."

“Don’t sell the grain you’ve harvested. You should eat it sparingly from now on. I’ll take some back with me this time, as we haven’t had enough food at home lately.”

Besides the things Wei Baichuan said that made him nervous, the most important reason Wei Changgen came this time was that he wanted food.

In the past, they couldn't appear in front of others. They would secretly go to the mountains at night to hunt and then exchange the hunted animals for food to barely survive.

Later, when he became the brigade leader, he took advantage of his position to bring over some grain seeds, as well as poultry, which he also bought under the guise of the brigade.

Now, the number of chickens and ducks that each household can raise is limited, and the authorities frequently come to check. No matter where you buy them, you have to register.

Over the years, he has managed to raise a dozen or so chickens, ducks and geese here. He had also thought about raising pigs, but the piglets were managed too strictly.

Those people in the brigade valued him more than their own lives. They hadn't found an opportunity to make a move all these years, but now he had lost his job, and all of this was gone too.

"What? You've been removed from your position? What are we going to do now?" The group of people couldn't care less about anything else and looked at Wei Changgen with great anxiety.

Wei Changgen was furious when this was mentioned, and he recounted what had happened in his family recently.

"You're asking for it! Why don't you just die? If I had known you would do this, you shouldn't have saved him back then. Saving him only made you an enemy."

"We didn't expect you to repay us. We never thought you were such a traitor, betraying your parents with your outsider wife. Are you even human?"

Mother Wei was filled with hatred for Wei Baichuan. Their family was already in such dire straits, and they had only managed to have a few good years thanks to their youngest son.

Now that she has nothing left, how can she not hate?

"Ha, my wife is right. Some people are inherently bad. If I'm not mistaken, the grain you grow here is deducted from the brigade's accounts, right?"

"And these poultry, you obtained them by abusing your position, didn't you? How can you take public property so casually? If I have no conscience, then what kind of good people are you?"

Wei Baichuan made no attempt to refute Wei Changgen's ambiguous statements. He remained silent about Wei Changgen's scheming and assault, instead focusing on how heartless they were.

He looked at these people, and their hearts were just as ugly; they would pretend not to hear him even if he spoke.

"You...you..." Mother Wei was immediately enraged and trembled with anger.

She has lived a comfortable life these past few years, and she knows what kind of lives people in the villages outside live.

They looked down on her back then, but now who lives as comfortably as she does? She has no worries about food and drink, and she can even buy new clothes after selling her surplus grain.

She had long forgotten about the past in recent years, but she never expected that her own grandson would point at her and say that she was bad at heart.

What did he mean by those words? Was he mocking her past?

She did nothing wrong, she pursued true love, and she was wrong to resist her parents' decision to marry someone she didn't love.

"Get out of here! We don't recognize you. And if you have any conscience at all, just pretend we never met." Wei's mother glared at Wei Baichuan with bloodshot eyes as if she wanted to tear him apart.

Wei Baichuan glanced at the group of people and remained silent for a moment.

"Don't worry, I mean what I say. As long as you don't cause me any trouble in the future, I won't report you, and I'll pretend I didn't know anything about what you did. Consider it repaying the debt of saving my life."

Wei Baichuan gave the group a deep look, then turned and left.

After Wei Baichuan left, the group followed him to the cave entrance and, seeing that he had swum away, blocked the entrance.

"Son, why did you do this? You just told him about our relationship like that?" Wei's mother turned around and looked at Wei Changgen anxiously after the others left.

Wei Changgen had already told him about the family matters, and he had guessed that Wei Baichuan would come in the next couple of days; he had said it on purpose.

“He’s not stupid. He’ll figure out our relationship sooner or later. Let’s use this life-saving favor to force him to make a promise.”

"I know his personality after so many years of getting along with him. He's very stubborn, and if he promises something, he'll do it."

"He still wants to use you to threaten me. I'll see if he dares to threaten me again when the facts are laid out before him."

Wei Changgen felt relieved thinking about how Wei Baichuan had acted earlier; if we're going to lose face, we should all lose face together.
