“I didn’t sell any of the meat from last night; let’s keep it all.” Wei Baichuan returned quickly after going out last night.
He knew that meat and fish were more expensive on the black market around the time of the autumn harvest, but he didn't need them.
The mountain wives won't let us go anymore, so there won't be any more wild game. We can't afford to lose any more meat.
“Okay, we’ll keep them all.” Suti glanced at the meat on the cutting board; she had plenty of meat in her storage space.
These look a bit fatty, let's save them to render lard, she wants to eat lard noodles.
"Put this meat away, wife. There's no one to watch the house while we're not home," Wei Baichuan said, still worried.
Unlike other families, their family doesn't have elderly people or children staying at home to look after things.
"Okay." Thinking of this, Suti went back inside and put away all the valuables, knowing that one should always be wary of others.
Anyway, it has space, so it's just a portable backpack. You can take it anywhere without getting tired, and no one can see it. It's really a great thing.
"Su Ti, you haven't left yet?" Guo Lili and Wu Xiulan were always inseparable.
They thought they had overslept, but when they passed by Suti's house and heard some noises inside, they were relieved to see that they hadn't left yet.
"Let's go now." Su Ti opened the door, wondering whether Wei Baichuan would come with her or go find his good brothers.
Just as I was about to ask him, I saw him push out the cart as well.
"Why did you bring this?" Suti asked, noticing that the dirty cart that had been brought over when the family divided its assets had been cleaned up. She hadn't planned to buy much.
“You sit down. The commune is far from here, and your feet will hurt if you walk there.” Wei Baichuan thought of the times when she went to the commune and he secretly followed behind her.
Seeing that she was walking with support, complaining about how tired she was, he was anxious and wished he could go up and carry her.
He didn't have a formal title before, but now he can openly and legitimately spoil his wife.
"..."
Guo Lili and Su Ti were dumbfounded. He had spent the whole night cleaning the cart just for her to ride on.
"No need, I've been there before, it's nothing." Seeing the looks in Guo Lili's and Su Ti's eyes, Su Ti felt unusually embarrassed.
She knew he loved her, but this love was excessive; she couldn't even bear to imagine what it would be like to see him pushing his cart down the street.
“That’s different. Listen to me, my wife. Your feet will hurt. If it’s really not okay, we’ll bring a blanket. You can cover yourself with it and sleep until we get to the commune.”
Wei Baichuan thought it was a great idea. Remembering that his wife hadn't had enough sleep that morning, he rushed in to find a quilt and spread it out.
Su couldn't stop him no matter what she did. Looking at Wei Baichuan's expectant eyes, she really couldn't bear to refuse.
"How about I don't go? Can you bring my things back for me?" Wei Baichuan felt sorry for her, and she felt sorry for Wei Baichuan too.
She felt sorry for him having to push her around the whole way, and that he had to work so hard on his rare day off.
"No, I'm worried about leaving you home alone. I've been busy all night. Why don't you come upstairs and sit down for a bit?"
Wei Baichuan definitely couldn't leave his wife home alone. If something happened to her, how would he survive?
"Well, Suti, we'll be going now." Guo Lili and Suti felt they had eaten too much that morning and were feeling bloated.
"Wife, let's go too." Wei Baichuan closed the door and turned to look at Su Ti.
Suti glanced at the cart, then quickly climbed up and covered himself with the blanket.
"Tell me if you're tired." Su Ti thought that they could only sit for a short while, and Wei Baichuan couldn't stay like this for the whole journey.
"I won't get tired. I used to deliver mission pigs to the commune, and those were much heavier than you." Wei Baichuan laughed. He wasn't tired at all; he was full of energy pushing his wife.
Su Ti paused. Comparing her to a pig? She's never even been compared to a pig? What's with Wei Baichuan's beaming face?
"Wei Lao Er, what happened to Su Zhiqing? Is she injured again?" Most of the team members had already left; those who remained were people who had finished arranging things at home and had left late.
When they saw Wei Lao Er pushing the cart, everyone was stunned. Had Su Zhiqing gotten hurt again? Was it because Jin Jianguo beat him up yesterday?
"No, my wife needed to pick up some packages, and we were thinking of bringing a cart to haul things." Wei Baichuan paused for a moment. His wife's face was covered; how did everyone find out so quickly?
After saying that, he pushed the cart away, leaving the group of people looking at each other in bewilderment.
If Suti knew what he was thinking, she would definitely laugh out loud. Even a fool would know that she was the one who pushed him.
Wei Baichuan walked very fast and soon caught up with many people ahead. Su Ti didn't care anymore, since no one could see her face since she was covered up anyway.
She got off halfway and walked with Wei Baichuan, and after a long time of coaxing and pleading that she wanted to walk with him, she finally managed to appease him.
"Should we go directly to the post office to pick up the package, or go shopping first?" Wei Baichuan asked, noticing that they were almost at the commune and there were many strangers around.
I also saw the figure wearing a red armband, and consciously kept my distance from the person.
Everyone in the brigade knows them well, but outsiders don't know about their relationship. Even the couple has to avoid suspicion when they're out in public.
Otherwise, being targeted by the police would not be a good thing.
"Let's go check out the supply and marketing cooperative first." Suti wondered why there were so many people wearing red armbands today. Had something happened?
“Okay.” Wei Baichuan pushed the cart and led the people directly to the supply and marketing cooperative.
Not only did Suti and his group avoid confrontations, but passersby also kept their distance from those wearing red armbands.
"You stay outside and watch the cart. I'll go in and check on it myself, and I'll be right back." Suti looked at the large cart; she couldn't very well push it inside.
She wanted to buy some paper towels and a lunchbox because everyone would be busy harvesting during the autumn harvest and wouldn't be able to come home for lunch.
