interrogation
As we were chatting, my phone vibrated again.
This time, it was Wen Xubai's turn.
As soon as the call connected, Wen Xubai's face darkened instantly.
Zhang Xiu is dead.
"What's wrong?" Qi Zui noticed the change in Wen Xubai's expression and asked with concern.
Wen Xubai did not answer, but lowered his head slightly, concealing the cold glint that flashed in his eyes.
The next second, familiar red and blue lights appeared in the distance, standing out brightly in the dim streetlights.
The two of them simultaneously raised their hands to block out the blinding blue light.
The sirens blared deafeningly.
When they lowered their hands again, the two were already surrounded by police cars.
"What's going on?" Qi Zui was dumbfounded.
Wen Xubai had already realized what was going on, and his heart sank to the bottom.
The lead officer got out of the car, flashed his police badge, and said sternly, "Officers, please cooperate with the inspection! Which of you is...?"
"I am."
Before the other person could finish speaking, Wen Xubai had already answered.
"Huh? What? Are you... Officer...?" Qi Zui was completely dumbfounded, looking at the huge scene in front of him, utterly confused.
Just as I was about to ask if there was some misunderstanding, I looked up and saw that Wen Xubai was already handcuffed and getting into the car with the police.
"No, hey! Officer, what's going on? Have you arrested the wrong person?"
Qi instinctively wanted to chase after him, but was stopped by the other police officers beside him. He could only watch helplessly as Wen Xubai was led to the car. He panicked and shouted:
"Officer, officer! There must be some misunderstanding, officer!"
Before getting into the car, Wen Xubai couldn't help but stop and glance at Qi Zui behind him out of the corner of his eye. When he turned back, his eyes met those of the policeman who was escorting him.
"I will cooperate with the inspection, please don't make things difficult for him."
Wen Xubai's eyes held an unreadable meaning.
The lead officer seemed somewhat surprised, raised an eyebrow, and nodded to him in a "please" gesture.
"Of course, Young Master Bai."
Wen Xubai pretended not to hear the slightly mocking address and calmly lowered his head to get into the car.
Just before starting the car, he took one last look at Qi Zui, who was still trying his best to explain.
————————————————
Do you recognize this person?
A policeman with a thick beard held up a photo of a middle-aged woman in front of Wen Xubai.
"I know him." Wen Xubai glanced up slightly.
It was Zhang Xiu.
"What's your relationship?"
"She used to be a maid in the Wen family."
"I'm asking you what your relationship is!" the bearded officer suddenly shoved the photo in front of him.
Wen Xubai just looked at him coldly, his thin lips moved slightly, and he said, word by word, "I said, it's a master-servant relationship."
"That's all?"
That's all.
"Oh."
Instead of getting angry, the bearded police officer laughed, abruptly pulled up his vest, and sat back down in his seat.
The large, rough hand twirled the photo, staring at him with amusement, and said, "Wen Xubai, Third Young Master Wen! You must be a regular at our police station, right?"
Seeing that Wen Xubai ignored him, he continued to recount his story to himself:
"Eighteen years ago, there was the Wen family car accident; ten years ago, the intentional injury case; three years ago, Miss Wen's accidental death... and now you're involved in this case again!"
The man said meaningfully, "Wen Xubai... I originally thought you were a pitiful person."
Wen Xubai lowered his head, barely suppressing the urge to sneer. Upon hearing this, he indifferently raised his head and looked at the other person, saying:
"Is that so? Whether I'm pitiful or not... don't you have your own judgment?"
The young man's eyes gradually overlapped with the eyes of the child in his memory, whose face was covered in dust and scars and filled with panic... Feng Li was speechless for a moment, unable to say anything more.
After a long pause, Feng Licai clasped his hands back and asked again, "Zhang Xiu is dead, did you know?"
Wen Xubai said coldly, "I just found out."
"You just found out?"
"How did she die?" Wen Xubai asked calmly.
"You don't know how she died?"
"I have no idea."
Are you sure you don't know?
"I have no idea."
Feng Li suddenly turned the computer on the table around, making sure Wen Xubai could see the screen.
It was a surveillance video from the cemetery, and the people in the video were Zhang Xiu and Wen Xubai.
However, the surveillance video is very short, only five minutes long.
"You saw her three days ago, didn't you?"
"Yes," Wen Xubai readily admitted.
What did you talk about at the time?
"We didn't talk about much, just casual conversation."
"Then why did you go to the cemetery?"
"To pay homage to my mother."
"Your mother?" Feng Li suddenly sneered.
Slam!
"Do you remember who your mother is?!"
"How long has it been since you last visited your biological parents? Do you even remember?! They risked their lives for you, and what have you been doing?!"
"Captain Feng, Captain Feng, calm down, calm down!"
Upon seeing this, the police officer who was taking notes nearby quickly stopped the agitated Feng Li.
Wen Xubai chuckled softly.
"What are you laughing at?" Feng Li roared.
Wen Xubai seemed puzzled: "Now that I am surnamed 'Wen', and I have entered the Wen family, I am naturally a member of the Wen family. What's wrong with me going to pay respects to my nominal mother?"
"you!"
Feng Li felt like his lungs were about to explode with anger, and he pointed at Wen Xubai, speechless for a long time.
Wen Xubai, however, seemed completely unconcerned, casually shifting his gaze away from Wen Xubai's and glancing inadvertently at the surveillance camera in the corner.
His clenched fists revealed his inner unease.
His back was already soaked with cold sweat, but Wen Xubai's face remained expressionless as he coldly watched Feng Li gradually calm down.
After a long while, a young policeman suddenly squeezed in, glanced at the two men, pretended not to notice the tense atmosphere, and whispered to Feng Li, "Captain Feng, it's been almost 24 hours..."
Feng Li seemed to calm down a bit then, and said in a deep voice, "I understand."
He then looked at Wen Xubai again.
"Carbon fumes poisoning."
Wen Xubai was stunned for a moment, then realized that Feng Li was replying to his previous question.
suicide.
Two words instantly jumped into Wen Xubai's mind.
Feng Li clearly saw what he was thinking, and with a cold laugh, interrupted his thoughts:
"Do you think it's possible for someone in their fifties to travel over a thousand kilometers from Beijing to Wuhan to commit suicide?"
What exactly did you say to Zhang Xiu on the day you met?
Wen Xubai remained silent for a moment before replying:
"As I said, it was just a casual chat."
"What everyday talk? Recite it to me word for word, without omitting a single punctuation mark!"
Feng Li glared at Wen Xubai with a hint of warning in his eyes, then looked at the recorder beside him, signaling him to prepare to take notes.
Wen Xubai thought for a moment, then slowly began to speak.
His voice was cold and indifferent, without the slightest emotional fluctuation, as if he were talking about something completely unrelated to himself.
The story was a mix of truth and falsehood, which concealed the fact that Zhang Xiu had given him the USB drive.
As Feng Li stared at the text scrolling across the computer screen, a vein throbbed on his forehead.
The veteran detective's intuition told him that Wen Xubai was definitely hiding something.
But he had no evidence. Feng Li felt a surge of anger, and the veins on his forehead throbbed, as if he was about to explode again.
But in the end, Feng Li suppressed his urge to get angry and said in a harsh voice, "Wen Xubai, you are the last person Zhang Xiu saw before he died, and you are a major suspect in the crime!"
"If you can't clearly explain the whole story of what happened that day, do you know how serious the consequences will be?!"
"Do you have any evidence?" Wen Xubai retorted.
"It will be available soon."
The warning message is self-evident.
Feng Li stared at him with sharp eyes, his expression carrying an imposing aura cultivated through years of trials and tribulations. Any other criminal would likely have been thrown into a panic.
But Wen Xubai kept his head down and remained silent for a long time before slowly repeating:
"I know nothing."
With a loud "bang!", Feng Li slammed the door shut and stormed out!
Wen Xubai closed his eyes weakly.
Wen Xubai finally breathed a sigh of relief after hearing that the others in the interrogation room had also packed up and left.
The stiff body still couldn't relax.
Because he knew that it was not over yet.
The clock on the wall ticked slowly. Wen Xubai had never felt time could drag on so slowly...
Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, and Wen Xubai bit his lip tightly. The taste of blood gradually spread on his tongue, and Wen Xubai tried hard to distract himself...
The events of the past few days flashed through his mind like a revolving lantern...
Zhang Xiu, Ruan Qing, the video, and that child...
Feng Li was right. A woman nearing fifty years old would abandon her recently buried husband and her child who had just graduated, and travel thousands of miles to a foreign country to commit suicide... Anyone who heard this would find it utterly absurd.
But if it was murder...
Wen Xubai's eyes sharpened.
If it really was a homicide, then that video has very likely already fallen into the hands of someone else...
Wen Xubai recalled Zhang Xiu's previous request to him:
"I want to ask you... to find that child first... and send him away."
"Don't let him fall into those people's hands, don't let him suffer in misery too."
Who are those people?
Just as he was deep in thought, the door to the interrogation room was suddenly opened.
Wen Xubai glanced over instinctively and saw a young policeman standing in the doorway, gesturing to him with his chin and saying expressionlessly:
"Wen Xubai, you can leave now."
Wen Xubai's tense body suddenly relaxed, the feeling of suffocation slowly subsided, and his breathing finally became smooth.
The next second, as if he had thought of something, Wen Xubai frowned again.
While the other person was helping him remove his handcuffs, he glanced at the clock on the wall.
The hour and minute hands are not yet fully aligned...
This means that... it hasn't been 24 hours yet.
