Chapter 144 The Missing Lover

In fact, Count Lanruer had met this aunt at a banquet long before the incident occurred.

At that time, Nora was newly married and still immersed in the joy of marrying her lover. Her every smile and frown revealed the spoiled and innocent nature unique to young girls.

Count Lanruer can still recall Nora's bright and beautiful smile at the banquet.

So when he was only ten years old, he was almost the first to rush out of his room when he heard that his aunt had come home to stay for a long time.

To Count Lanruer’s utter surprise, he was greeted not by the beautiful young girl from years past, but by a disheveled, filthy, and insane woman!

This meeting dealt a heavy blow to Count Lanruel, who was full of expectations, and he even fell ill for more than a month as a result.

When Count Lanruer finally composed himself and prepared to visit his aunt again, he was met with the news that Nora had been locked in her room.

Since then, apart from the maid who brought Nora her meals and Lector who visited her occasionally, no one in the family has seen Nora again.

Even when Lector died and Nora married Count Ranruel, she didn't leave her room.

The strangest thing is that Lector, who committed suicide, repeatedly instructed his son in his suicide note that he must never meet with this aunt.

"So...you really haven't seen her again?"

Ji Qian found this a bit unbelievable, after all, in her opinion, Earl Lanruer didn't seem like the kind of obedient child.

Perhaps Ji Qian's disbelief was too obvious, for Count Lanruer felt deeply offended:

“Those were my father’s last words. Our Brook family has always respected the deceased!”

Due to his heightened emotions, Count Lanruer unconsciously raised his voice while speaking.

Ji Qian was startled by his sudden increase in volume and subconsciously turned her head to look in the direction of 'Wang Yingying'.

At this point, Wang Yingying had already half her body inside the pyramid and had no time to care about the movements of others.

Seeing this, Ji Qian breathed a sigh of relief, then turned to Earl Lanruer and whispered a warning:

"Keep your voice down! Your aunt is no pushover. Aren't you afraid she'll stab you?"

Earl Lanruer looked surprised upon hearing this, clearly not understanding why Ji Qian would say such a thing:

"I am the last direct heir of the Brook family. How could she, as a family member, possibly harm me?"

Ji Qian stared speechlessly at Earl Lanruer's confident demeanor, and after a long while, she finally managed to utter a retort:

"As an heir who died young and left no descendants, directly causing the extinction of your family, where do you get the confidence to say such a thing?"

Seeing Earl Lanruer's expression freeze instantly, Ji Qian didn't forget to add insult to injury:

“If she really cared about the family, she should have killed you, this unfilial descendant, immediately.”

After hearing these words, Count Lanruer remained silent for a long time, and finally realized with despair that what Ji Qian said was actually right!

Devastated, Earl Lanru turned away and silently retreated into seclusion.

At this moment, 'Wang Yingying' finally emerged from the pyramid.

Her eyes were red as if she had just been crying, but the expression on her face was one of relief and ease, and even her attitude towards Ji Qian was much better than before:

"I will release your companion after we get out. You can ask me anything now."

Ji Qian didn't stand on ceremony with her and pointed to the fallen pyramid, asking:

"Excuse me, is this your husband, Ms. Nora?"

'Wang Yingying' or Nora clearly didn't expect Ji Qian to be so direct, and choked for a moment before answering:

"……Yes."

"Would it be convenient for you to tell me what happened?"

Nora paused for a moment upon hearing this, a thousand possible answers flashing through her mind, but in the end, she chose to tell the truth:

"I don't actually know anything about this."

After saying that, she seemed to realize that her answer wasn't very convincing, so she quickly added:

“His friend invited him to the hunting grounds to discuss business, but I had just found out I was pregnant, so I didn’t go with him. Little did I know that it would be the last time we saw each other.”

Recalling those days, Nora still couldn't help but tremble slightly:

"When the news came back, I was so shocked that I fainted. When I woke up, I was told that I had miscarried."

Logically, I should have stayed home to rest, but because I was really worried about Charlie, I rushed to the hunting ground where the incident happened as soon as possible.

According to Charlie's friends, they saw a deer in the forest, and Charlie was the first to ride up on his horse, followed closely by the others.

But after turning a small mound, Charlie and the deer disappeared without a trace.

The remaining people searched the forest for a long time but found nothing, and finally had no choice but to notify their families.

Nora sighed at this point, seemingly somewhat helpless:

"I was young and impetuous at the time, and I was determined to find Charlie, so I decided to stay at the hunting grounds."

At first, it was fine, but later, perhaps due to excessive psychological pressure, I started having nightmares night after night.

In my dreams, Charlie often looks at me covered in blood and asks me why I left him alone and why I didn't go to save him.

From then on, my mental state deteriorated day by day. By the time I came to my senses, I had already accidentally stabbed the maid who came to wake me up to death.

Recalling the scene, Nora's hands trembled slightly; she still cannot accept the fact that she killed someone.

Seeing that things were not going well, Ji Qian raised her hand and slapped Nora on the back. Nora staggered from the slap, and her previous excitement vanished instantly.
